@mustwinder actually severe cramping and vomiting are both classic symptoms of morphine withdrawal. The way it is portrayed here is mild compared to what many victims experience especially in the second and third days following the last dose.
I think they over exaggerate the withdrawals just a little bit. I had withdrawals from oxycontin (which is far worse than morphine) and although they were terrible...they were not anything like they portray here. Futhermore, I think alcohol withdrawals are WAY worse than any opiate withdrawal. You may feel like killing yourself with opiate withdrawal, but alcohol withdrawal CAN kill you! It's HORRIBLE!!!!
Wow! Walnut Grove's brand of rehab. Withdrawal symptoms are scary! Shouldn't Doc Baker have been there throughtout the detox, just to check if Albert doesn't have a heart attack or something from the shock.
I can't believe Albert is doing this. I mean, once you're addicted it's hard to stop, I understand that, but I just can't believe he started. Oh and he's hot. lol :3
My guess is for Albert, they mixed something like maybe milk and water together (or perhaps something thicker). If you notice, the camera cuts take place right between each... erm... retch, meaning they probably cut to let him get more of the concoction in his mouth before they started filming again. Hope that helps to appease your curiosity! :)
I agree, I think it's really interesting what people come up with! I also love where some sound effects come from! I've heard that one of the best sound effects for bones breaking is to break a carrot in half! Who'd have thought? It's really awesome! Oh cinema, how you are amazing! :D

having the flu times 10, while every bone aches, your gut liquifies, your sinuses clog, you can't sleep, you feel like you are having a bad acid trip- all your thoughts are depressing horrible, its very common to have hallucinations, your muscles tense and shake, you have hot and cold flashes,goosebumps...i could go on and on. i am very happy to hear that so many of you were able to avoid these miseries. you are very blessed.

Withdrawl from opiates, as well as alcohol can easily be fatal- in the form of heart attack or stroke. your blood pressure rises dangerously when you are detoxing from these two. A high threshold for drugs as a result of abuse is called a tolerance. People do not have strong physical withdrawls from cocaine, but the mental clutch of cocaine is unbelievably powerful.

I can imagine how physically stressed Albert's stomach and how strained his heart must have been when he was vomiting and as he collapsed back on the bed afterwards.
I felt extemely sorry for him when he was going through withdrawal symptoms, especially when he said "Oh, God, it's starting all over again", grasping o
on tightly to the curtain near him, as he began to shake and scream again.
They did amazing acting this out. My dad and I are watching this right now, and I am completely taken back on their amazing acting skills. Kudos to them both.
Listen carefully between 4:08 and 4:11, when Albert was shouting as Charles went into the room to help him, his dialouge overlaps his screams. (When he yells, "What's happening?", it is heard twice after the first time he says it.)
I don't know if that matters, but just wondered if anyone else caught that.
The beginning scene is just too brilliant for words. a lot of the little house viewers were kids so im sure it was rather scary to watch . this episode is mostly for adults i reckon. kids wouldnt understand it. youre brilliant for uploading these.

