R.I.P. Mr. Preston. You are brilliant. People, if you love Billy, please watch "I was made to love her" It was one of his last live performances before he passed, and I think it was one of the best live performances of all time. Miss ya Billy.
In all do respect to the above comments it is not fair to compare anyone to the great Sam Cooke. Simply said the man was in a class all by himself. Most singers who do remakes do so out of love and respect for the original artist and not for the purpose of "one upping them". Furthermore, though it is okay to compare let us also keep in mind that these artists are usu paying tribute to someone they admire. This is esp true of Al Grn,Rod Stwd and Preston all of whom deeply admired Sam.
I've been told I'm as white as they come. Having disclosed that important piece of information I gotta say no one can do this one with the feeling Sam Cooke did. He didn't try to make it more than his voice conveying his words. Even the overdone post production w/ the orchestral backing didn't take that away. Bottom line, when he recorded his vocals, that's all he cared about; it shows in the sound and that's what makes it truly soulful to me.
When I think of artists doing a remake of songs such as these I think it should compliment them; such as David Ruffin doing a brook Benton song ( Rainy Night In Georgia ) Some songs shouldn't be touched unless you can enhance it. A typical disaster would be Rod Stewart doing " We're Having A Party " by Sam Cooke; I like Rod, but he should have left that one alone. I must say the same for Billy Preston. It is clear that this song is too much for him vocally, and he just couldn't do it justice.
Nice phrasing of lyrics - he makes it mean something. I'm listening to many, many artists version of this Cooke classic, but it really takes something that not all of them have to sing this with conviction and panache. Billy gets the job done! Thanks for the post.
STFU ABOUT THE MAN'S MISTAKES AND ENJOY THE MUSIC IF U DIDNT PERSONALLY KNOW THE MAN IT DOES NOT EFFECT YOU IN ANYWAY P.S. THIS IS A WONDERFUL VERSION R.I.P BILLY
@MrBEB123 yes, unlike famous Whites such as Lindsay Lohan, Hugh Grant, Nick Nolte, Paris Hilton, Mel Gibson, Ryan O’Neal ,Vince Neal of Motley Crew, Chace Crawford, Lief Garrett, Jaime Pressly or Charlie Sheen to name a few. In the words of Charles F. Kettering "You can be sincere and still be stupid."
Easy to see that the lyrics on this song really means something to him and to everybody who suffers. There's almost nothing nowadays compared to great songs like this one.
billy preston is the 7th tastierist of all the times and the great pianist, finder and first manager since 1961 of the beatleeeeesssss. You watch i´ve got a feeling in the rooftop concert of the beatles and it is there. he play in let it be, i me mine, i´ve got a feeling, get back, i want you, something, my sweet lord... he´s died the the 5th june 2006 in Scottsdale
RIP Billy Preston! Great Gospel arrangement for this classic and very different from the string laden original Sam Cooke recorded of the song he wrote. I like both versions very much.
i wish all musicians would recognize who they cover/sample. even if for no other reason than to educate the world in how much the originals influenced them and should be respected
I happened across this guy's music today while watching the very first episode of Saturday Night Live...and I became an instant fan! I recognized right away that there was something special about him. I hate that it took me so long to discover this.
we all do wonder hearing live singers voice all from sudden because our generation has the worst music for centuries we should all agree to not worshippin superstars and popstars the world is full of good singers with great voice
