It's easy to talk about "greed" and "purging" and "sheeple" and other one-word ideas, but the fact is that stuff like this is only preventable by the organizers. A crowd is a system with its own dynamics, and trying to apply the morality of an individual to it is like trying to apply morality to a hurricane.
People don't get hurt in situations like this because they get greedy and trample each other. They get crushed and asphyxiate from the pressure. The people pushing from behind don't realize that people in front are getting hurt. The people in front push forward because that's all they can do; there's a thousand pounds of pressure behind them. It's not primal greed and there's nothing the people in the crowd can do about it; it's ALL on the store to have proper crowd controls in place.
Many of us aren't first graders, we're grown adults who should've learned by now how to stay in line and not push others out. It isn't any store's duty to ensure that we all behave properly. True, Wal-Mart should've taken better precautions before something like this happened, but single filing adults and forcing them in line? Why did we come that far anyway? This is the greed of the people, not so much Wal-Mart.
@EmperorMarcusNovius I hope to live long enough to see the western word collapse, just out of curiousity. Its russian roulette, climate change bullet, nuclear war bullet, oil depletion bullet, others. There is simply not enough intellegent humans in charge, they are all in Labs, advising the politicians who are voted in by the brainwashed public, and have their own agendas.
I tend to agree with you, but the question is just how the purging takes places? The problem is that it is the system which purges and the the people who permit the system to exist in whatever form it exists at present, so just maybe we all need to rethink how this system should be?
I blame walmart for the lack of organization. There should be a line and security guys everywhere making sure nobody gets hurt. The problem here is like people blame people while the big walmart corporate gets richer saving cash in cuts of salaries, the big parasite of walmart getting bigger and saving expenses on salaries.
Ah yes the blame in this particular case does lie with Walmart, but the reason for the lack of security and the behaviour of the mass is that of greed, Walmart wants money and people want junk in order to feel good in a society where if you don't consume you are nothing, maybe just maybe it is the system that need to change just a little?
you are the prime example of a liberal douche that is killing america, blame everyone but the ones responsible, make criminals victims, and allow more frivolous lawsuits to kill businesses nationwide. you're saying that people cant police themselves and should be treated like children by their government
I'm English and that appealed to the Black humour part of my English humour. No disrespect to the victim here, but your comments sums it all up really, in a vary satirical form. Thank, for the smile.
Yes exactly spot on, unfortunately that sums it all up prefectly. I am considering a few ideas as to the images to go with you song. Thank you for sharing.
It is not mentioned much but the root of civilization is tribal, it is just a very big and often very badly organised affair with less sense of belonging, and many of the concepts which we view as noble are of barbarian origin. Humanity is a strange beast at times.
There can be no freedom without Responsibility, if people are not capable of being responsible then for their own sake and that of others they need control! Maybe this is why people are losing our sense of freedom, it is not that it is being taken away, it is that it is being given away! I am totally surprised that people can blame the shop rather that the crowd.
Frank Zappawas an interesting mind, very great artist. I can talk for the entire universe but in this corner of it on this little rock it is certainly true. Don't eat the yellow snow BOBBY BROWN;-))
I have hurd about this the day it happen, and it just adds to the reasons to just why I do not like.... Ok I will not bullshit you and say I do not like the idea of consumerism when I have more of a hate I have for it. Consumerism to a point is good but when people are fist fighting over the latest new toy that some show says is the best out there and people are being crushed to death, there is a problem there.
Yes, it shows that we as humans have lost all true concepts of what is important. Toys should be for child and it is normal for children to get excited, but in the past we learnt that as adults we have responsibilities, we may not want them but we have them. It seems that the result of consumerism is a state of never never land.
there have been tons of anti-consumerism bits in the news lately. i've also noticed it throughout pop culture in song lyrics, movie themes, etc. seems like a big guilt trip laid on us after years of consumerism rammed down our throats. seems like we are being prepped to accept a lower standard of living. the people trampling over others at walmart will be the first to accept the green police. the minds they are a changin'
Crowd have always been dangerous. Take a look into any evacuation plan or airport scheme. Crowd considered as a bunch of stubborn donkeys. And you can never blame it because it would be a corporation against citizen, or in particular case racists against 'bona fide' customers. Knock-knock case closed.
Well we should not hold that against her. A good friend of mine was killed in Liverpool in the a stampede at a football stadium, all so they could get in to watch a game!!! The Herd is dangerous!
It is a very interesting fact that in USSR during Lenin millions of people were safe to go on parades [some even drank a bit]. Football and even sale offs can cause deaths today. We're getting angrier and dumber.
snickers? as in the chocolate bar, when it first came out in the UK it was call Marathon! Maybe they just got a little confused I mean it is full of nuts!
I have never heard of squirrel acting so stupid in fact I would say that it would be very difficult to find a similar example in the animal Kingdom, excluding lemmings of course.
;) if you mean suicides, then it is only a myth. But if you are about population cycle then it might fit here;) from overpopulation to near extinction in a flash.
There are measured increases in stress at certain level of social group. and stress does effect behaviour, yes the lemming is figurative, but it does transmit a certain image ;-))
I saw this before I went out and thought about it on the bus across town, and thought which came to mind was a little strange. I remember that there is some talk of the dead walking among the living. Now i am not into all that scripture stuff, but there is a good chance that a lot is based on observation. Just maybe the translation was a little wrong, and the missed the adjective (Brain) of the noun Dead ;-)
Yes, they always need somebody to blame while doing nothing. Organize us, protect us, feed us, teach us. Only crazy one should be placed in the box with soft walls so he couldn't hurt himself.
This made me so mad. People are such cowards that they can't take any responsibility for others in need. You mean to tell me that nobody thought that anything was wrong with a man on the ground? It really makes me ashamed and embarrassed as a human being. Block an area and throw elbows if you have to in order to save that man!
All to buy some cheap and very often useless junk! Humanity is lost, and if people are blind to this then we are all in trouble, if the system crashes it will be every man for himself, unless we can re-find a true sense of community and true values.

Have you ever observed how a heard of chattel look when being led to the slaughter?

I imagine that it is similar, but they are a lot more reluctant (the chattel that is ;-)) maybe they at least have an idea of what is going on.

Mindless Stampeding Chattel... I fear how they would react in wartime.

this is sad to see humanity trample each other for man made stuff.
Yet another blood sacrifice to the temple of Walmart.

Words fail me (so I'll plagiarise a little instead)...
"it is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."

Proverbs aside, personal freedom is contingent and predicated upon individuals exercising responsibility individually. I'm seeing very little of late.
Shame on us.
