  • I have absolutely loved Kenny since about the time he began making music and this is a favorite. Looking forward to the time when he gets inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Hopefully soon!

  • Just love Kenny's voice! A hell of a writer too!

  • If you are a LOGGINS FAN... CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO!!!

    Robert Bartko Danny's Song

  • Great Video...

  • Great song Kenny, Thank You. The real thing brings tears to my eyes, What a great song. I seen you play at Seven Springs resort in PA.You are a great musician, Im going to listen to Conviction of the heart from the Red Woods next.Thank you Kenny Bill Johnstown, Pa.

  • it's so FABULOUS.. i really ♥ this one and i ♥ Kenny Loggins as well..

  • Even though this is a beautiful sounding song , the truth is still that he had an affair with his therapist, both left their marriages and he left his kids to be with each person, who very ironically left him years later. When you cheat on your spouse you also cheat on your kids. The most honest part of this song is when he sings, " and for me". I like his music, don't care for the man

  • @RickyTan37

Love the man as an artist!! As far as a husband... not so much!! But I must say, if the inspiration for this song came out of it, it wasn't all bad!

  • Kenny explained that he had sat down to write a song for his wife. A love song. But somehow, this is what came out. He says it was unexpected. Bet it was. I love this song!

  • The "Real Thing"? Song should go like this, "I did it for me and myself and because love should never involve sacrifice." Your kids were the REAL thing. Hell with him.

    Sorry goin through some stuff.

  • Makes me cry.....it really touches the heart, this melody, the words, what he expresses how he feels....every one who has been through a situation like this surely feels the same, he only has the capacity to express it in such a beautiful way...this is a beautiful way to tell your kids, why...so much love in this song, it hurts in the heart...profound....thank you!

  • "And because I still believe,

    There's only one thing,

That you can never give up,

    Never compromise on,

And that's the real thing you need in love."

Kenny said (sang) it perfect, and I believe. :)))

He is just amazing. I heard of the tracks back in 91 on the radio, and I went right down to record store and bought the cassette. I didn't get out of my car until I heard the whole cassette. ty for posting the concert in the woods

  • Written by my good friend Jeff Kenworthy. Great man of God.

  • @jackallworm I went through the same situation some years ago. I cried every single time I listened to this song. My daughter is 17 now, she lives with me, we sit together and watch this video, I do not cry anymore, feel sad though........it is just a matter of time my friend, you will see...CM

  • Its 1:23am and Im having one of them moments....thinking back to 20yrs ago when I joined the Navy, got married, stationed in Japan and a baby on the way. Now, 20yrs later it seems I cant get my life back on track due to my divorce in 05. My dau/son dont even speak to me. They resent me for moving away from them. This song kills me. My son was my best friend from the day he was born and now 14 years later we dont even know each other. Every relationship I try to get in has failed. I miss my kids.

  • @jackallworm Jack, don´t worry, all you need its a little time to "channel" with them.....our childrens would never go far from us...its us who needs to reconnect them...I'll assure that they'll be there waiting....just do it my friend!!!!!!! specially in this season!!!!!...My best wishes for you and your loved ones!..

  • @jackallworm I just wanted to tell you to never give up..TRY-- I know it i easy for someone else to say..but..He NEEDS YOU AS MUCH AS you NEED HIM..Keep trying...and when the time is right I believe that GOD will bring it to pass..There is always...always....always a second chance..CHIN up...and GO FOR IT!

  • @jackallworm Don't let this song hurt you, let it inspire you to give all you have, to determine you never to give up. Children always want to find a way to be close with their parents if they are not already, it may take time and perseverance; give them a way back and they will come.

  • @jackallworm Hang in there dude, I can relate and I empathize. Please stay strong and try and remember ( it helps me... ) the Navy flag from the 19th Century and used currently since / post 9-11:

    "Don't Tread on Me."

This is my interpretation of this great album. Take care and God Bless - MTM

  • @jackallworm

Come on, my friend! Do not give up. Keep on trying! Tell your kids they are part of your life and that you will always love them, no matter what may happen. And tell them that, anyway, you are their only dad, there will never be another one, and may them learn to forgive, cause we, fathers, are not perfect at all, but we will always be there for them and never will stop loving them. Come on my friend, and forgive my poor english.

  • @jackallworm after all that's happened, the best thing you can do for your kids, and yourself, is to be the best person you can ever be. Don't judge, don't hate, and help others, and help yourself. Have peace and love in your heart, I went thru one myself, and it just feels like everything i did was just wrong, nothing i do was right or didn't hurt anyone. Until I met my soulmate

    There's only one thing,

    You can never give up,

    Never compromise on,

And that's the real thing you need in love.

  • @jackallworm speaking from a kids point of view, if a parent comes back into our live with a new positive and productive attitude with actions to back it up we will respond in a loving way. I will pray for you. I hope all goes well. God Bless you :D

  • @jackallworm I hear you... this is a hard song for me, too.

