if its low FPS then why do they not even appear to move as the rear blade does? EVEN IF it was low FPS the blades would still appear to spin slowly and may look as tho somewhat stationary, but these DO NOT move even when slowed, your explanation of the FPS rate being the issue - is FLAWED!

A good camera would not create this illusion. This is what happens with cheap digital recorders. Have you seen the iPhone video of airplane propellers, taken through the passenger window, where the blades appear to be segments of sausage disconnected from the engine? That didn't actually happen either. If there is another version of this helicopter fly-by that was taken with good analog equipment, onto video tape, and it still looks like this video, then I'll consider believing it.

Again with the anti-gravity nonsense. It's called optical synchronization. The rotor speed and frame speed of the camera are such that the rotor is filmed in relatively the same place in it's rotation. Making it appear to stand still. You can CLEARLY hear the rotors turning in the audio. Like the wheels of a moving car appear stationary when record at certain speeds. The tail rotor rotation is clearly visible because it is turning much faster than the main rotor. Anti-gravity, go back to school.

the camera cannot capture the rotation of the blades because it cannot open and shut the shutter at the same rate of speed as the blades are rotating; check out the old blk & white movies and look at the wagon wheels ,..they appear to rotate, 'backwards'! geez! young people are dumb!...I weep for the future!

to start with a helicopters top roters are really quite week and if the helicopter was moving as fast as in this video the blades would be flopping so hard they would be torn off!! they are only strong when spun at a high speed!! second you can here the rotors beating the air in the video!!!!! nice try! cool effect tho! messing with the shutter speed on your camcorder!! its like watching TV threw a desk fan! every time a blade gos by you don't see anything. The rotor speed is in sinc with the shutter speed of the camera. Most probably found by accident.

Similar illusion happens with car wheels, but nowadays many cameras do not use shutters, so people are unfamiliar with the phenomenon.

OK.... I've worked for NASA and here's my opinion...

Have you ever put a strobe light close to a fan or motor.... the blades seem to appear still..... But they're not really.... Its an optical illusion..... The strobe frequency in this case must be from the video camera that took these shots.. In some of the shots, you can see the blades move slightly, thus indicating the blades are not exactly 100% sinked up with the strobe frequency.

As for an answer, it is an optical illusion, your eye registers images at 100 frames per second, the blades of the helicopter are spinning faster then 100 frames per second, which means that your brain interprets the spinning helicopter blades as stationary since it doesn't know what to make of it.

@demoniccollasp The tail rotor moves, the camera is synchronized to the speed of the main rotor. The tail rotor is to balance the torque of the main rotor. If the main rotor was not spinning, the tail rotor would be spinning the craft around. The proof is in front of you.

@RainbowManification i am with you on that fact... if the rotor is turning at 29 cycles per second and the video is filming at 29 frames per second.. you will see no movement of the blades. for instance look at a wheel as it spins faster, even to the eye it spins one way then as it gets faster apears to run in reverse etc..also i think the crowd would have been a bit more exited about the display. maybe area 51 has copters thar run as this seems:) but they wont use them at a half ass airshow

(The machine is kept aloft by appropriately powering the rotors, not anti-grav.)
