@ryreinhardt maybe you do play guitar but its fact jimi was 1 of the best guitarist that lived, jimi was definately not just an other blues guitarist, he was a jazz and blues guitarist, well he was just what he was, you cant put jimi's music in to a catergory he was just special. tbh i dont know where you are coming from saying he needed theatrics to compensate, go listen to some hendrix before talking out of your ass because its obvious to me you havent heard much
@zaktox I worked with a guy who played his lousy friggin' crap all day long.....HE IS BORING and unsophisicated .....and a jazz player HEHEH that laughable ...he was a chitlin circuit 4 chord soul player until he went all hippie and played that noisy shit........ok I really don't care whaT YOU THINK you probably think BB king is great what ...he can't even play chords and knows one little scale he plays over and over on every song ...... GO AWAY you dope
@ryreinhardt ......you saying hendrix is boring is laughable. Not that it matters how many chords a player uses less can be more..i mean you obviously like this song and its like 2 chords, but jimi diffinately isnt a "4chord player" most of them have long chord progressions, jazz chord progressions alot of the time (wind crys marry alot of jazz techniques in that for 1 example). Yer i think bb king is ok not a massive fan i find it gets a bit boring sometimes but i dont deny hes good
@zaktox Ledbetter was a fantastic singer and songwriter - hendrix was not, that's why I like L.B .....so hendrix played a few 9ths and 6 ths ....that does NOT make him a jazz player ......hendrix just used the ole petatonic scale and not much more.
put him on stage with just an accoustic guitar and no band and people would walk out....
@ryreinhardt watch hound dog by jimi or hear my train comin. lol mate you have no idea what your talking about, why do you argue and say things like hendrix wasnt a good singer songwriter thats rediculas. Hendrix was an amazing guitarist and i feel sorry for you as a musician not being able to understand such genius, your listening skills must be extremely limited. unfortunately your never progress past playing a few chords if you continue in your mind set
@zaktox look you dopey tastless fuckwit.......get an education and listen to some great players and not that fuzzyhaired gay dressed strat basher I have heard all his fucking rubbish and I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire - fortunately he did the music world a favour and died ...that was his greatest legacy ...good bye you moron
If you want to see and hear a truly great player listen to lenny breau or any other great guitarist and you'll understand jimi was VERy VER Y VERY LIMITED ok
@ryreinhardt your the one that needs educating, i agree i like lenny breau as well, really in to wes montgomery atm. "Jimi was limited" just lol man, your the one who has limited understanding guess we agree to disagree on hendrix's greatness
I could be wrong, but I believe "rider" referred to a woman mounting a man. Look up the song Pistol Slappin' Blues by Blind Boy Fuller. The meaning of the phrase is pretty unmistakable in that song.
Lead Belly didnt sing his way out of prison, records show that he served his time in a positive manner and was let out because of it, life magizine had a racist color add trying to fill the public with what your trying to tell youtubers. thumb done douchebag
After hearing this I can tell this is definitely where hendrix got the inspiration for catfish blues, one of my favorite songs...leadbelly is so sick, I am so glad I found his music:)
you prompted me to do some research.:) Muddy did put together the song that Jimi covered but I don't think its fair to say that Muddy Waters wrote the song. The verse about swimming in the sea and having women chase after you has been used in one variation or another in several early 1900 blues songs, as you can hear in this video. Some research even suggested that Robert Petway's song called(you guessed it) "catfish blues" was Muddy Waters main influence for Rollin' Stone
lol you clearly only read 1 of my comments, read the other...i guess you could give muddy waters credit although that song has been around long before him. I've even heard muddy waters got the inspiration from robert petway
hendrix is the best at it by a mile. but i would love to hear a good version of it, if anyone could give me a link that would be amazing thanx :D, you rock lead belly
@thekingssquare thanks ! @ke1lb there are a lot morons who think Hendrix's a genius - for making shitty noisey 4 chord blues....he wouldn't get a gig in a chew and spew bar these days
@ryreinhardt haha I never said I didn't/did care what you think. I said there are plenty of morons who view their opinion as fact lol...I made no mention of what you actually said, only how you said it lol....thanks :)

@ryreinhardt How can you say that? Just because you don't like him doesn't mean his abilities weren't incredible. I'm not a big Jimi Hendrix fan but I definately respect his greatness.
you lot should shutup, just enjoy the music, if you dont enjoy dont watch the vid, spellings mistakes mean nothing here, just LISTEN and stop ruining it for the people who want to comment properly.
if youre still desperate to 'win' the argument, do it with private messages.
i want to know more about leadbelly's life, so i read the comments on videos like these so i get the facts AND the opinions. you lot aren't offering anything so PLEASE go away!
well said! I've been looking into who inspired Janis Joplin and have found this and quite alot of other blues music! Its really good to hear different music. I play guitar and sing myself but have hit a dead end lol. Perhaps when I pick up my guitar and sing the next time, it will be fresh!
ah cool, yeah i play guitar too (cant sing for my life though lol)
dead ends and blocks are always a pain, but you'll get through it soon, no doubt :-) its the people like you (that really care about music) that end up great.