Charles is a great father (and so was Michael Landon himself as a person). He'd never ever give up on his children, no matter how bad things got.
unlike today, there weren't many medicines to help people with withdrawal back then (not even sure if there are any today). all Charles could do was try comfort him and try to hold him to protect Albert from accidentally injuring while he was going through the withdrawal effects. i feel horrible for both Charles and Albert.
this might be a dumb question, but is it possible for a person who trying to withdraw from abusing drugs day after day to not experience the pain or symptoms of withdrawal? talking about all drugs (from hard/illegal drugs to soft OTC medicines).
@starrbeatlesqueen All addicts that abuse drugs suffer from withdrawl or pain symptoms to some degree...especially if the abuser is trying to stop taking drugs. Albert's case show the extreme side of what drugs can do to an individual. From a student nurse point of view, this is my opinion on the matter. However,I am no expert on the issues of drug abuse. Not yet, anyway... lol : D
@Emotional2000 I have a question as to why one of Albert's withdrawal symptoms were violent vomiting. Is that normal to happen during a withdrawal from morphine (or any other hard drugs like it)?
(Also when Albert was throwing up, why did it look like he was vomiting milk or something?)
@starrbeatlesqueen If you are only an occasional user and your body is not physically addicted then more than likely you won't go thru withdrawal. It is when your body becomes physically addicted after a period of abuse is when you go thru withdrawal because your body doesn't have what it is usually getting.
@starrbeatlesqueen Everybody is different and therefore experiences different symptoms and a different degree of severity. Some people may only have slight withdrawals like insomnia, nausea, diarrhea...basically like having a really bad flu. Others can have seizures, extreme abdominal pain, hallucinations etc. IT depends on SO many different factors. But if you are a heavy drug user and just stop cold turkey...you are going to suffer through something. Guaranteed.
Yes it is sad when I was a child and first saw this I thought it was awful and the most disturbing scene I had ever seen it scared the hell out of me expecially when he lost control of his legs. Did things like this really happen back then?
@jamajezzie Yes, many Americans during the1800's were chronic abusers of morphine. Back then, the drug was legal and used for medical purposes only. Most doctors of this time period did not yet grasp the complete side effects of this drug until the late 1800's.

Michael Landon put on a totally sappy performance here: WAY over-the-top. Landon got too much control of fthe show, and that's when it started to go downhill.
The emotion on Michael Landon's face I'm sure was genuine during the scenes where his character was helping his son. Michael Landon was a genuinely kind hearted person in real life (wish I have had a chance to meet him).
All I have to say about this episode is t that Charles and Albert are really strong actors... seeing someone that you love your son going through something like that had to be so heartbreaking to watch!!!!!!!! I love this episode!!!!!
Their acting in this episode was the best out of the whole series. They have amazing chemistry! This has to be my favourite episode. Its a good learning lesson for anyone who wants to try drugs.
Wow...like everyone before me has said, incredible acting. Charles is soo strong. I can't imagine what it would be like to go through that let alone watch someone who you care for so much to go through it. And poor Albert. That would be so scary.
Vomiting is part of a heavy morphine addiction and when milk is the only thing in your stomach, it's milk that will come out first. But I guess in this case it was only symbolic.
This is great acting and a great series. This episode scared me out of ever doing drugs as well. Just to think, Heroin is at least 2-3 times stronger than what Albert did. Think of how bad withdrawls would be with Cocaine, much less Heroin. I think every child about 11 or 12 should watch this episode. Unfortunately, probably not enough of them do.
That withdrawal scene is one of the most depressing/traumatic scenes that I recall seeing from my childhood. Always stuck with me. What a great episode, fantastic acting.
They did 9 seasons. Michael came back for a 2-3 episodes (i think in season 9) This is by far one of his best performances as Charles Ingalls and also one of the most intense and saddest episodes I've ever seen in the series.
I agree; this was probably the best acting jobs I had seen either of them do on the series. I saw this when it first aired back when I was 11 or 12 and I think it was one of the things that scared me out of ever trying drugs! LOL
okay can someone please explain to me what was happening when albert's legs were going crazy and he was throwing up and stuff? it always makes me cry, but i'm not sure what's happening to him....
well i knew he was going through a withdrawl, but why was his body doing that? (sorry if i'm being annoying about it, i just really want to know what's happening) oh, and thanks for the videos!!
After you recover From a drug in this case morphine, your body gose through stages as your kinda being cleaned hence getting clean, you body gose throuh invilentary movments, cungested thoughts, and perfuse sweating, shaking, puking and what not,
Some people have it werse off when they get clean, Albert did a great jobing tryin to bring that to life
You're welcome for the epi... However, I don't think the answer to Albert's problem is to take more drugs... He has an addiction and he clearly needs help....
Morphine Withdrawal symptoms include but are not limited to:* restlessness* lacrimation *rhinorrhea* yawning* perspiration* *restless sleep* mydriasis* twitching and spasms of muscles* kicking movements* severe aches in the back, abdomen, and legs* abdominal and muscle cramps* hot and cold flashes* insomnia* nausea* vomiting* diarrhea* coryza* severe sneezing
* increases in body temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate
Bravo Matthew and Micheal....amazing performances on both parts! I'm so impressed!

