你今年几岁了? can only be asked if you are talking to a kid, younger then 10 or so. 几 is "how much?" but it when you ask with this question you expect a number 10 or less, like 你学过几门外语? which means "How many foreign languages have you learned so far?", normally a person speaks 2 or 3 or so but not more than 10.
(2) If you expect that the response is more than 10 you should ask 多少 "how many (more than 10 normally), like 你们学校有多少学生? “How many pupils/students are at your school? (because you expect a number higher, a lot higher than 10, of course).
Now imagine what happened if you asked an old man: 你今年几岁了? He would feel insulted or at least laugh at you because of your incorrect Chinese, because you take him for a kid!
(3) The moral of this video: being Chinese does not automatically qualify you to be a Chinese teacher. If you have no proper qualification, don't make videos teaching stupid things to foreigners.
您多大了? is just another way of asking the age. It literally means "how big are you?"
你今年几岁了? means "how many years old are you this year?".
Most people simply ask 你几岁了?, which means "how many years old are you?"
If you were to literally translate "how old are you" it would be 你多老了?However, nobody would ask for age this way because it sounds rude, as in you are implying the person is very old.
my son alway straight A in his english class, and he is getting the 2nd language in his school is French , he like to learnt Spanish , because it's useful for the job in future in US, but he still keeping the mandarin because he dream of become a successful man in the world
the way you teaching and explaining are very clearly and understand easy
Thank you so much for your Mandarin class online free
we are Vietnamese, living in California, we have travelled yearly to many countries
@mbtheja This is the Chinese way of saying "How old are you?". In Chinese you can either say "How old are you?" as 你几岁了? or 你今年几岁了。 Both are correct sentences with grammar applied.
Thanks for your question. If you want to just say "How old are you?", you can say 你几岁了。
@mbtheja i'm studying chinese and they always tell you never to directly translate. also he teach's the meaning of every single character not the character's combined
@mbtheja Hi, Thanks for your request. Recently I have stop making more sentences in youtube, because I have created a relationship oriented Chinese course on my website. Please feel free to have a look at my website for more information. Cheers!
@jinfenguk hi! I think 你多大了 can also be used for children as well. it is ok to ask adults 你几岁了,but probably not 你多大了, especially to senior people. hope that helps. Cheers!
@JariGUl ^_^ Thanks a lot! I am currently only reloading videos. Cause I had made a major contribution on my website. Please check out my website, chineselearnlessons (dot) com for more information! Cheers!
@durt1000 Hi, not really, because "ma" is only used for "yes/no" questions. Like "Do you speak Chinese" = 你说中文吗?(ni3 shuo1 zhong1 wen2 ma), for a question like this one, you can use 呢 at the end if you want to, which is 你今年几岁了呢?(ni3 jin1 nian2 ji3 sui4 le ne1). 呢 is used for a question that requires a specific answer.
了is not used for representing a question, but something already completed, and therefore not to be deleted.

'how old are you?' No one says 'how old are you this year' or 'how old are you next year?'
so essentially the sentence's wrong,or not in use. Please correct, just give chinese translation for 'how old are you?' Thanks in advance.

问孩子才用这个。
问成年人都说多大了或是贵庚了。
老人得用 高寿了
c3r4e3a1t5 1 year ago
@c3r4e3a1t5 我觉得说多大了感觉也是对小孩子说的。。。
对,不同年龄的用法不同。。。不过教的时候先教基础的。。。
要用到“贵庚”或者“高寿”,都已经不是初级汉语的范围了。
