  • I appreciate the classic series, but being exposed to the more recent Doctors, David and Matt are my faves (followed closely by Tom Baker, Paul McGann and Peter Davison.) I totally agree with Sarah Jane at the top, the only point I would make is that Donna deserves to be on this list...and I have to ask, I know most classic fans dislike Adric but I adore him. To me he's a relatable character, a young person with a lot to offer who is greatly ignored. What is your opinion about him?

  • I almost cried at the end =[

    great video

  • Romana is the best!

  • I like Rose.

  • 9:47 Sadly that won't be the case.

    Elisabeth Sladden RIP

  • My one problem with Rose was that her relationship with the Doctor was a bit unhealthy. It seemed like he was using her as an emotional crutch to cope with the trauma caused by the Time War.

  • The thing about the Doctor having a more romantic relationship with his companions is that it actually makes some sense. I mean, you've got a young women essentially living with a guy who appears to be about her age. They go through a lot together and even though it might not be sexual, they wind up with a very strong emotional bond. And because they're in such close quarters, it's often inevitable that one of them will become attracted to the other.

  • I think Donna Noble is one of the greatest new series companions. She wasn't in love with the Doctor and she was another case of him turning someone into a better person. Shame they had to take it all away, but they did the same thing to Jamie and Zoe.

  • Where's k9 or the brigadier

  • @melbaa12 Romana too always showed that she was better than the Doctor, except for being generally less experienced. For example she was better at piloting the TARDIS, and when he borrowed a sonic screwdriver she had built, the Doctor claimed it wasn't as good as his, but tried to keep it for himself and give her back his own one instead. :)

  • NEW NO.1 AMY POND!!!!

  • @DALEK2626 Yuck!

  • Id go along with most of what u say, I dont really play faves with these things, theres too many companions to mention but disappointing you never included Ace, because she was the companion who smashed through the mould of damsels in distress screaming all the time, as did Leela As for Sarah Jane I've said this before but I think she's overrated. I'm starting to like her better now they're giving her more depth as a character in SJA but as far as the old series went I duno what the hype was abt

  • 10. adric one of the smartest one of few not from earth he died to stop the cybermen 9. seargent benton one the ones in the most adventures saves doctor on many times 8. jo grant 7. amy 6. captain jack 5. rose she killed the dalek emperor and would do anything. 4. sarah jane 3. brigader always had the dr's back put up with his crap 2. jamie fighter and hero 1. zoe smartest of them. could fly space ship and was so dang Hottt!!!! Was in lost episodes so most people don't know her.

  • @jaeman21 Yeah Zoe was hot, shame she was from the 60s,

  • 10.Sarah Jane 9. Liz 8. Ian 7. Romana 2 6. Leela 5. K9 4. Amy 3. Brigadier 2.ace 1.Jamie

  • 1. Ace 2. K9 3. Donna 4. Zoe 5. Liz 6. Rory 7. Leela 8. Romana I 9. Nyssa 10. Harry

I hate Rose but all the others are fine

  • I don't hate on any who fan regardless of what series they have or haven't watched. I started with the new series, then I went back and started from when Tom Baker became the Doctor. I did that because I wanted to but that doesn't make me better or worse then any doctor who fan because we are all fans regardless of the number of series under our belts. My top 10. 1. Ace 2. Romana II 3. Rose 4. Captain Jack 5. Teagan 6. Peri 7. Brigadier 8. Sarah Jane 9. Leela 10. Amy & Rory! Great vid!

  • Comment removed

  • I can't say I agree with any of those. Lol. But still a great review/argument. :) My top ten are: 1) Rose 2) Donna 3) Martha 4) Jack 5) Jenny 6) Amy 7) K-9 8) Sarah Jane 9) Peri 10) Nyssa I abhor Leela.
  • Shame Donna didnt make it onto the list. Her exit was by far the most tragic since Adric's death. Plus she is the only female companion in the new series to not want to get into the Doctor's pants and they had a confrontational brother-sister like relationship.