Its these recordings that contain the most haunting feeling ever produced in recording history even with all that has followed in their wake. The style 1-2 track style recording has not been surpassed since.
what about certain recordings of Chopin? grow up and don't make such absolute statements. as Socrates said, the greatest wisdom is to, paradoxically, know that you know nothing.
As I said, 'recordings of Chopin', not recordings by Chopin. This song was not written by Leadbelly. Indeed many blues songs were not written by their performers. If you're trying to be clever, at least think it through first.
I'm not trying to be clever but perhaps you should: 'recordings of Chopin' is interchangeable with 'recordings by Chopin'. In fact the later - to me - implies he was the bloke hitting record on the tape machine. My admiration is of Leadbelly's performance, not the song itself, to counter that you could reference Ashkenazy but not Chopin. The original poster only mentioned the recording method specifically, so if I were to be pedantic I'd state that mentioning Chopin was moot.
sorry, ran out of space. and besides, the fact chopin died before recording technology was invented makes you 'witticism' absurd. knowledge of what the name is a signifier of, which if mentioning 'chopin' in a music forum necessitates for it to have any meaning, includes this. thus the name gives the phrase 'recordings of chopin' a meaning beyond question (or at least beyond yours). cheers.
it seems my last response wasn't posted so: two phrases with different implications are not interchangable; you meant 'latter', not 'later'; one has admiration 'for', not 'of' a thing; my point was also about performance, not only the song; to you my mentioning chopin was 'irrelevant', not 'moot'; and finally the line 'which if mentioning 'chopin' in a music forum necessitates for it to have any meaning', should have read 'is key to understanding 'chopin' in a music forum'.
Congrats on picking up the spelling mistake. Let's look at your actual statement: "what about the recordings of Chopin (playing)(captured by an engineer) ('s music played by Ashkenazy)". Do you see? Who knows what you were aiming to imply? Implications are by their very nature indefinite, no? Moot can mean 'not worthy of debate', implying irrelevant, hardly improper usage. And then you go on to correct yourself: I won't disagree, or elaborate...
ok, i'll make it even simpler. you said, 'interesting, when did chopin enter a recording studio?' it was a pointless remark as this could never have happened. thus the meaning of my remark 'what about certain recordings of chopin?' (you misquoted me above) is obvious. i made a simple remark which you willfully misinterpreted. that's it.
Foolish boy, I was trying to energise your nuance challenged mind: I can't just tell you how to think, you'll learn nothing from that. Leadbelly rocked on this recording, who do you present as direct competition to the op's assertion? I even furnished you with a pianist! You can't virulently challenge his opinion by throwing in something so woolly as "certain recordings of" a composer; not very good form at all...
how were you trying to 'energise' my mind? what's a 'nuance challenged mind', other than an example of poor grammar? you've also changed the focus of your argument(to that of no definite challenge to this particular recording (although he speaks of recordings made in this style)) to regain ground. and re: moot, just look it up and then give me a recognised definition interchangeable with 'irrelevant' or 'not worthy of debate'.
Nuance challenged is idiomatic. I don't expect you to understand everything I write (why didn't you just mention your autism straight away?). And I wasn't aware that I'd lost any ground? I don't have to look anything up - but I'm certain that if you do you'll find 'moot' can be defined as an adjective equating to irrelevant. Go ahead, try it, then - chastened by the experience - you can go back over our little debate and learn even more. No need to apologise. Good luck.
Yes I'm aware you didn't really mean that Chopin himself was playing the piano; that's precisely what made my witticism so fucking hilarious. And the fact that two people choosing to present themselves as Wungabunga and Billyshitcheese are even having a debate of this nature truly is "absurd".
god you're so simple. you were aware of it and anyone able to understand the statement would also have been aware of it. thus there was no ambiguity in my statement and it is precisely ambiguity that your remark relied upon.
