2:23 - This bass solo is fucking trippy! Tom Jenkinson is the only human that can make me imagine other places just with a bass solo. For me, he's like John Frusciante, he doesn't play for techniques, he plays every note with emotion.
Also, the main melody likely was played life, and a lot of the mixing can be done life also with tools like glitch and a groovebox. just cause the instrument is now in the form of a box and a screen doesn't make it any less of an instrument.
Western freeform is an oxymoron because you still limit yourself into chord structures and specific scales of frequency. How can it possibly be freeform if can only make a finite amount of sounds?
we are not stuck on our boards. no straps motherfucker. its pretty goddam free lol, mix that with a bit of style. freestyle can be anything you make up as u go along, skating, bmx, snowboard, rap.
your comment is so stupid i think ur just taking the piss
Not all western artists use chords and stuff like that. The new age is starting to use tech to compose their music (such as i am.). So don't be so quick to say we have limitations to our music.
you are totally right. the only interpretation where it could not be a contradiction is if "western" is meant to be a geographical reference for the origin of the artist or the piece, but not "western" in a musical way.
oh and another thing, an artist has infinite possibilities inside finite options, always. It doesn´t matter if it is a finite amount of sounds, you can still be free with it, and do something new, just the same way a painter can make infinite things with a finite space in the canvas, do I explain myself right? See you!
"it should not be labeled as jazz because it is not a display of freeform expression based around an improvisatory framework, using melodic and harmonic traditional elements that are idiomatic to jazz. That's the short answer :)" - by jazzpsalti
That's not a SHORT answer, that's a SHIT answer which doesn't actually mean anything.
You need to revise your definitions of Jazz, Mate.
he's right in that it is not classical jazz; it is, however, a wonderful fusion of classic techno with modern jazz much in the way industrial fuses rock and techno.
I first heard of Squarepusher when I bought Ken Ishii's X-mix album back in the day. I immediatelly fell in love with the song and the rest is history. I'm going to watch Squarepusher live at STRP in The Netherlands, April 4th.
jazzpsalti, that's YOUR definition of Jazz. As a jazz musician myself, the term "jazz" itself to me comprises a wide variety of styles, not all of which are necessarily based off improvisation, and definitely not all are freeform.
well yeah but who said this is electronic music anyway? its just because it uses electronic instruments....i havnt studied music enough to learn about different styles of music but i think this has characteristics of jazz so why shouldnt it get labelled as jazz?!
I think it is because of the presence of electronics that it would be classified as such. The jazz chord progs are basically his little spin and touch, but it makes it what it is. Pretty sick though I love this song
yeah i know what your saying. electronic music kind of relies a lot on the sound, i dont know of any set rules or boundries for it which is good but very loose label. music appreciation is mad

I had forgotten how awesome this track really is. You wouldn't believe how many times I've searched for this on YouTube. I loved this when this came on on Chill Out Zone in the good ole days of 1997. Pure sonic joy.
Same here! Luckily I had it on a VHS tape to remind me once in a while - and now, with Youtube, I can finally dig up all those groups again (and occasionally buy a CD to sponsor them) 8-)
