J.D. and Anthony are so in sync it feels like 1977 and a studio jam...except Anthony has a bigger vocal range and J.D. was in his peak...R.I.P. J.D. Sumner
Yep, J.D. could sing the lower "A" on a piano. I played trombone on tour with The Stamps in 1979. While J.D. was singing Way Down the stage monitors began to vibrate so violently that they eventually "walked" and subsequently fell off the front of the stage, smoking I might add. It was the most hilarious thing I ever saw. The man lead a rough life. I woke up at 6am on our tour bus one morning somewhere in the middle of Nevada and saw him pour Old Granddad whiskey in a beer... for breakfast!
I don`t like tim storms. JD was able to hit extreme low notes without vocal fry.......Tim has no chance to compete with JD`s voice. But once I heard a man talk, with a very very low and strong resonant voice. That guy maybe would be a competition for JD....if he would be a bass singer. But he`s just a teacher who comes every jear to our shool with exchange students from Italy..for a few days.....but that guy`s got a voice.....
We have to remember that JD was unique as their wasn't anyone even close to being in his league for bass singing in his time. Had Tim been around back then, it would have been fun to watch, but I think JD would have whooped him. JD will always be the plateau for all bass singers to reach.
As far as bass singing is concerned, one thing to remember..in JD's hey day he didn't have anyone even in his league for bass singing to compete against. We can all probably agree that Tim is the lowest alive today. But had Tim been around in JD's time, I would not have bet against JD. Though I think it would have been enjoyable to watch those two go at it, JD would have whooped him.
I love J.D. Sumner! He still is the lowest bass singer in the world no matter what anyone says! I love how when he goes for the double low C you can hear that lady go "Oh My God" Haha! J.D. Was and still is a beast!!!

JD lip sync the last part. It was his voice but it was recorded earlier. JD just wanted to get it right.

I think he nailed the C1 even better here than in the studio version. After all, it's a note that is out of reach to the average bass singer!
