One needs only to listen to the 4 "solo" albums they put out near the end. Frehley's was miles ahead of the other 4, with Simmons' being the worst. They are now a sham and a parody.

I'm telling you Animalize and Asylum cannot, never have, and never will hold a candle to albums like Destroyer, Rock N Roll Over, Love Gun, or Dressed To Kill.

@warrant Your estimation of what a 100% "on fire" Kiss is, may not be what another fan considers 100% "on fire" Kiss. Today, many fans find Paul's vocal difficulties to be less than 100%. You're entitled to your opinion, but the truth is if you really want to see Kiss at 100%, you have to go back to the bands very earliest days when they truly were a hungry band writing songs that would become classics. Not the nostalgia/tribute act they are today with only one album of new songs in ten years.

@MrDarkShadow64 I don't disagree with you here too much. The mid-70s versions of Ace and Peter are them at their peak as musicians. Peter is full of fire when you see early footage of him. He is physically unable to play that way now. And Ace was a very inventive and tasteful player at his peak.
But it happens. The peak is the important part. Most don't have a peak worth talking about. The last few movies the Marx Brothers made were pretty bad...but their peak is why they are legends.

I really wish people would actually listen to the music rather then just say that Peter and Ace are the best. Peter realy can't play very well (at least not as well as either Eric).Ace on the other hand may not as technically sound as the others but there is something to his style. However Tommy did a great copying it for Sonic Boom.I have been a KISS fan since'76 and love them all but they are sounding better then they ever have right now. Don't get me wrong I still miss Ace.

I saw KISS on the original reunion tour and must say it didn't have the punch I thought they would have. That was down to Peter's drumming. It just lacked the rest of the music. Alive was GREAT! Fully over produced with studio over dubs but a great live album. Peter's background is more of a jazz/swing background. Eric Singer really added the power to KISS

I wish Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer, replacing Ace & Peter, would create their own makeup and characters, otherwise I am fine with both lineups of the band, having only seen the current version live, they rocked. Sometimes partnerships however fruitful they may have once been just need to dissolve. Peter and Ace were and are a huge part of KISS but Gene & Paul were always the frontmen and the only two members which the band could not survive without.

They had to make the set list accomodate Peter's skill. By the way, this is coming from the biggest Ace fan...he's the reason I got into music in the first place.

By the way just to add to my comment. I like Kiss now. Eric Singer has played with Alice Cooper. he's impresive when he performs live. Don't know to much aboout Tommy. I've gone to the shows and they've been good. But I didn't pay attention to his guitar playing so. I mainly enjoyed the show as a whole. It's alway great to see these guys.

Remember when Gene was in the back of a limo being interviewed around 1981. He was asked if Kiss will ever take off the makeup and Gene proudly stated that they never would because it would be like superman without his cape! Two years later the makeup was off. You know why Ace and Peter were great in KISS? Because Paul and Gene gave them DIRECTION- they would give them a thumbs up or a thumbs down... I love Ace's work with KISS so much, but listen to his stuff apart from KISS (his first solo lp excluded- BUT who produced it? E.K.); most of it's very mediocre, imo... and don't get me started with Peter... Ace and Pete need direction and a vehicle for their talent (i.e. a good song), and Paul and Gene did that for them.
If Kiss ever gets elected to the Rock and Roll hall, Peter and Ace better be invited by Paul and Gene. Hopefully they are still getting a cut of the profits still going out. Ace is still the guitar god of hard rock.