  • I like how Barbara and Ian count as one, and Romana counts as 2. I agree on the list, though I favor Ben Jackson as a loyal companion, not so much larger than life Jack Harkness.

  • I like your video although I haven't watched much of the classic series (just finished The Dalek Invasion of Earth). I like Ian a quite a lot and Barbara's good. However, I don't understand why people like Susan so much, I mean, she was really, really annoying, especially for a Time Lady (or a part Time Lady, I'm not quite sure). Anyway, I'll continue watching and I'll probably comment again :).

  • SPOT ON about Liz and her general wondrousness! She was my first companion, and remains one of my absolute favorites!

I put Romana- especially Romana II- above Sarah Jane in my personal list, but Sarah is still absolutely wonderful!!

I'd also like to echo daleksvscybermen and say THANK GOD there are people out there who don't worship Mary Sue- er, I mean, Rose.

  • @LaraElSupergirl I liked Rose but I would have liked her much more if the Doctor had stopped worshiping her. It's annoying because she started out as a sort of everygirl but eventually entered Mary Sue territory by the fourth season.

  • finally a vid in which rose ISN'T regarded the best companion

  • Excellent call on Liz, truly underrated and marvellous!

  • Great video and explanations! Ian and Barbara were the best...

  • my 1# fave is Sarah-jane Smith then Jo Grant and then brigadier leithbridge-stewart then K-9

  • Very nice :~)

The only character from the classic series I think is really noticeably missing is Ace, who in my opinion was one of the most fascinating and fun of all of them

Thank you for giving Leela the credit she is due. She was far more than just a pretty face. I loved the way Louise played her - her catlike movements, bold and ferocious spirit (see 'The Sun Makers) and great intelligence that grew with her time with the Doctor

  • you were spot on with sarah-jane,but you left out adric and the Brigadeer

  • I completly agree with TheBigBlueBox on Liz Shaw she was pretty awsome (BTW dont beat me up) (please)

  • where whoul k9 be in the top 15? i think 11th

  • I like ace the best..

  • Donna Noble is my #1.

  • y were ther diffrent versions of romana

  • @porqtevasjuan Romana was a Time Lady from Gallifrey, so she could regenerate like the Doctor.

  • Love this, but where is Rose!

  • grace (daphne ashbrooke) 8th doctor paul mcgann fox movie...i deeply enjoyed grace and super pissed when fox aired sliders instead of new doctor who...for me my super-dreadnought capsized and exploded sinking below the ice cold waves of dispair!

  • ten is a very small number!...i vote for ace (sophie aldred) jo grant...leela (louise jameson) romana-1 (mary tamm) rose (billie piper) / @ milwaukee

  • While i do like the Big Finish audio, i find don't like to think that the Peter Davison and Nicola Bryant didn't have any big adventures between Planet of Fire and The Caves of Androzani. It adds to the fact that the 5th Doctor gave his life to save someone he barely knows because its the right thing to do.

  • Doesnt like romance check

  • Good Choice. S.J.SMITH is the Best no discusion about that ;o) my second Fav. Comp. is DONNA NOBLE (i know, i know know the world wide fans stoned my to DEATH) i like her attitude (realy) and sche has a special kind of Sexapeal (realy i mean that). KEEP POSTING i enjoy. ;o))

  • People dispute Liz Shaw's position as a Companion? That's strange. I know the Brig is heavily disputed, but I didn't know Liz was. Weird.

  • JadesVidz, as a experienced old fan id like to recommend a couple of great

    classic episodes

    The Curse of Fenric

    Two Doctors

    Caves of Androzani

    Talons of Weng Chiang

    Spearhead from Space

    The War Games

    The Daleks

  • @guzzaguzza1 I also Recomend Genesis of the Daleks. It's a must-see as it explains the backstory of the main villains. Not to mention that it contains a) a mindblowing storyline and b) lots of men in black leather XD

  • yeah Jamie, I loved him.

