One of the best renderings on Youtube, thanks a lot, modest and sharp interpretation without the theatrical voice effects of other singers.
What I'm trying to say here is that what is conveyed by these guys is a dazzling piece of harmonical symphony, not even considering the role of the orchestra. Maybe our hispanic critics are able to blow away this aspect, too. Suckeeeers!
Pronunciacion. Interpretacion.
This is very beautiful! These 2 men harmonize so well. Vargas is my favorite of the current operatic tenors, he has such a very fine voice, but of the darker hue that I prefer.
In the French style, it is not about vocal gymnastics and power. It it ALL about elegance and smoothness of tone. The French style is not appreciated like it should be neither is it done because people want to be "blown away" due to the powerful singers of the past 30 to 40 years(i.e. Pavarotti). Not knocking on these singers for they are great, but the art form is suffering because "we" want to be hit in the head with the voice.
@sngngsolo : reading that Pavarotti was a powerfull voice is probably one of the funiest thing ever on UTube!
Indeed he had a radiophonic voice (beautiful for sure). Probably you will say that Mario Lanza and Bjorling had powerfull voices too?? Mario DelMonaco has a powerfull voice for instance but definitivelly not Pavarotti!
@floztenor : I'm pleased that you find my comments "funny", especially from three year old comments that were purely my opinion and nothing else. Perhaps that length of time has a correlation with your conversational abilities or mental maturity. I hope that you continue to be entertained likewise in the future.
For a more elegant Vargas version (if that's at all possible), try the Vargas-Gerello Pearlfishers duet posted on Christmas Day. At the very least,IMO, that is the equal of the Bjoerling-Merrill version as the best of all time.
The Frenche music has to be elegant, the passion has to be at the service of the music. It's not "verismus" like the Alvarez interpratation, that sounds like Puccini style. I prefer Vargas...!
Nice but - boring. This is due mainly to the director not the singer. Although the baritone is a bit "colourless". See the same piece when sung by Alvarez and Terfel or Alagna and Terfel.
Thank you for the information. I saw the videos you suggested. Yes, they sound more "passionate", but I prefer Vargas-Tezier version for its elegance and style.
And, I don't think Tezier's voice is colourless. I heard him live the other day at Covent Garden, and he was great as Belcore.
Your video is, of course, of very high level. Sorry for being perhaps less polished. I heard Vargas live several years ago, at the beginning of his international careeer. Best wishes.
Great duet!!!

I think Vargas has a lovely timbre but compared with Pavarotti he lacks acuti or "bite in the tone", but still a lovely voice to listen to
Bjoerrelli 2 years ago
To be fair though: How can you compare ANYone to Pavarotti? The man was one-of-a-kind.

Is there a version with Alagna and Tézier? I would love to hear both of them. This, however, is one of the better interpretations Bravi signori!!!

Vargas plays his cards right and gets a few breaks, he'll be the next Pavarotti.