I watched KISSteria last week and what really upset me is that Paul said Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer were more important to the band than Ace and Peter BULLSHIT!!! If it wasn't for Ace and Peter KISS would not be where they are today... However Gene wouldn't let Eric do Beth b/c he said when Peter Criss left the band, out of respect they decided not to do Beth anymore but I believe they do now but oh well The original members is what got KISS to where they are now...
Really with the way Gene and Paul controled things no one will ever know how much input Peter (and Ace for that matter) had. Obviously even a song wortten by Paul or Gene during that time would still have input from the other members when it came time to record it. So to say he has never written al ambums worth of decent music is not fair he "co worte" several albums that went gold/platinum.
It's good seeing that Peter has somewhat forgiven Ace for siding with Paul and Gene when voting him out of the band in 1979. Kiss fell apart musically in 1978 with the solo albums and no extensive touring, but the Dynasty tour the band sounded weak, (look up the Largo 79 video here on YouTube) and Peter's drumming had deteriorated immensely.
Ace's album sounded the most like Kiss. Anton Fig copped a very Peter Criss drum style for that Ace 78 album, and he later played on Dynasty when Peter Criss was having problems. Obviously, Paul and Gene liked what they heard on Ace's album enough to use Anton on the next Kiss album. Ace's tunes with Anton, Paul and Gene sound great on Dynasty, but with a glossy production.
@waterbongcritic good point but it wasnt only Dynasty, he played on both Dynasty and Unmasked and while not given credit is technically the first replacement player Kiss had predating both Eric Carr and Vinny Vincent. Maybe if they were not trying to keep the kiss image going and had been more open Anton may have been a permanent member, I mean they did think he was good enough to use him for two whole albums.

Peter Criss is the one who placed an ad in Rolling Stone looking for musicians.
Paul and Gene saw that ad and responded. Peter must have felt they were good enough, he says he liked the songs. They became a trio and the first Kiss song they wrote was Strutter.
The trio practiced in a loft for months before they put an ad out there looking for a lead guitarist, but when they heard Ace they knew he was good. Look up the Nightbird 77 Kiss appearance here on YouTube and Paul says they weren't initially convinced about Ace, and after a second audition, the three hired Ace as lead guitarist.
GREAT interview, I love how these two have still remained friends. Gene was my favorite in the day but its interesting how these two over time have replaced both Gene and Paul as my musical hero's. I think its friendship that I welcome and invite into my life today, not all of the arrogant crap Gene replaced it with. Ace and Peter are fantastic, pure genius.
@Ringreader What happened was Peter got hooked on drugs and Ace had a $10,000 a week, (yes I said $10,000 a week) alcohol addiction. In 1979 members of KISS and the management limited him to only $2000 a week. I was and still is a big Ace fan but it might be time to call it .

I think now that KISS ought to get out of the 70's time warp, remove the makeup and get back to being the hard band they were in the mid 80's or retire.

@MRTTMT This is true. The worst KISS albums are Unmasked, Music From the Elder and Carnival of Souls, that was the first KISS CD that I returned to the store. Paul's two favourite's of mine Forever and the best of all Thrills in the Night. The best KISS song overall Detroit, Rock City.

For me, the period with Ace and Peter were the best of the band.For those who say that Tommy is better, or that Eric Carr was 100.000 (years) times better than Peter,you have to understand that the real reicarnation of KISS is the original.

Paul & Gene have occasionally been able to come up with some good stuff without Ace, the best example would be Creatures Of The Night...but without Ace it's never genuinely KISS, it's just Gene & Paul music with the KISS logo stamped on the cover. @warrant Your estimation of what a 100% "on fire" Kiss is, may not be what another fan considers 100% "on fire" Kiss. Today, many fans find Paul's vocal difficulties to be less than 100%. You're entitled to your opinion, but the truth is if you really want to see Kiss at 100%, you have to go back to the bands very earliest days when they truly were a hungry band writing songs that would become classics. Not the nostalgia/tribute act they are today with only one album of new songs in ten years.

@MrDarkShadow64 I don't disagree with you here too much. The mid-70s versions of Ace and Peter are them at their peak as musicians. Peter is full of fire when you see early footage of him. He is physically unable to play that way now. And Ace was a very inventive and tasteful player at his peak.
But it happens. The peak is the important part. Most don't have a peak worth talking about. The last few movies the Marx Brothers made were pretty bad...but their peak is why they are legends.

