my sheltie has the sleeker coat, they are born that way, she gets fuller as winter comes on but never full like the puffy shelties, but she could be a sleek coated show sheltie, had I have bought a show dog. I have to spell car, treats, and if we accidentally curse she assumes we are argueing and shelties are very peace loving dogs, and don't want their owners to fight or argue, she gets nervous and stays by my side at any sign of conflict. from any person including my husband. she protects me
Not bad. I have two shelties. I love them more than life itself. I will say that teaching them is very easy comparted to other dogs b/c they have an overwhelming need to please their owners. I shouldn't be hard to teach them without the treat so readily available to them...keep working at it...you'll be surprised what they can pick up.
I noticed that she doesn't have as much of a puffy coat as the show dogs. Why is this? I really like them without the big huge puffy coat, so I was wondering if I got my own sheltie, how I would keep it like that.
i think its the shampoo and how they brush them, i dont really know cuz my shelties are naturally puffy around the neck, but they were bought as 500$ show dogs (i dont really know the exact price) but my shelties are also a lil over weight, i guess theres two different kinds? the show dogs and the normal?
We have one puffy one and one that is not. It depends on their parents. The shampoo and the climate are irrelevant. If the parents are puffy, guess what the pup will be? =)
@sniborlrak We had two dogs out of the same litter once, one that had smoother coat (a sable tri-factor girl) and a tri-color male with a GIGANTIC coarser coat. Still fighting those rough collie genes, all these years later! Your little girl is clearly enjoying herself!
in my opinion i think aprils coat is perfect. because some have to much and i think its hrd to handle. btw april is abeautiful dog. im getting a female sheltie in a couple of months the litter of the breeders dog are born. i hope she looks like april.
@sniborlrak We have one puffy one and one that is not. It depends on their parents. The shampoo and the climate are irrelevant. If the parents are puffy, guess what the pup will be? =) it will be short haried
@empouse you would brush it ALOT. Also some shelties are just born with puffy coats, and some without. it also depends what time of year it is. if it is in the summer then they probably have a thinner coat because they shed alot. In winter, the opposite. they grow lots of fur to keep warm. i kno this because of my own experience with shelties. they are very loyal and kind-hearted dogs. <3
We have to spell so many words around our house -- even in casual conversation, if we mention anything related to our sheltie, Sarah, we find she is always tuned in and listening, and usually five steps ahead of the game. I think she's as smart as the kids were when they were toddlers! (and mmuch more obedient...)
That's funny. We have to do the same thing with certain words such as "mailbox". We've also had to clean up our language as April does not like ANY profanity.
Oh yes, and sooo sensitive. Like if I find the kids have spilled something or left a mess in the kitchen, and I call out "Who did this?" -- poor Sarah always acts guilty and hides behind the big chair, ready to take the blame. She is the most human dog I have ever had -- having had collie/shep mixes, another sheltie (male) when I was a kid, and now Sarah's "brother" -- Paul the Pug. Paul just copies whatever Sarah does 'cause he knows she's "with the program."
Eventually our Sheltie figured out how to spell. We had to make up another word for car ride or c.a.r.r.i.d.e., and it even figured that out over time.
They are so amazing. We've counted about 50 words in our spoken vocabulary that she responds to (even when not directed to her). We might be casually discussing what we want for dinner and she'll come running from five rooms away because she picked up the word "dinner"..
You're right, they're very smart dogs. There are certain things that get them very excited such as going to the mailbox so we've had to start spelling some words but i wouldn't be surprised if she starts picking up on that too!
@ClueSign We've spelled for so long that our 2 Shelties immediately suspect something is up whenever we spell anything. We've had to come up with new ways of subterfuge, such as "the big dog" or "the little dog", but they've both come to know the word "dog", so we went to "Mister L" and "Mister J" and now they suspect anything with "mister" in it. They're smart dogs :-)
The picture on your channel page is too small to see but it looks like they are beautiful shelties. You should upload a video of them so we could see them.
You know what? I taught my litle sheltie high five! I'm not joking. It is easy to teach them. Just teach them like shake but don't grab their paws. It really works!
Yes, I get that a lot too. A lot of people are not familiar with shelties and think they're miniature collies. But when you think about it, being compared to Lassie is not such a bad thing. It's better than being compared to Cujo!
Shelties are the best dogs in the world, period. There isn't another dog with the intelligence (x5), loyalty (x10), love (x5), dependibility, and hardiness of the venerable Shetland Sheepdog.
I just answered your comment for the puppy versus stuffed sheltie. this is the other sheltie I mentioned that doesn't shed nearly as much as the other one. Are you currently a sheltie owner or interested in getting one?
My family and I are considering buying a dog that doesn't shed much this summer. We find that sheltie's would be great, but our mother is very paranoied about dog hair everywhere in the house! Do you know if the dog leaves a buch of hair everywhere it goes, example on the sofa?
Hi, canadiangirl. I've had shelties and golden retreivers. The golden, as lovely as he was, was a nightmare for shedding. The shelties shed in clumps, which are much easier to clean up after. If you give them a good grooming at least once a week, then the hair should be a non-issue. I had two at a time in the house, and the grooming not only kept the dog hair down, but it is a bonding ritual, which the dogs looked forward to. Hope that helps.
Wow! That is awesome! She reminds me of my sheltie --almost has the same markings and is petite too. Shelties are very intelligent dogs! They learn commands very quicky--I am still trying to teach my Sheltie to give me her paw, but she can't get the hang of it yet.
That was not amazing