I did have a crush on Adric. he was part of a great threesome of companions who travelled with Peter Davison. I remember all the childish bickering between Adric and the Doctor. It was sad when Adric died bravely saving Planet Earth from the Cybermen

  • I was always partial to the Brigadier because in some ways he's the perfect foil to the Doctor, they never seem to agree on anything but he's alway the man of action when needed.

  • Love to Peri, by the way. Boy, she would have been even better (as would Six) if they'd been allowed to continue their run together.

  • Oh, and that's not even counting Audio Books and Books.

  • You know, Who's actually had a good lot of male companions. Not as many as females, but still.

Ian, Steven, Ben, Jamie, Harry, Adric, and Turlough. Arguably, you could also add The Brigadier, K-9, and Kamelion (the last two were male personas) to this group, as well as Yates and Benton if you just felt like throwing in U.N.I.T.

All in all that's 7 (or 10) male companions. Quite a lot.

  • @NicxCoay Well, they don't wanna keep the young girls (and older boys) from watching the show by using an all-male cast. The protagonist is a guy, and the show's main cast never exeeded four people, so it's understandable that they use more female companions... Still, some of the male Companions DID kick as, with my favourite being Ian Chesterton.

  • @KendrixTermina Yeah, Ian was great. He, Jame, and Adric were probably my favorite guy companions, not counting the Brigadier.

  • @KendrixTermina Yeah, that makes sense. They did a way to bring in the girl audience and having hot female companions probably help bring in some guys, too. I agree, though, some guys were really awesome. Ian was great, and I also liked Harry and Jamie. I liked Adric, too, but he was less kick-butt and more just fun.

  • Lis Shaw and Jo Grant were also the doctor's assitants.

  • wheres adric!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • hotness rating

    Katy Manning 1

    Sarah Jane 2

    Rose 3

  • DONNA IS THE BEST :D

  • Great video, though I missed Jo and The Brig. Here's my top ten. 1. Jo Grant 2. Romana II 3. The Brigadier 4. Nyssa 5. Tegan Jovanka (Can you believe it?) 6. K-9 (That's right.) 7. Sarah Jane 8. Romana I 9. Adric (Yep, him too.) 10. Martha Jones Not the most conventional list, but there you have it. I have to be one of the only people with Tegan and K-9 on here. And undoubtedly the only one with Adric.
  • @PrincexJoker I liked Adric's character, it seemed very believable especially with Tom Baker, he seemed like a teenage boy eager to impress his dad. He's nowhere near my top 10. Tegan...i could never figure out why she wanted to stay in the TARDIS with the Doctor, that kinda bugged me, still she was in some really good stories with Davidson.

  • Great to find someone else who likes Adric. I wish he could have had more time to travel with Baker, 'cause I think he was better with him. Or more time as the only companion instead of squashed in with two others all the time.

Yeah, her complaining could get annoying. I think she was just insecure. She knew it wasn't safe with the Doctor and that she'd have no control over any situation, so she wanted to leave for something safer. Yet, she really always wanted to stay.

  • I agree with Sarah Jane she grew the most but Leela was my fav as a fearless warrior. Turlough was the worst,a lot like Malfoy.

  • My personal top ten: 1. Sarah Jane 2. Ace 3. Martha Jones 4. Jamie 5. Brigadier Letbridge Stewart 6. Romana I 7. Zoe 8. Romana II 9. Jo Grant 10. Rose
  • No. 1

    Leela

  • YEY FOR PERI

i like her - not a fan of the accent tho

  • I disagree with you on the whole romance issue in the new series. I like it a lot, adds some warmth and light and humanity to what can be a very cold, dark, and alien series. You gotta have some balance, and i think if you really look at some of the best female companions and the way they admired the Doctor, like Sarah Jane and Romana, you can get a hint of romance there.

