  • tscho sang dong.

  • 您 多 大 了?

In my Mandarin course, this is how you say 'how old are you'. Why is it different on here?

  • @steevyp

    (1) Because this video is junk, sorry.

你今年几岁了? can only be asked if you are talking to a kid, younger then 10 or so. 几 is "how much?" but it when you ask with this question you expect a number 10 or less, like 你学过几门外语? which means "How many foreign languages have you learned so far?", normally a person speaks 2 or 3 or so but not more than 10.

  • @acsodalatosmandarin Wow, i didnt know that. Thanks for the info.

  • 您多大了? is just another way of asking the age. It literally means "how big are you?"

你今年几岁了? means "how many years old are you this year?".

Most people simply ask 你几岁了?, which means "how many years old are you?"

If you were to literally translate "how old are you" it would be 你多老了?However, nobody would ask for age this way because it sounds rude, as in you are implying the person is very old.

  • dear sir, thanks so much for your explanation. You took all the pains to reply.Keep up the good work.Xie xie

  • 'how old are you?' No one says 'how old are you this year' or 'how old are you next year?'

so essentially the sentence's wrong,or not in use. Please correct, just give chinese translation for 'how old are you?' Thanks in advance.

  • @mbtheja This is the Chinese way of saying "How old are you?". In Chinese you can either say "How old are you?" as 你几岁了? or 你今年几岁了。 Both are correct sentences with grammar applied.

Thanks for your question. If you want to just say "How old are you?", you can say 你几岁了。

    Cheers.

  • @mbtheja 你多大了 also mean how old are you

  • @mbtheja i'm studying chinese and they always tell you never to directly translate. also he teach's the meaning of every single character not the character's combined

and sorry for reply to an 1 year old comment. lol

  • good,keep it up,teach us more,thanks so much

  • @mbtheja Thank you :)

  • 问孩子才用这个。

    问成年人都说多大了或是贵庚了。

    老人得用 高寿了

  • @c3r4e3a1t5 我觉得说多大了感觉也是对小孩子说的。。。

    对,不同年龄的用法不同。。。不过教的时候先教基础的。。。

    要用到“贵庚”或者“高寿”,都已经不是初级汉语的范围了。

  • 几岁了? isn't it mainly used for asking children their age ? For adults more usually 你多大了。。。。。。

  • @jinfenguk hi! I think 你多大了 can also be used for children as well. it is ok to ask adults 你几岁了,but probably not 你多大了, especially to senior people. hope that helps. Cheers!

  • Happy new year year Chineselearn, God Bless you!

  • @TheCuppycakedelight5 :D happy new year!

  • Awsome.Happy new year! :-)

  • @11Brunette11 ^_^ happy new year too you too!

  • Could we use ma instead of le?

  • A Chinese would understand it, still it´s unusual.

  • @durt1000 Hi, not really, because "ma" is only used for "yes/no" questions. Like "Do you speak Chinese" = 你说中文吗?(ni3 shuo1 zhong1 wen2 ma), for a question like this one, you can use 呢 at the end if you want to, which is 你今年几岁了呢?(ni3 jin1 nian2 ji3 sui4 le ne1). 呢 is used for a question that requires a specific answer.

了is not used for representing a question, but something already completed, and therefore not to be deleted.

    Hope that helps. Cheers!

  • best lessons on the web

    happy new year

  • ^_^ thank you very much!!

Happy new year too you too!!!
