As Hamlet says, Charles is "caviare to the general" i.e. for the sophisticated palate. cf. the scene here where "she" takes his top off: the audience laughs because when she does, he is "flat chested" and suddenly any transgression is solely in the minds of the audience. There's a whole layer of quite heady alienation-play which is different from Craig & Jim's delicious embodiments. Charles makes you work hard to "place" what you're seeing even as you laugh at this absurdly grande grande dame.

A very talented actor and playright. Psycho Beach Party & Die Mommie Die are two of my favorite films, wonderful homages to a genre that is sadly missed.
