it would be cool to see this show on nowadays althouth it might not be as much of a guessing game because with celebrities being everywhere thanks to the internet, the panel would just know them by their voice. Ah well, still a fun simple show!
lol, when the road show came to boston years ago, in perhaps the late 50's i remember my mother going to the colonial theatre to see that production.
at the same time a fire was alarmingly reported reported in a downtown hotel. it had, i believe followed fires in hotels in other cities, in fact in the same cities where the same production of "the sound of music" appeared!
you guessed it... and unfortunately, it was found that one or two of the children in the play were setting the fires!
@kevo1296 - the family has never dropped the "von." It is correct to refer to the family as "the Trapp family" but the individual members use the name "von Trapp."
That's how they're listed on the web site for the lodge in Vermont that's owned by the family.
The "Von" has nothing to do with the title of Captain. "Von" is used as a identification in Europe which means this person/persons are of noble birth. (Duke, Baron, etc.,) Von is "from" is Deutsch (German). Only someone of noble birth is allowed to use "VON" as part of their name.
Lichtbroeder ... yes, the script writing is how we are taught to write in America, so most of our handwriting will look the same. As we get older, we all seem to add our own little distinctive flare to it!
This is so cool. I notice when Lauri signs in her writing is exactly like a penfriend I had in America, do all Americans write that way? Neat post, I am trying to find out how long Lauri Peters was in the Broadway stage show as she went into a couple of movies around 196. If anyone can help around this info I would be happy. I am a New Zealander.

Regarding "von": The German prefix "von" means "of " or "from" and has no special military association. In the Middle Ages (before there were surnames) it was used to denote a person's place of origin. So a butcher or baker named Hans, born in Leipzig, was called Hans von (from) Leipzig, and "von Leipzig" over time became a family name. Later, "Von" was also used to denote nobility, as in "von Trapp", and in this context can likewise mean "of" or "from" a certain city, region, family, etc.
What memories! "The Sound of Music" was the first Broadway show I saw. The children were all wonderful! I corresponded with Mary Martin, Patricia Neway and even got a Christmas card from Laurie Peters (very sweet)...Theodore Bikel told me a story, that because Mary's eyesight without glasses
(she got contacts later in run) wasn't very good. She could only recognize the children by their size and hair color.
@perlster In real life they are not related, but on stage, they are related. I think they were answering to what they were in real life as opposed to on stage.
I have no idea why people gave you a thumbs dwn for making a clever joke! I guess they have no sense of humor or they forgot the song, but I got your humor and gave you a thumbs on both your comments, but now ppl will probably thumb me dwn!!!
@DragonSporks yeah but when it comes to stage and movies, things are often changed. in the movie of the sound of music Liesl is played be Charmian Carr who was actually 21 at the time!
It was; however, the 'von' is a prefix indicating an Aristocrat or Royal--in this case, their father, Georg, was a Baron. Since the family immigrated and were eventually naturalized, they dropped the title from their name...just as my family did.
@thezaylady ....You're..wrong!!!.... as explained by Littlegrabnes and lichtbroeder, Von means 'from' and is used to noble names.... like 'de' in France.... for example: Bernard de Laville.... and so on.

@CadillacL "Von" is an identification of the Captain's rank. Because their father was a captain, Von was put in front of their name. Their name is simply Trapp.
@CadillacL "Von" is a German (and Austrian) title of nobility, technically not the surname. It roughly means "from the house of...." Their father was a Baron, so the family can call themselves "Von Trapp"
Let me get this straight -- two of the girls are both 12 and the two boys are both 13. Snowdon and Dunne are shall we say mature for their years. I guess they make up for Mary Martin who was even then a little long in the tooth to be playing an Austrian peasant novice.
The original "Sound of Music" production had run on Broadway about seven months when the kid cast made this memorable 1960 appearance. If I had been the youngsters, I would have been ticked that they didn't let me walk down the panel with Lori Peters to shake hands. At least Dorothy Kilgallen waved goodbye.
Isn't it the von trapp family

@CadillacL one of the kids refers to her character as """" Von Trapp. so youre right
MPL029 1 year ago
@MPL029 "Von" is a military reference. The "Von Trapp" family simply means "the family of the Captain."
When the kid referred to her character as "Von Trapp," she was acknowledging that her character's father was a captain.

They dropped the Von because there was an anti-German feeling after the war.
