  • I also had this suffering bit shoved down my throat by the catholic school i attended when i was a lad.

    Offer your pain up to christ for your sins.

    This sickening statement started me on the path to atheism.

    Actually i should thank the RCC for this as it led to a great positive change in my life.

    I find it interesting that you as a christian would view suffering so different, maybe as honourable, from how you now - as an atheist - interpret it...

    It must be something subconscious as you said, because if they were to really start thinking about it, I can't believe they would not come to the same conclusion as I and you did...

  • A funny thing happens when you're hopped up on religion. You compartmentalize your beliefs, try to rationalize them, and perform these twisting, excruciating mental gymnastics to make them fit into your model of reality.

    I remember very vividly believing things that made no sense, for no reason other than it fit with my religion. I voted for Bush in 2004 because my pastor stirred up enough resentment for gay marriage and abortion that I felt compelled to do "God's will." Sickening, I know...