They were both so brilliant in this episode, and this scene in particular. One of the best acting jobs I've ever seen in my life.

How could they act sooo well?!?!
How could Matt puke and stuff? ugh...

All I have to say about this episode is t that Charles and Albert are really strong actors... seeing someone that you love your son going through something like that had to be so heartbreaking to watch!!!!!!!! I love this episode!!!!!

This episode is touching.

Their acting in this episode was the best out of the whole series. They have amazing chemistry! This has to be my favourite episode. Its a good learning lesson for anyone who wants to try drugs.

he never married her.

Wow...like everyone before me has said, incredible acting. Charles is soo strong. I can't imagine what it would be like to go through that let alone watch someone who you care for so much to go through it. And poor Albert. That would be so scary.
AlanaXX11 2 years ago 3
question: why did charles plan to leave him there inthe first place?
talkape 2 years ago
because he had bad friends in the city and he was always getting arrested and stuff.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Yes dont do morphine, or you will vomit milk.
DaleDale3 2 years ago
Vomiting is part of a heavy morphine addiction and when milk is the only thing in your stomach, it's milk that will come out first. But I guess in this case it was only symbolic.

opiate based pain killer addiction can be this addicting. When first tried...it is a wonderful high........

Unfortunately, probably not enough of them do.
nathonics 3 years ago 3
good acting indeed !! Wonder whatever happened to Albert ??..Is he still acting ?
brianchhangte 3 years ago 6
That withdrawal scene is one of the most depressing/traumatic scenes that I recall seeing from my childhood. Always stuck with me. What a great episode, fantastic acting.

Tahnks alot , do you kno where to find the movies?
DazedButterFly 3 years ago
not a season 10, just three movies. you can buy them where you get the seasons in a set.they are called:
-look back to yesterday
-bless all the children(i think)
-the last farewell
-

Hey Emotional, Just a question, How many seasons did, LHOTP do?
DazedButterFly 3 years ago
They did 9 seasons. Michael came back for a 2-3 episodes (i think in season 9) This is by far one of his best performances as Charles Ingalls and also one of the most intense and saddest episodes I've ever seen in the series.
GisherJohn24 3 years ago 4
I agree; this was probably the best acting jobs I had seen either of them do on the series. I saw this when it first aired back when I was 11 or 12 and I think it was one of the things that scared me out of ever trying drugs! LOL
furrypurrylove 3 years ago 2
this was one of the saddest episodes ever. thank goodness albert and charles got through it. ( in fact, i have this episode at home! its season 9!)
sailorgirlat14 3 years ago 5
okay can someone please explain to me what was happening when albert's legs were going crazy and he was throwing up and stuff? it always makes me cry, but i'm not sure what's happening to him....
hipposrkewl145 3 years ago
He was going through withdrawl as a result of his drug addiction...
Emotional2000 3 years ago
well i knew he was going through a withdrawl, but why was his body doing that? (sorry if i'm being annoying about it, i just really want to know what's happening) oh, and thanks for the videos!!
hipposrkewl145 3 years ago
Becuase he is seeing things, and he doesn't know where he is or what's going on, I think. the withdraw, is making him go mad.
It's possibly like being incredably drunk, with the room spinning and feeling really heavy. Exsept that you feel pain, when your drunk you don't.
Rowan07001484 3 years ago 3
After you recover From a drug in this case morphine, your body gose through stages as your kinda being cleaned hence getting clean, you body gose throuh invilentary movments, cungested thoughts, and perfuse sweating, shaking, puking and what not,
Some people have it werse off when they get clean, Albert did a great jobing tryin to bring that to life
DazedButterFly 3 years ago 4
i love the line: "i'll die if i don'!" "you'll die if you don't stop!"

You're welcome for the epi... However, I don't think the answer to Albert's problem is to take more drugs... He has an addiction and he clearly needs help....
