After watching the movie Amadeus a month ago I decided I would like to learn how to play the violin. I have used your videos as a supplement to my lessons and I would like to express my appreciation for what you do. Most people would charge a lot of money for what you do.
thanks for the info on the elbow placement. i have always wondered abou the elbow placement swinging out to the left, but you clarified that with no more than the elbow straight down on the e string.
Your clear explainations and demonstrations are very helpful. Thank you for sharing your experience. I took public school string classes back in the 70s and now both of my children are taking private lessons. You are a very valuable resource, for my own resumption of playing as well as helping my children with their practice.
also, just recalled from the video I took while taking lesson. My teacher told me to imagine dimensions. there are 7 dimensions of string: E/A/D/G/EA/AD/DG. The trick is to let my elbow memorize the dimension and keep pushing/pulling in that dimension. Easy to say, hard to do though.
I really appreciate this video. I sometimes heard the scratching sound because my elbow is not enough outward. does your left shoulder tired out fast if you really bring your elbow out like that? Do you think it is normal that my left shoulder got tired 5 minutes into practice on G string. Thanks.
I think getting tired is to be expected with anything like this that is still new. Do not over-practice, but build up your practice sessions. There is a risk of injury if you do too much, too soon.

Yes, very hard!

Also, make sure you are just swinging the elbow and not squeezing either the fingers/thumb or the shoulder/head.