  • I met Kenny back stage 15 years ago and when I told him that this song had given me the strength to find the real thing and change my life, he told me that many others had shared the same sentiment with him. My little "Amanda" is named Danielle and she was 7 at the time. Today at 23 years and a beautiful young woman, she thanks me every day and knows, that I did it for her..and her brother Chris, and not just me. Thanks Kenny 16 years later, for the wisdom in your song!

  • Kenny's has so many great songs! Gosh!!!

  • Probably sound like I belong on a reality show but I cannot listen to this song without crying, it hasn't happened once. I'm certain I'll continue to seek it out from time to time. True story.

  • simply...awesome..

  • This song warms my heart and soothes my soul :)

  • my mom presented me this song when my parents got divorced and said it would would all be alright so in a way kenny helped me get through my parents divorce i listen to this song when i feel down or aggrivated

  • This song is so heartbreakingly honest. I am going through a divorce right now and part of me is hurting so badly but the other part of me is relieved because as these lyrics say "there's only one thing you can never compromise on & that's the real thing you need in love". My hubby is an OTR truck driver & he's gone for 3 to 6 weeks at a time & the only thing I need is to share my life with someone who wants to be with me rather than at a truckstop every night & my hubby needs to be on the road

  • @mnewland1234

This song was my strength over 16 years ago, and you will find your path and strength too! My babies were little then and grown now and I still know, when I listen to this song, that I did the right thing! And when my adult children make better choices in life than I did, they will know too. Hang in there. It does get better!

  • I have always loved this song and Kenny Loggins but you know who else could wail this tune - Steve Perry.

  • I have to say that this song is just so personal..and so HONEST.. I remember the first time i heard it on the radio... I cried my eyes out... And I say "HONEST" because it isn't just a "I DID IT FOR YOU" ANYBODY CAN SAY THAT.. BUt He admits that he did it for himself... I really think this is one of his best songs...I will always love this because I think that everytime he sings it it probably breaks his heart a little...even though it is now all in the past...

  • kenny, great job, thank you.

  • this song has me made cry so many times.. reminds me of being a kid of parents who got divorced and then when i separated from my ex-husband two years ago. i love my kids so much!

  • I so agree with you SmoothJazzMood...this song has so many memories mixed with it for me

  • Never really realized what the song's about, but it's a greast song even after 15+ yrs.

  • I remember hearing this song for the first time over 15 years ago, and was amazed then as I still am today how clearly it illustrates the agony of deciding to divorce with small children involved.

So sad to hear that Kenny Loggins is going through it all again.

  • This is a very painful song to listen to. My wife and I just divorced, the kids have taken it very tough. I understand exactly how he feels.

  • Smile

  • I'm trying to smile but the pain is so severe.

  • This is just a great song...nice song to listen to while driving

  • the real thing...

  • This is a song about ending a toxic relationship and the children not understanding how he wanted to show them the real thing, hence " I did it for you and the boys because love should teach you joy and not the imitation that your mommy and daddy tried to show you" We teach our children what is acceptable in life and if we show them we accept nothing in our relationship they will too follow.

  • If you read more about what Kenny Loggins has written and said you will understand that HE was the toxic in his relationship with his wife. He has multilpe affairs and was unhappy in his relationship with her so he cheated. Finally, it ended and he left. Saying you are doing it for the kids and how you were not showing them what a loving relationship is true, however, he did not take responsibility for how much of that was him.

  • Yeh, if I am not mistaken I think I remember reading or hearing somewhere that he wrote it for his daughter.

  • "....I did it for you, and the boys, cause love should teach you joy, not the imitation that your momma and daddy tried to show you. I did it for you, and for me, because I still believe there's only one thing you can never give up, never compromise on, that's the real thing you need in love". So, you tell a kid that you did it for them. How does a kid not take that as their fault?

  • yeh, I worded that badly, what I should have said is that I think he wanted to explain that he wasn't doing it to hurt them but that staying together isn't always the best thing for anyone, and that she should never settle for less than the real thing, love that brings you joy and happiness. When a person is unhappy it effects everyone around them.Honestly tho, I don't care about what the man has done or not in his private life. I just love his music.

  • @kmrs1959 I read about that later after hearing this song too.

  • I have always loved Kenny, and have jokingly said that he has walked around in my brain and wrote songs about what I was going through. This song in particular. I wrote the words of this song and gave it to my daughter when her Dad and I got a divorce. I love this man and I love this song.

  • This is not a sad song..it is something more parents need to do when they split..."the boat upon the ocean..not everyone is sailing out to sea...I am ready to believe."

The power of love...teach your children well

    Awesome song!

  • So beautiful

  • One of the saddest and most powerful, gut wrenching songs by Kenny....can't listen without crying!

