And you wonder why the DVD's of older shows like this. And shows like Family Guy have to copy stuff like this. Its because we were the last generation of children that had something called Quality Educational Television oh and on top of that I was allowed to watch Tex Avery cartoons Woody Woodpecker Looney Tunes AND Three Stooges and Little Rascals!
I remember learning to recognize the numbers at the beginning of these and the Mister Rogers episodes to be able to see if the afternoon episode was the same one I'd watched in the morning. I felt so smart!
Yes, it's the show number. Sesame Street does the same thing.
The numbering wasn't always that straightforward though. Seasons 5 and 6 restarted the numbering back at 1, with letters after them (they did this because one way the show later made money was to package each of those later seasons a part of a school-year long curriculum, and were sold to schools that way).
Ugh...the 70's sure had some damn catchy themes songs...makes me kinda sad I wasn't alive then to be around when it was original on (DAMN YOU 1990's FOR MAKING ME BORN THEN!)
But I do like the revival series of it that PBS Kids has just started.
I will always remember that line: "Hey, you guys!" It's what caught my eye when they planned to film a new version in Newark, NJ: The headline was "Hey, you guys! 'Electric Co.' to film in Newark". Too classic! Thanks.
OMG, I remember watching this show when I was little. I definitely remember the "hey you guys!!!!" in the beginning of the introduction, Spider Man, and that jungle lady. I even had the record! I now own "The Best of Electric Company Volume 2" on DVD. I want to get volume one as well. Thanks for the memories. :)
Yeah. On the episode where Meg works at this Wal-Mart-esque store and the store begins using the town's power to keep itself in business (though I think the FG version was a little different than this. Either they used the first season or they changed it to avoid a lawsuit).
This takes me back to simpler times...wonderbread and skippy, yoohoo, or hawaiian punch... my plastic record player and my 45's...playing up, up and away in my beautiful balloon.
You can rent the Electric Company on VHS from the library?!
In some of my files I actually found some pages from the Electric Company MAGAZINE, which I was subscribed to in the 1st grade. Great, groovy, goofy stuff, just like the show. Part of being a cool kid.
There was a magazine, too? Cool! By the way, I don't think they have 'The Electric Company' tapes at the library anymore, but I bet all the seasons can be bought on DVD now.
Everyone hhould try this: sync up the theme songs from season one and two (the beginning drumbeats must match) to hear a collected and full bodied theme song.
These were the credits for the second season (1972-1973) and they were credited to "The Short Circus and Friends" on the original cast LP. The first season opening credits featured only the adult cast and the opening music was the same, but Rita Moreno's "Hey you guys!" wasn't at the start of the theme, and it was sung by the "adult cast."
I taught myself how to play this on piano. Jazzy! :)

This to me was the best. Same group singing from season one but polished with just a little edge to it. PERFECT!