  • @harveybullocks1281 thats they key tho, u got a hint, u didnt get bloody intergalactic cassanova, Dr Who was good cos it was understated like all the best series, Tennants era was the other way full of overblown sentimentalist soppy syrupy my heart will go on shyte that wasnt in the spirit of the show at all all so they could pull in a mainstream audience.

  • I agree with this list A LOT. I think you have excellent taste, my good sir. You have all my favourites on here: Jamie, Sarah Jane, Peri, Leela. Well, all except Frobisher, hahaha. He's not in a lot of stuff though, so there's not much to go on him. But he is just full of sass and awesome and that's why I love him. :D

Anyway, great top ten, I'm going to check out your other stuff when it's not 3 in the morning.

  • I agree with Frobisher; I only experienced him once in the Maltese Penguin, but for any character who spends most of his time masquerading as a giant penguin, I say he does it with awesome.

  • Just because you have the new series doesn't mean that you can't get hold of the classic series. They're on DVD at the library.

  • ian and barbara really set the bar for DW companions, plus they have great friendship bordering on romantic chemistry, brilliantly underplayed by both actors.

  • true about captain jack flirting with whatever moves! :-D

  • and some things that don't move!

  • ha ha ha! v true icecube280000!

  • You lot act as if 'new who' fans are a disgrace or something..Im only 14 and never grew up with doctor who, but I really have came to like the newer series. You cant exactly say I cant think above teen romance as you say, because I have never seen the old series, and the revived series has been a success. Its for the newer generation to grow up with and tell their kids about when THEY are older....It will be our classic series in 30 years..

    I speak for Younger viewers..

  • But being 14 doesn't stop you from getting some DVDs and watching some classic episodes.

  • Yes that is true but I dont wish to get the DVDs but I have seen Tom Baker breifly once or twice on Gold and I never said the Classics were not great, because the episodes i saw were good, (I like tom baker for his eccentricity) but like I said I never see the old series and Just because I really enjoy the new ones does not make me any less of a fan.

BTW I do agree with Cptn. Jack and Sarah Jane, they were good!

  • Enjoying the new series doesn't make you less of a fan. You've at least given the classic series a try, which is good. My problem is with the many so-called fans that watch solely because they're attracted to David Tennant and are pretty much ignorant about the history of the series.

  • Haha, I agree to that, all the mums that sit there going 'Phwoar!' at the Tv screen.

Then Again, David Tennant is very good looking, but I am more involved in the storylines of the show than dribbling over him..

  • If you like Sarah Jane though, you should check out some of her eps with Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee. I always recommend that era to new series fans who don't have much experience with the classic series. I would check out The Time Warrior, Genesis of the Daleks, Pyramids of Mars, or The Ark in Space...

  • Yeah alot of people have recommended Genesis of the Daleks.

I watched the episode where Tom Baker Says, ''Do You want a jelly baby?''

Not sure what episode that was, but it was very funny!

  • I can be a proud fan and say that I have seen every single (and I mean EVERY SINGLE) Doctor Who episode in existence! It took me over a year to do (from July/August 2008 to August 2009) but I did it. True, I did watch the new series first (and Tennant is my Doctor), but I love the Classic series stories and the Doctors too, like Tom Baker, Patrick Troughton, Sylvester McCoy, and especially Peter Davison. TB may be the most famous, but the 5th Doctor has truly captured my heart.

  • @harrietamidala1691 Davison was great. Baker and Pertwee and my Doctors, but Davison definitely comes in a close third.

  • @TheBigBlueBox Aye, like we didn't grow up drooling over Sarah-Jane, Leela and so on! Never stopped me enjoying the shows though. The new series is as good as the ones I grew up with for the most part (Matt Smith took a bit of getting used to but is growing on me now) but none have ever topped Genesis of the Daleks as my favourite storyline.

