I also remember during my ornithology coursework during undergrad that momma birds eat their young's waste as a means of replenishing all the nutrients they lost during the incubation of their young. It would make sense for a dog to do the same thing, eat the membranes and other products of birth to not let those nutrients go to waste, they have to clean up the pups anyway right? Why not a snack at the same time?
