This is a very good example of a band that was founded on MUSIC, not looks. I mean, you see so many bands that are already so shaped and softened up for the first album. This is something very different, straight from the forests of Finland.

"Nasal sound" is a technical error done in canto and consists of sound escaping throw the nose when exhaling.

The trademark sound in Tarja's voice resembling a cat's "purr" is made through the movementsof epiglotis and the vibration of the head bones.

Also, in 1999 her voice sounded "bottled" because she was forced to play in mezzo-soprano registre. It sounded exactly as it should have.

In fact about half of NW fans miss that mezzo, constricted sound.

But I know what you mean :-D They all look quiet stiff and very concentrated, o.k., live on TV they must have been very nervous and at these times they were not used to that whole "Rockstar circus" surrounding them. Think they still had to find their way how to handle all that sudden fame.

Imo Tarja developed further most of the band members, refering to voice and performing on stage and of course to haircut/dresses ( well, it were the 90s back than! ) ;-)

A soft dark brown would have been better. Tarja's timbre is lighter, thats true, but not only dramatic sopranos are good. Tarja is more of a Lyric soprano now, but that doesn't mean she is worse... its a question of prefering one or another timbre.

I also think if Tarja had dedicated to opera, having more academy training (instead of going into a metal career) she could have been much better. But even without that training, her attempts on La Traviata were good!
