  • Hi, nicely done for newbies like me. Question: when I get my get back my pattern picture through the fill and stroke dialogue on "pattern", the picture returns in a mosaic pattern (the same picture repeated endlessly). Don't know what I do wrong... thanks for helping out!

  • I agree with the other comments - stupid intro, but a really nice little tutorial. Thanks

  • Thank you for posting. :)

  • this sounds like so much fun!!! definitely gonna try this!! thanx :-D

  • Great tutorial :)

  • So what I'm gonna do is

  • Terrible tut. What was with all the wasted time at the beginning? I didn't think it was ever gonna start. Besides, Photoshop or GIMP are the tools for this job.

  • @Bonjourneau - sorry you thought it was a waste of your time. Thankfully you are in the minority. There are a quite a few bitmap related treatments that are done far quicker and more efficiently in Inkscape or Illustrator than in Photoshop or the Gimp, especially when you are talking about work done for web output.

  • @rfquerin - I should, and will, start with an apology. The intro had me so infuriated that I didn't actually watch your tutorial through. As you say, this is ok for web output and such. I'm new to Inkscape. It looks like a terrific program, but I've had fun producing pictures like this simply and as quickly with the GIMP, which is another terrific free program. Once the hair-pulling intro was over, you explained your technique very succinctly though. Good stuff.

  • @Bonjourneau - well there is a method to my madness. We've now done over 100 Inkscape screencasts over at our site screencasters dot heathenx dot org and I still do the sped up intros for my portion of them (there are two of us doing them). My reasoning is that I want to give the person a very quick idea of what the tutorial will let them do without wasting their time having to watch the whole thing to find out. I try to keep them at 30sec or so, but this was one of my first.

  • Fantastic tut, and easy to follow, very clear directions too. thanks much and keep up the good work!

  • Great job... thanks for the techniques :)

  • nice use of the pattern tool. Great tip. Thanks, Michael

  • YOU SOUND JUST LIKE RICK FROM TRAILER PARK BOYS!

  • then how do you save the edit picture to open in picture, bcos mine cannot open in picture or paint..i want to put the picture i edit somewhere like to my display picture.

  • I've just started using Inkscape (to make Dxf files for my Silhouette cutter...awesome for rhinestones) and I came across your tutorial. I have Photoshop Elements and love it, but your 3D pic instructions are wonderful. Thank you very much for the posting!

  • ...can u use this as photo-shop? cuz i have it as well but im compleatly lost at it, like i want to put the background like of city view behind me, then just like make the smokes stand out if im smokin and all that, so if u got tips fo me or atleast somethin, hit me back, thanx , nice vid tho 5/5

  • YOU DIDNT MAKE THIS!!!!!! screencasters.heatenex made it!!!!

  • LOL. Actually, I am one half of the team at screencasters. So stop yelling at me.

    Apology accepted. ;)

  • quick tip: double clicking on a path with the node edit tool (f2) adds a new node where you clicked

  • @jimbobmcfred I was about to say the same thing... but good tutorial.

  • after we done editing, how to save and view the picture? using JPEG?

  • Once you are done, you select everything and choose File->Export to Bitmap. This will get you a png file. Then you can either use that or convert it into a jpeg using The Gimp or Photoshop or something else.

  • .... perfect...nice video.

  • OMG! THATS UBUNTU !! How do you install your recorder and inkscape there?

  • I has inkscape installed by default, as well as a screen recorder!

  • You can use a number of different recorders, I use Istanbul, very stable but only does your screen, you can use your microphone with audacity and then you can merge them as a video.

  • This was great! Very understandable and easy to follow (just downloaded Inkscape a few days ago)

  • yo...who know how I can save my art as a picture...please answer I need that information

  • Just "save as" jpg tiff or whatever. Be sure to click bellow "select file format". It's a bit random but it works, lol

  • like the intro , compiz-fusion ROX!

  • Very nice ... thank you!

  • I would use Object->clip->set instead of converting to pattern.

  • I might be wrong, but I think if you use Object-clip-set, it ends up creating a clipped image and not a path. So you can't add any nodes or alter the shape of it once you do the clip. You can't even convert that clipped shape to a path either I don't think.

  • now its possible to edit clipping path with node tool, without unsetting clip.

  • great tut, I have a problem tho....

after I do the "union" part my whole image flips upside down.... I've tried adjusting the image size & a couple of other things...any suggestions ? TIA.

  • if u make the path u should start with the node in the left bottom corner, it's a mistake that recurs quite often if u don't know. If u don't start drawing the shape with the node in the left bottom, then u get those flips.

  • Thank you very much ..... I'll try that.

  • I think Legionwizard is likely right. I never even thought of the node order because I had done this using a rectangle converted to a path. I guess you couldn't just re-flip the object back the right way after you do the union?

  • Thank you sir :-)

  • nice vid dude thanx

  • Well Inkspace is wonderful and thanks to you Guys for making the Demostration so best.

  • Thank You!

  • Thank you very much for his awesome demo!

  • Nice, i never knew you could do that with nikscape. I like the beginning of the vid, but it'd be cool if u didn't zoom in...

  • cool

  • Nice effect, I was thinking that it would have been neat if the arm had a shadow that came into the picture, adding more depth.

  • that is pretty cool

  • Okay, thanks.

  • Do you know any place where I could download this for free?

  • Yep. Go to inkscape DOT org. Or just google 'Inkscape'. The application is completely free and is available for windows, mac and linux.

  • this is crazy cool. Im going to design my site with these.

  • great vids. thanks for the inkscape tuts. very high quality.

  • This rocks. Your screencasts are totally inspirational. The effect you show here is also something I've never seen in Inkscape. Awesome!

  • A very good tutorial for newbies man :)

  • Nice job rquerin. I have seen this effect before but never with Inkscape.

  • Sweetness. I love Inkscape. Hey couldn't you duplicate the patern path a make that one the shadow? That way both the frame and the popped out photo would have a shadow.

  • Glad you liked the video. I was thinking that about the shadow as well. Another thing is that it might look a little more realistic if I had put a shadow on the white border beneath her arm (which is sticking out).

    Thanks for the comment.
