@tekel8 Not necessarily. Most dogs only live 10 to 15 years. Old people can live longer than that.

I think these videos of the elderley getting puppies are very sweet, however im slightly concerned as to whether the are getting help from the family in caring for them, as do all these elderley people have enough energy to look after and give these puppies the masses of attention they need as they are very tiring

@rednewt Puppies are great therapy for elderly people. My grandparents have two and they have much more time to spend with the puppies than with younger owners because they are retired. :) Lucy and Ellie really livened up my grandpa. Even when my grandma said that one of the dogs could live with my baby sister next door to them, my grandpa said "No. That's MY dog." Then she suggested the other one and he said "No. That's my dog, too!" Lol. :)

@MissB2TheLynn I wasnt generalising to all elderly people, and I know they have more time to spend with a puppy, but what I was getting at was energy. My grandmother of 79years was looking after a Jack Russell puppy for a week and she was truly worn out by the end of the week by the masses of attention and demand of energy required by that puppy, and my grandmother is a pretty fit 79 year old.

I hope this is a puppy you are willing to take if God forbid your folks pass on before the dog. I don't understand why people give "puppies" to the older folks. Puppies often live longer (like 15 years), then have broken hearts cause the folks have passed or end up in rest homes. The dog ends up in the pound, or death row. Very traumatic for the puppy that could of had a home for life. And people quite giving little kids puppies. They hurt them, cause they don't know how not to yet.

@kindsirisme Thank you. I think it would have been great to give them a dog, It boost their psyche, thus health. But with some older age to the dog (house dogs often live to be 10-15 years old), and yet a lap dog, so they will be close. older dogs don't need as much exercise, or grooming. There already house broke, trained with the basics, but not past learning new things, and they crave attention. Just saying... When thinking about the owner, you need to think about the animal too.

If they're sensible people they'll have talked about the fact that they're willing to look after it if anything happens. I do think giving little kids dogs as presents is weird though - fair enough get a dog, but it should be a family dog.

@bmontaguerave I hope their not stupid, but you can't "assume" anything. That wouldn't be stupid regardless, but "ignorant." Stupid can't be taught better. My comments were not necessarily addressed to this couple, though I hope the givers did think that situation over first, but I was addressing all the other people that think this is a great idea and may not have thought about this very problem. I have seen this happen with people I have known, and it is sad for the pet left behind.
