... could Herb be considered an honorary member of the (in)famous Wrecking Crew group or studio musicians? Herb was clearly featured on a lot of hit songs in the '60s which also included instrumentation by Wrecking Crew members - Herb's melodic trumpet lines were very much an integral part of most of the popular songs he played on... probably a major selling point in them as well. BTW what was the TJB song playing in the background in the demo reel film w/ Terri Garr-also here on the 'Tube?
I also love the Tijuana Brass. I would go see my grandparents in Amarillo Texas, and they always played this song for me, It was my favorite! Herb Alpert and his band gave me a lifetime full of wonderful memories!
You can always tell if a trumpet player is actually playing, when he removes the horn from his lips there will be a mark (circle if you will) where the mouth peice is pressed to his lips. This happens to 90% of players. ( I know, I played trumpet for many years). Herb Alpert and the guys were my high school heros. I got a lot of dates with girls playing his music. :o)
@Skysport22 Settle down, "Drypork22". This guy wrote some o.k. songs but he wasn't that good of an arranger and he struggled when it came to playing live. Check out my band's new video of Alpert's song, "Tijuana Taxi" for a lesson on how to play this music properly. Most people say our version is even better than the originals (and they are probably right).
Uh, stubbyguy, in your attempt to come off as a trivia king, you forgot that Herb's last name is spelled "Alpert," not "Albert." I also noticed that your comment here is also copied and pasted verbatim from another video, or vice versa. As in my other reply to you, do you know who the "M" is in A & M?
@wannawetpooh66 The "M" stands for "Munch" as in "Ass Munch". Check out my band's video for this song and you'll soon understand why most people say our version of "Tijuana Taxi" is superior to the original. We updated and improved the sound.
@number1trumpet Too bad you didnt CREATE the ORIGINAL! Eh? Why not do something original on your own??? Only because todays tecnology is better did this sound like this. Live it was better!
@bluekarma@bluekarma This guy is obviously just jealous of the fact that I'm in a kick ass band. Hey "lukewarm", my advice for you is that you stop leaving messages on youtube and use that time to practice. Then maybe some day you'll be able to play as good as we do.
I fell in love with Herb Alpert and the TJB when I was around 6 years old--my mom had his tape in her car and everytime I went for a ride with her I begged that she put him on...this is happy music for me and thanks HA for sharing your talent and ty gooch for posting this wonderful video! God bless you!
The miming looks so obvious. Alpert is bad at it. But the audience in 1967 probably didn't notice. This show came on after the old folks bedtime - they stayed up until 8:00 to see Lawrence Welk. ;-)
Herb didn't like to admit that he and the Brass "mimed" their A&M recordings on variety shows AND their specials during the '60s for another reason: if Julius Wechter wasn't with the band, they couldn't recreate their "sound" live before a studio audience (who expected them to sound as they did "on record"). Dick Tufeld was not only the voice of "The Robot" AND "HOLLYWOOD PALACE"'s announcer, he was also the voice behind Quaker Oats' sponsor I.D.'s for "F TROOP" at the same time!
great music, I grew up hearing this on my parents hi fi. Looking at this closely, I don't think that Herb is really playing that trumpet. Early lip synching with the instruments? As I play the 'bone, I am closely looking at the t-bone player to see if his phrasing is posed or real... but then what can you do at least the percussion looks real. Maybe it's just herb that's not playing.
The whole song was pantomimed to the recording as was common in those days on variety shows. Julius Wechter is playing marimba on the recording. Lou Pagani synched the marimba part on TV shows where they used the recorded version. When they played live, the marimba parts were usually played by piano or guitar and sometimes eliminated because Julius was busy with the Baja Marimba Band and couldn't be part of most TJB live shows.
I bet most you didn't know that Herb Albert was the "A" in A & M Records. He is rich beyond compare and really didn't need to perform then or now. But his love for the trumpet still keeps him going. HIs is very smooth. Too bad they didn't have real Mexicans in the group. Made up mostly of Italians.
He absolutely MUST create a new video for the song Tijuana Taxi, where Isis Chacon, J-Lo, Beyonce, Jelena Jensen, and some Marilyn Monroe-look alike dance around the camera, wearing bras, but no panties, and NOTHING ELSE...
Hate to disabuse you of that notion! Go to any Salvation Army or Goodwill store and you'll find multiple copies, in various conditions, of that album.
This song wasn't on the "Whipped Cream" album, but the one that followed it. The album title was "Going Places" and it had Herb sitting in a Bi-plane being served a martini by a pretty lady lying on the wing.
This was Herb's third appearance on the "PALACE", and his first as guest host, originally telecast on October 29, 1966 {originally in color; this is the black & white kinescope film version}; this appearance paved the way for the first of his specials with the "Brass" on April 24, 1967, on CBS.
On another site, someone said that many of these TV studios actually didn't have good accomodations for "live" musical performance and that (at least with rock n roll) lip-synching was almost the rule, except for the Ed Sullivan show, which somehow DID allow for a decent "live" sound.
Ah yes...The Hollywood Palace. We were blessed with so many great variety shows back in the day. I remember watching this show with my mom and dad. Everybody is gone now,,,but the great memeories still remain.
I only wish that the nature of television could still produce show like "The Hollywood Place". ABC made a quick recovery after the failure of "The Jerry Lewis Show".

OK...so Herb introduces all of the members of the band...but one...is that Julius Wechter om Marimba??
Is his introduction eliminated, or did it not happen?
Julius, leader of the Baja Marimba Band, wrote numerous tunes for TJB including Spanish Flea.

no mics to carry over the sound to the PA, so they might just have run a tape and let him play along to it. Pity...