  • @TheBigBlueBox yeah id like to second that, if I hear one more female sop on about how cute David is and how much thye miss Rose I swear I'm gonna go on a killing spree and I agree with you on not being a fan of the new "romance" orientated Dr Who and you can blame EP Julie Gardner for that one, apparantly she plumped for Russ to write the Doc and Rose as a romance in the first place and that led to the absolute syrup that dominated Tennants era, sorry but none of that was Dr Who, was soap

  • @JadesVidz You don't have to get the DVDs or wait for it to come on TV. You can find virtually every episode here on Youtube, as well as other video sharing sites. I've just been going through the old Patrick Troughton episodes and they've had some excellent stories. You might notice a lot of similarity between him and Matt Smith's Doctor.

  • @TheBigBlueBox

No... but living in a country where you can't buy Who stuff might...

  • @RedheadDane Um, In this age of "whatever you want" in the world you can't whine that DW items are not avaliable to you. Search places such as the internet to find whatever it might be that you desire. That goes for just about anything you could ever want. Even in countries such as those run by dictators and deemed illegal to you, still you could get whatever it may be you desire. I did'nt say that it may be dangerous to own. But then, how it is that you even know about DW then???

  • @ManeLover2000

Well, Long story short; I know about DW from HERE! + the bits which has been shown on BBC Entertainment. (Which is always at least a season behind. They just showed "The Next Doctor")

You could say I sorta "entered through the back door". In fact it was because I was following the new BBC Robin Hood series (BEFORE they started to just kill everyone) and because Harry Lloyd also played a minor role in DW series 3 someone linked to a blooper-reel. I thought it looked funny...

  • @JadesVidz Here! Here! I am in TOTAL agreement! And... I Am exactly the SAME age as the entire total series (I was born in 1963). In that time I have seen EVERY SINGLE EPISODE (and I mean every show, small public service spots, X-mas specials... etc.) EVER MADE! I have right now all but two of those shows in my possession (in either dvd, vcr or internet versions down-loaded format. I would say that makes me in the very small minority as an expert in DW. The New Doc ROCKS. Period.

  • Yes! Liz Shaw! I was so shocked when she vanished with no explanation. Absolutely crushed! :( I had no issues with Peri, she was fun and provided a great balance to Colin Baker's attitude. Ian has to be my favorite companion, he MADE the series what it is. Hartnell, as great as he was, couldn't have done it without Ian. I was never particularly attached to Leela, she tended to get overly aggressive and irritating at times. No surprise with SJS as number one. :P

  • Really well done. Mmm, fourth and fifth doctor are my childhood ones but when I look at the fifth doctor dvds I'm really dissapointed and also I have the 8th Doctor movie and I want more so Big Audio here I come.

  • I'm pleased you included Liz & Ian/Barbara made the top Five. When I first watched Classic Who, I started from the beginning, and I adored Ian & Barbara; I kinda liked Ian more, but it's really true you can't split them. As for Liz, I agree that I've gotten the impression of lesser love for her. I haven't yet seen all Pertwee's stories, but I have seen his entire first season, and idk, there was just something I liked better about it than in later stories of his I've seen & Liz was lovely.

  • Unlike Liz & Sarah Jane, Jo had to grow on me. :/

  • when u said about liz at 3:42 u say she is the first to match th intellegence level. I disagree because i think Zoe was the first tomatch the intelegence level

  • No, I think Liz was a closer match then Zoe. Liz actually understood enough about the TARDIS to help the Doctor try to repair it.

  • thats a gd point, but zoe knew more about computers than the second doctor (The Invasion/ The Seeds of Death) and about her time zone (The Mind Robber)

  • Hey, what about Ace? Don't you like her? She was one of the few companions to beat the crap out of monsters! Also, she was the first companion to have more character development than any of her predecessors, and an actual backstory (which paved the way for more rounded characters like Rose, Martha, and definitely Donna for the new series).

  • Can you satisfy my curiosity BigBlueBox please? As an American, how convinced / impressed were you by Nicola Bryant's American accent as Peri. After all Ms Bryant is from Guidgord, surrey UK. Love the list btw, this list probably matches my own list for top ten companions. Although perhaps I'd put Ace in somewhere

  • No, Peri's accent was pretty bad. They probably should have kept her natural accent. British accents, especially on a girl like Nicola, are extremely sexy in my book. The main reason I have her on my top 10 is because of her big finish audio work which is very good for the most part...