None of us really know what went down in the band and why things worked out the way they did. Maybe Gene nad Paul are to blame, maybe Ace and Peter are to blame who really knows?
I think in a way things worked out fine in the end, Ace and Peter both got awesome solo careers and Kiss are still pumping out some solid rock n' roll. Everyone seems happy doing what they're doing and the fans are the ones benifiting. Let's just leave the past in the past.

I really wish people would actually listen to the music rather then just say that Peter and Ace are the best. Peter realy can't play very well (at least not as well as either Eric).Ace on the other hand may not as technically sound as the others but there is something to his style. However Tommy did a great copying it for Sonic Boom.I have been a KISS fan since'76 and love them all but they are sounding better then they ever have right now. Don't get me wrong I still miss Ace.

I saw KISS on the original reunion tour and must say it didn't have the punch I thought they would have. That was down to Peter's drumming. It just lacked the rest of the music. Alive was GREAT! Fully over produced with studio over dubs but a great live album. Peter's background is more of a jazz/swing background. Eric Singer really added the power to KISS

I wish Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer, replacing Ace & Peter, would create their own makeup and characters, otherwise I am fine with both lineups of the band, having only seen the current version live, they rocked. Sometimes partnerships however fruitful they may have once been just need to dissolve. Peter and Ace were and are a huge part of KISS but Gene & Paul were always the frontmen and the only two members which the band could not survive without.

On the Farewell Tour they realized towards the end, that it was Ace & Peter they wanted to say Farewell to. Not the fans. He said, "When Ace is sober he can rock out guys ½ his age, but he’s never sober. Peter has declined. Part of that is age, which shows more on a drummer than other musicians, and part is that he’s impossible to deal with. Ace & Peter brought us back to the ugly part of the '70s.”

By the way just to add to my comment. I like Kiss now. Eric Singer has played with Alice Cooper. he's impresive when he performs live. Don't know to much aboout Tommy. I've gone to the shows and they've been good. But I didn't pay attention to his guitar playing so. I mainly enjoyed the show as a whole. It's alway great to see these guys.

Remember when Gene was in the back of a limo being interviewed around 1981. He was asked if Kiss will ever take off the makeup and Gene proudly stated that they never would because it would be like superman without his cape! Two years later the makeup was off. You know why Ace and Peter were great in KISS? Because Paul and Gene gave them DIRECTION- they would give them a thumbs up or a thumbs down... I love Ace's work with KISS so much, but listen to his stuff apart from KISS (his first solo lp excluded- BUT who produced it? E.K.); most of it's very mediocre, imo... and don't get me started with Peter... Ace and Pete need direction and a vehicle for their talent (i.e. a good song), and Paul and Gene did that for them.

Really with the way Gene and Paul controled things no one will ever know how much input Peter (and Ace for that matter) had. Obviously even a song wortten by Paul or Gene during that time would still have input from the other members when it came time to record it. So to say he has never written al ambums worth of decent music is not fair he "co worte" several albums that went gold/platinum.

It's good seeing that Peter has somewhat forgiven Ace for siding with Paul and Gene when voting him out of the band in 1979. Kiss fell apart musically in 1978 with the solo albums and no extensive touring, but the Dynasty tour the band sounded weak, (look up the Largo 79 video here on YouTube) and Peter's drumming had deteriorated immensely.

Ace's album sounded the most like Kiss. Anton Fig copped a very Peter Criss drum style for that Ace 78 album, and he later played on Dynasty when Peter Criss was having problems. Obviously, Paul and Gene liked what they heard on Ace's album enough to use Anton on the next Kiss album. Ace's tunes with Anton, Paul and Gene sound great on Dynasty, but with a glossy production.

Paul and Gene saw that ad and responded. Peter must have felt they were good enough, he says he liked the songs. They became a trio and the first Kiss song they wrote was Strutter.

