@ganthonyvr super old comment i know, but the plant releases one chemical to kill it in about 30 mins, then it takes roughly 10 days for digestion. it then opens back up, spits out the corpse and prepares for the next meal. on average the leaves eat about 4 or 5 times (in my experience) before they brown and are replaced
@DAILL2DEF gee thanx alot i was really wondering would happen to the fly. is that plant harmful to humans? are there any bigger ones? i saw this plants at walmart only once and never again, the cup where they had them was covered with a plastic top and there was lots of humidity in it looks like they come from either rain forests or from very humid enviroments i dont know i might be wrong. thanx man
@ganthonyvr yea the top is for the humidity. i threw it away long time ago & haven't looked back. main thing is as long as you provide it lots of sun, lots of water and a reasonably stable environment, they do well. mines ran $5.99 and the crickets from the pet store are plentiful at $.11. it's currently been working on a huge cricket for 2 days or so now, but it's still an instant conversation piece
venus fly traps do produce something like salivate or stomach acid which decomposes parts of the fly so the plant can take its nutrients.
but you're right it doesn't really eat the fly, the rest, e.g. the quinine parts, is left over and washed away by rain or wind when the trap opens again.
The plant needs for its prey to be alive, to ensure the hairs continue to be triggered so that the trap is closed tightly and the digestive enzymes are activated. If you just trigger the hairs yourself with a pencil, or drop an insect in that isn't alive, the trap will open again quite soon.
there are small hairs on the "skin" of the plant "mouth". if more then 2 or more hairs are tutched, it triggers, this is so it doesn't use more energy then it gains. so lets say a small ant comes along, it has about 1 colerie and it takes probubly 3calories to close the trap, while a house fly has like 5 calories and it gains 2.
because you need to be a vegetarian to own a pet plant? or are you special because you're a vegetarian who happens to have a plant that eats insects -.-.
strange that a creature like this without a hart and brains can do this. i think its a sort of a reflex. it closes if the plant comes in touch with something warm like a fly. i liked those things:D
it doesnt feel things warm, they have trigger hairs at each sides of their modified leaves so that they closes when the hairs are moved, and digests th insect with its juices, leaving th exoskeleton in the leave when it opens
Hi, if you like you can feed the plant. If not, the plant catch the flys by its own -if flys in the room. To feed the plant with living flys is more funny. The plant takes only living flys
@simon1210muc i grow mine outside. it caught a wasp yesterday! thats why they are so good for outdoor not indoors. plus, you can just leave them out all winter and they come back in the spring
very cool video
