I actually like this version, possibly more than the version which appears on Soul Mining. This is the single version, you can hear it with much better vocals on '45 RPM'. It has a certain charm which the later version with Jools' on piano, lacks (In my opinion).
matt got had of there , the tapes (music in background) is a bout 40 decibals lower the teh mic setting, sound guy shoulda been sacked . matt stll came through tho eh (hehe)
i do not comprehend how that audience couldnt even move a muscle! and to such a timeless classic.matt must have loathed every minute of that performance
How funny and cute. Well hair never suited Matt. He sings better than expected, though it is badly mixed and the crowd looks like they're waiting for a bus. An anti pop star. Which is a compliment.
@m7lists "Pornography Of Despair" was another album that was shelved. Tracks have appeared on obscure cassette releases and b-sides etc. Dumb As Death's Head - or something like that... - is the best track Matt Johnson ever recorded, but impossible to find. It was released on a flexi-disc with a magazine. Used to have it taped from the radio.
@geowebforum I have some MP3's taken from 2 different tapes of Pornography of Despair. I have lower quality for most tracks, slightly improved versions of some other tracks, I can't recall which were higher quality but I know 'Dumb as Death's Head' was one of the higher quality recordings. I'd be happy to share them with you, get in touch if you're keen.
@liamMaru Hello, I am most keen to get my hands on the demos of HOD and also the Jools video clip. I have some early Birthday Party and Joy Division stuff, some I think are different to the H&Soul stuff. All on tape though.
@fleaby Gotta get those tapes digitised :). HOD I'm not familiar with, although I'm terrible with acronyms. Never liked the Birthday party, although I have been conditioned to hate Nick Cave.
The English eating their own. The producers may have been pissed at "some kid" with everything on tape, except some strumming and singing. So they make the vocals sound as bad as they can. The vocals are not so bad, for zero effects. Consdier the music is heavily produced, echo, reverb, etc. Then a dry voice.
@m7lists It was a problem with the BBC in those days. They seemed to have a problem with sound, especially vocals. Compare any performance to a similar one from Channel 4's the Tube and there's no comparison, hence a lot of artists preferring Channel 4 to BBC, even up to this date even.
@m7lists Many songwriters dont have a great voice. I love the Clash, and neither Joe Strummer neither Mick Jones sing well. But they did some of the best songs ever. Matt is just another great example. Efxs are for that - allowing songriters to record their songs, and be available to us. That is art.
(efxs were not for */r* bands (boys and girls-bands , gangsta shit, etc. )
wow sorry to say but it's really awful. amazing, the soul mining version i used to listen to religiously. who produced that album--did a good job? matt johnson must also play keyboard? he did the amazing solo?
Matt Johnson was doing every sound on this record, except for a few solos, mst obviously the piano solo on the final version of this song, which was done by Jools Holland.
He's the greatest ,the only one who make a cd just when he 's satisfy with it.I would use for him the words that matt put in a cd for hank williams so:"a body of work that most artists would be proud to to accomplish in a lifetime. Who else can be if not matt johnson ,someone who has travelled in so many many directions with such a taste and a freshness.
lol :-) i never used to know but now i think that i don't know.... ok, joke over, lol , it's a tie between soul mining and dusk for no. 1 spot- both perfect albums i play still very often.
Love Matt's singing and composure on this. Total confidence in his song..and rightfully so.

I haven't thought of the title for ages, discarded in favor of "Soul Mining", let alone appreciated it.
"Pornography Of Despair" - brilliant, incisive indeed.

The vocals do seem weak, but it really wouldnt sound bad at all if the EQ had a little more mid to low range boosted and a slight bit of echo.

Don't think those kids knew they were in the presence of a real genius. Peter Powell probably did tho.
Matt looks a bit Thom Yorke-ish circa 1993 here, lol.
Obviously the song got stronger once he nailed it proper on Soul Mining.