The trio practiced in a loft for months before they put an ad out there looking for a lead guitarist, but when they heard Ace they knew he was good. Look up the Nightbird 77 Kiss appearance here on YouTube and Paul says they weren't initially convinced about Ace, and after a second audition, the three hired Ace as lead guitarist.

@Ringreader What happened was Peter got hooked on drugs and Ace had a $10,000 a week, (yes I said $10,000 a week) alcohol addiction. In 1979 members of KISS and the management limited him to only $2000 a week. I was and still is a big Ace fan but it might be time to call it .

@Ringreader if u're lucky u'll get 3-4 decent songs from Gene per lp-'think about it-the weakest KISS lps=have weakest Gene songs-Dynasty, 1 good Gene song-Unmasked- weak Gene songs,Crazy Nights-weak Gene songs.

@MRTTMT This is true. The worst KISS albums are Unmasked, Music From the Elder and Carnival of Souls, that was the first KISS CD that I returned to the store. Paul's two favourite's of mine Forever and the best of all Thrills in the Night. The best KISS song overall Detroit, Rock City.

@Ringreader I like every album but Unmasked- never liked it-I know some people do and that's fine=I still though with 3 badass Demon Gene songs and the producer not making Ace's songs sound so poppy-Just during theearly 80,s the best Gene songs were on other peoples albums(bands he was producing at the time)

@MRTTMT At least we concur on Unmasked. When I met Bruce Kulick before Carnival came out I told him that every KISS fan has some nit-picking and I named those three albums. He was understanding about it and appreciated my honesty. He said; 'All fans should tell the band what they like and don't like'.

@MRTTMT I was the only song that I liked on The Elder apart from A World Without Heroes though it was odd to have Gene singing a ballad like that. Paul's usually the best at that. Is this a corresponding friendship developing here, LOL?

@Ringreader... Nah, Gene has done lots of ballads; besides "A World Without Heroes," he's done "Great Expectations," "Always Near You/Nowhere to Hide," "Mr. Make Believe," "See You Tonight" and the mock-ballad "Goin' Blind."

@Gerkinstock Those are all songs to forget especially Goin' Blind and that gospel nonsense Always Near You/Nowhere to Hide. Gabbage. Only When Gene puts his mind to it do we get great tunes like Unholy. And Great Expectations was a jokey song. Ugh!

But radio stations, particularly one in Atlanta, Georgia, began playing it more than "Detroit Rock City" and it quickly became a highly-requested selection. Kiss and Casablanca Records reissued "Beth" as an A-side with "Detroit Rock City" as the B-side, and it was far more successful.The single went Gold in the United States (the first Kiss single to do so) on January 5, 1977 and in Canada on December 1, 1976

@stud007ful different drumming styles peter is a jazz drummer and eric was a heavy rock drummer, i believe eric carr was their best drummer but to say peter is nowhere the talent eric was is harsh because two different kinds of drummers

For me, the period with Ace and Peter were the best of the band.For those who say that Tommy is better, or that Eric Carr was 100.000 (years) times better than Peter,you have to understand that the real reicarnation of KISS is the original.
But,in other hand,Peter and Ace were too much into drugs and booze,and if they stayed,the band would just not be the same.
P.S: I LOVE YOU SOO MUCH ACE FREHLEY

Paul & Gene have occasionally been able to come up with some good stuff without Ace, the best example would be Creatures Of The Night...but without Ace it's never genuinely KISS, it's just Gene & Paul music with the KISS logo stamped on the cover. Ace will always be the heart & soul of the true KISS sound, people who don't understand that don't understand KISS music...even Bruce has talked about this before.

@skullvomit666 The heart of Kiss music is Pauls voice & Gene & Pauls songwriting, guitar doesnt make a band. The voice & songs do PERIOD. Love Ace & Peter, but Kiss musically is tons better today & always were without Ace & Peter.