  • Yeah, the Big Finish Audios really do redeem even the worst characters of the series (even Mel gets a major makeover).

  • A small point about one of the comments in the Liz Shaw part, she was not the first companion to be at the doctor's level, Zoe, who came before Liz was.

  • hmm, i like the mix u hav i agree with some and then again i diagree but of course we all hav different opinions! i like sarah jane but i think they've over used her slightyl. I diagree with ur new series comment! It was unrealstic that in the classic there was no sexual tension (and even in the new sereis there isnt In your face sexual content??! so u know! ) DONNA AND ROSE i feel should make it into ppls top ten! They were so gr8 i feel. Rose + 10's relationship waqs amazin and donna was fab

  • The major problem with sexual tension between the Dr and a companion, is that it undermines the show's foundation of the Dr being a 900 year old alien from Gallifrey. Such a being would be VERY different from humans, intellectually and emotionally. To allow the Dr base human desires is a very poor idea, as it destroys the show's premise.

Lis Sladen's run as Sarah Jane achieved DrWho's all-time consistently highest ratings. Such incredibly high ratings reflect a timeless popularity.

  • i suppose ur right! but i still like the romance! it has changed 2 suit modern audineces! but i sooo understand ur views and think ur making very good points :-D but dont press the thumbs down button on my comments please!!! :-(

  • There is no "right or wrong", just two opinions and yours is as valid as mine. We are discussing a fictional TV show, after all! Such a discussion is interesting only when ALL opinions are voiced.

I agree with your observation that the inclusion of romance in the new Series reflects a modern audience. It also reflects the fact that the new Series is aimed at a less mature audience. Classic Who was aimed at an audience capable of thinking above a "teen romance" level.

  • yes :-D im glad we agree that both our points r valid! but i must disagree about the whole less mature audience thing (although i once again can understand where ur coming from). Dr who is being enjoyed by both afults and kids (for both new and old who!!!)

  • Well chosen

  • I'd probably agree with half that list. And definitely the top spot. Sarah Jane is brilliant. Pity the SJA series probably won't make it to a fourth series.

  • Why not? Series 3 is only now in pre-production. And K-9 is coming back!

  • I think what he's talking about are the BBC budget cuts and it seems like children's shows like SJA are targets for the axe. Even though it is one of the highest rated children's shows, I read that they tried to cancel SJA after series 2 because of budgetary reasons and RTD had to step in and save it. I think as long as RTD keeps fighting to keep SJA on and the rating stay good, I don't see it being cancelled... but with the BBC you never really know...

  • That's what I meant. RTD said series 3 came close to cancellation three times before they managed to scrape the money together from various departments at the BBC. That might not be possible for a series four.

  • The most misused companion was Adric! He was hated by many for his limited acting skills which were greatly compounded by medicore scripts too many companions brought into the mix by a dead man walking Doctor/Baker on his way out. A equally initally jittery performance by Davidson's Doctor Whom i did grow to appreciate unfortunately he left too soon Adric could have been a great companion. The earlier Doctor's had a spontaneity to them because of the lack of editing which doesn't exist today.

  • i totally disagree with you about the sexuality content which the new series has throughout it now. it made no sense over the years that the Doctor wasn't romantically involved with his previous companions. i also love the way the current companions are not intimidated or engulfed by the Doctor's presence as were many of the previous companions. They work with the Doctor and are quite aware of his greatness and his faults which for me makes the Doctor more of well rounded character.

  • Just a quick comment... You'll notice the brigadier is not in my top 10. I'm a huge fan of the brig but I consider him more as a recurring associate of the Doctor rather then a companion. He might be a companion from a technical point of view, but he doesn't ever really serve in a traditional companion role (except in a few audios).
