i think you need to try 3 parts ammonium nitrate and 5 parts magnesium.. by volume.. not weight.. mine goes pop not woosh.. i only tried woosh effect few times.. and that sucked!

i was not using a scale, just going by eye. But now i think that the so called AN i was using was actually another type of fertilizer known as urea, they both look the same. The wierd thing is that if you mix this fertilizer with water until it dissolves the water will turn cold, this is what is making me really confused at the moment. But thank u for that info, i wil have to remember about using a scale for when i actually get AN. i would love to get kno3 more!

i dont know what is going on with my AN/MG flash powder. i've got the AN powder and i've got the MG finely filed, but when they mix and i light it nothing happens, only the AN smoulders then forms little balls and the MG will sparkle abit. i have also tried lot of different radios but they dont work. Please tell me what is going wrong.

Do you weigh your MG/AN?

If so, how accurate is your scale?

Also, your AN might be wet, so I recomend you put it in the oven at around 100 C or so, make sure not to exceed 169 C as that is the melting point for AN.

Leave it in for about half an hr or so.

Please don't call ammonium nitrate "AN"; NH4NO3 is the proper formula. I hate it when kids who consider themselves pyrotechnics (as opposed to pyromaniacs) believe they know everything. Now I hope I'm not coming across as a stuck-up chemistry wizard (because I'm not), but at least have a basic understanding of chemistry and use the proper terms.

Thanks...but, whats wrong with abbreivating Ammonium Nitrate to "AN". I never said I'm a serious pyrotechnic...I do this as a hobby. Once again I still don't see anything wrong with abbreviating Ammonium Nitrate and I also have a general understanding of what I'm doing. I never said nor indicated that I know everything, and you will probably find that my knowledge is quite small compared to true "pyrotechnics". no prob...u notice the difference when its confined if its not fine enough youll be wasting your time if your making salutes. i use 3 micron Al in flake form the faster your powder burns the better the report, the human eye cant really see the diff until u confine them...in my opinion

Hmm...well then i guess ill use sandpapered mg i use 150 grit lol (way to fine) ill go down to 120 some say 60 is good but i think 120 grit will by fine