  • Same here. Especially at the end of the second verse, when he says, "But your daddy doesn't live here anymore". That must be really hard for a young child to comprehend. She knows Daddy doesn't live here anymore, but she doesn't understand why.

  • i'm getting reverb off the southern rim

  • Amazing song. This entire DVD is incredible. Buy it.

  • This song realy hits you deep. Such a great song about the turn a love can take.

  • wow. kenny loggings has to be one of my favorit singers of all time...

  • Everybody's Got A Boat Upon The Ocean, But Not Everybody's Sailin' Out To Sea....No Imitations !!!

  • i have two favorite songs and this is one of them!

  • great song... I printed out the lyrics during my divorce from my children's father and will show them when they are grown.

  • one of my favorites song of all times

  • I love this song. Finally listened enough to figure out what the song was about.

  • calm down oh great one. You're right, it is a case-by-case basis. I'm wasn't writing a thesis on gender-based equality in destroying relationships, just venting emotions. This song speaks to emotions. Of course, any woman would have understood that...

  • i am sorry for being a jerk i really am a good guy.

  • OMG. Every woman on Youtube: read what my friend here wrote....There really are good ones out there....and no need to apologize....in fact.....Let's hook up....JUST KIDDING....LOL...Sorry for that couldn't resist....:)

  • anytime you need to talk just ask.

some of us can listen pretty good.

i am sure your a cool person.

and this song is pretty awsome i can do this everyday.

  • I imagined that since you were listening to this song, things weren't perfect in your life either...thanks for making me smile to start my day...tell me how this song relates to your life...

  • keep smiling i am sure your an awsome person .

  • you know there are many woman just as bad a guy loses a little something special and a woman looks for someone a little hotter or with a little more money or whatever you woman look for so don't go hammering all guys it's a case by case situation sometimes the guy sometimes the woman cause you got a bad apple don't bash us all.

  • Sometimes I think I can't live with my husband another day, that it kills my soul a little everyday, but what would it do to my little girls if we split up? How does anyone make this decision? Do men ever get it how much they hurt us? The mother of their children, why is it so easy for them to cut us down? A kind word, a compliment, so impossible for them. The sarcasm, the impatience comes so effortlessly. Why?

  • Oh thats right it is on "Leap Of Faith" too. Great CD

  • You can't pick it up 5 bucks. Its an Anthology

and a double album. Not cheap.

  • This is a hard one for Kenny to sing... emotionally any way. I met Kenny 2 years ago. He is incredibly honest and genuine. He is a real sweetheart! He and I kind of hit is off I think because I'm a very honest person too. Excuse my lack of modesty. Kenny is so wonderful, open and generous with himself.

His playfulness is lengendary. He a great guy to hang out with. ;)

  • this song hes my name in it.

    its the first word.

this a really pretty song. :]

  • Kenny's an awesome writer.

  • Brilliant lyrics.....this should be a staple for kids of divorce.

  • Thanks for posting. Yes, indeed. I tear up every time I hear this; it came out at the time I had to sit on a bed one night and tell my two girls (12, 10) that their mother and I had run the course and were splitting. Worst thing I've ever had to do in my life. These lyrics provided some comfort, at least.

  • This song was written by Kenny about his daughter and the impact his divorce had on her...I think it is so eloquently written and one the best written songs of all time. Makes me wanna cry.

  • Actually, he was writing a song for his daughter's christening and this is what came instead...way before he got divorced. The info came from the liner notes of the album.

  • This is my favorite video, I play it everyday in the car.

  • I'm a big fan of Loggins',but this song(along with "Meet Me Halfway")has never really done it for me.Don't get me wrong,he's a consummate pop genius, but those songs just sorta lie there and...

  • If someone has it, please post the version they used to play on the radio. Thanks!

  • re: If someone has it, please post the version they used to play on the radio. Thanks!

the whole CD is actually listenable,,,,,,,,you could probably pick it up for 5 bucks s + H inc off ebay or amazon

  • The whole album isn't just listenable, it's incredible. Leap of Faith is probably that last album that Kenny released that had that quality to it.

  • Such A Awsome Song. I Wish, and it should, Have Had More Airplay!!!

  • once again... your colections are so great.

  • Most beautiful song KL ever recorded. Thank you so much for posting! :)

  • This song make me cry. I love Kenny.

  • @hydrophonik I have always Loved this Beautiful Song, get the chance to hear it every great once in a while, and never knew Who he wrote it for..Thankyou.. I needed that.... and the good cry that went along with it. Can't wait to call my daughter Angelique.

  • @hydrophonik I agree. This special is how I fell in love with this song. It is one of those true love songs!

  • @hydrophonik Very profound it is....could help a lot of divorced parents to explain in a loving way to their children...it's absolutely beautiful and profound....

  • Loggins is great.

  • This is my favorite Loggins song. He's good. Love it.
