I can,t help making a comment. The group you see are all now in Heaven's Choir.Mr.Jack Toney was a fantastic lead singer and wrote many great songs.Rosie..what else can be said.Doy Ott was an American Indian and his job was to arrange all the music for The Statesmen. Then "Big Chief"Jim Wetherington,an outstanding bass.Hovie Lister was also a Pastor..Nearly every Gosple quartet today uses the old arrangements from the Statesmen and that by itself is the sincerest form of respect.Bless 'um all.
Jack was a great lead singer, one of the best, and this particular Statesmen Qt. was probably the best there ever was. No one could touch Rozie on "O, What a Savior."
The Statesmen's original recording (with Jack Toney) was on an RCA Camden realease called "Songs of Faith". It featured one new recording by each of the members, and the rest was older recordings with Jake Hess. It came out in 1964.
This is my favorite song ever done by the Statesmen. Jack Toney, along with James Blackwood, were the best of the best as lead singers. We will hear them again in heaven.
Bass singer "Big Chief" Wetherington died of a massive heart attack on 3 October 1973 while attending the National Quartet Convention in Nashville. He is buried in a small cemetery just outside Atlanta, Georgia.
Jack was one of the greats!

A real treat to see and hear Jack Toney. I remember when he sang with the Dixie Echoes before Dale came along.

I know the Big Chief died in 1973 in Atlanta, Doy in 1986, Rosie at 61 or 62, Jack at 70, and Hovie not too long ago, except time flys bye!

Chief was only in his early 50s when he died. Way too young.
