Rowan Tree etc. ought not be thought of as "easy grade four stuff," rather, as traditional pipe music, full-stop. How a competition committee decides to rank difficulty isn't really relevant at all to a musical performance. Besides, these marches are rarely played anything like this well, even by many pipers and bands that regard themselves as decent musicians.
Cheers for giving the Argyll's an A Grade as a Band in Germany back in the early 92 Gavin. A pleasure having a chat at the Pipe band Ball later that evening. Yes i was a Drummer lol. nice sound.
It's a wee leaky skelpy thing, but in this man's hans, it's a forester's hewing precision at a rock's ugly mien and the shining of beauty where all thought nought but shards of pain flew. Aye the pipes like none but their ain' so come on girls and boys, let's up to the nest - to hear tales from'st the eagles breath.
HEHE Gavin is my neighbour :) He lives just up the road from me. He usually plays the pipes at new year or he did anyway. He gave me a picture of him and other pipers leading the stone of destiny across the border of Scotland and England the army were there and everythin
Old Rustic Bridge (by the Mill) is an old traditional song that has been fitted to the pipes along the way. Back in the day was a Music Hall favourite, and you can find it on wads of old folk albums. Someone, somewhere must have arranged it for the pipes sometime, but I don't have a clue who or when.
@ScotPipingSocLondon-not too sure who put it on the pipes originally but I am pretty sure that Rustic Bridge the song was written by a fella called Keenan & is about a very specific place in County Cork near where he was from but quite a few folk mistakenly associate the tune with Monaghan due to one particular gobshite from there who popularised an awful version of what is a nice tune.
I kind of like hearing the greats play standard tunes that we all play, it adds to that "piper's community" feeling, if we all were to meet up at some point, we would all have tunes we could play together, (although some might play better than others, lol!)
@MrHoohoodragon Ofcourse he does (sound great playing easy stuff). But no it isn‘t. Really all matters, if that’s all what your capable of playing is?
@MrHoohoodragon Have you got nothing else better to do than pick arguments with people that made comments over 2 years ago?! That's sad. You need help.
@weepiobair Now you're resorting to insulting me? I wasn't talking about you in my last comment if that's what you're so shook up by. I was talking about a hypothetical piper.
@MrHoohoodragon Oh grow up for pity's sake! Instead of picking fights why don't you spend more time on the practice chanter, as you can't play full pipes yet? Who knows, one day you might know what a grace note is.
@weepiobair I've been on full pipes for 3 years. I just haven't posted any videos on my channel. Can we please just stop this stupid argument? This is really going nowhere, and I think we can both agree that the basic tunes sound just as good as the hard tunes if you play both with proper style and tone.
NVM, they're W. Sinclairs.

Really surprising to see and hear Mr. Stoddart to play easy Grade 4 stuff, but 'The Rowan Tree' is a personal favourite. Thanks for posting.

@weepiobair Well I would argue that if this is all that you're capable of playing, you probably don't sound too great.

@MrHoohoodragon Wow, 3 years! And with all drones going? That’s fantastic!
Remember, you’re the one that started all this.
Moral of the story; don’t mess with someone who’s been playing over 10 times longer than you. Hard tunes, tone and style my arse.
You know sweet Fanny Adams.
