  • Very nice guy. Smart too!

  • I appreciate the clips on Satch. Kinda helps me to get to know him. Seems like a pretty down to earth kinda guy. Does a good job explaining.

  • Make sure you pay close attention to the part after he states that he walked away from the methodical approach. He clearly states that he spent years developing scales and tecyhnique so as he puts it, it's easy to say that he walked away from all that. What he's saying, I feel, is that you need to learn the methodology and learn it well, then learn to break the rules.

  • @Maestrp37388 That's a perfect way of putting it, man. Thanks for that input! It's definitely encouraging to me as a player who's been doing rhythm for 12 years, and just now breaking into a book to learn scales and develop dexterity.

  • @Sunderlanding

    @YoLplsBest

Your entitled to your own opinions on guitar players, but @marceluuuuuu is right everyone has different tastes so there's no competition. Guitarists who play fast are people who just want to master everything within the craft of playing the instrument like bending, legato, alternate picking, arpeggio runs, slides, vibrato etc. So just enjoy the music that pleases you most.

  • Give us the Birdie Song Joe!

  • i cant do theory for 12 minutes let alone 12 hours

  • Wow he plays that AND talks about it at the same time? the master satch never fails to blow my mind

  • Opinions are not absolut truth

  • two minutes into the video and just talking no playing? i skipped this sorry.

  • 2:43

    *jaw on the ground*

  • What a tone!!!

  • If you want to hear one of Joe's greatest solo's, check out the short piece 'Into the Light'. It's a legato man's heaven.

  • Nice lesson-OPEN YOUR MIND!

  • OMG he sounds just like slash -when he speaks-

  • @herochuck1

Thats what happens when you spend too much time in Cali ;)

  • @herochuck1 ya....only he plays a ton better.

  • @Kashmir70 Nah. Slash is better. Sach never wrote anything worth remembering. All his songs sound like a "Guitarists guide on how to such and such" and not real music.

  • @Sunderlanding nope.

  • @BenCoteMusic Yes.

  • @Sunderlanding That's stupid. You're stupid. Stop being so stupid, stupid.

  • @Understanding Oh my. How brilliant, however will I live with myself, having been so utterly burned by your biting wit.

  • @thisismynamehahaha Funny, that's exactly what I was thinking after reading your first reply. I guess I left that last one because I thought it was fitting.

  • @Sunderlanding Writing and playing music is very different. Maybe Slash can wrote better songs but if you know anything about guitar playing you can clearly see that Satch is better.

  • @YoLpIsBest He's more technical yes, but who cares? Technique is only good if you use it to make bad ass music like Slash does. I'd rather listen to an awesome song with a good guitarist then a borinig song with a fast guitarist.

  • @Sunderlanding

Satch can play everything, Slash plays E pentatonic.

  • @YoLpIsBest Oh the ignorance is great. People who don't know shit trying to make fun of someone. First off there is nothing wrong with E min pentatonic (or any pentatonic). Playing it doesn't make you less of player. Secondly he used a lot of other scales. Dorian, Aeolian, Phrygian, Harmonic Minor, Major Pentatonic, Mixolydian. Thirdly, who cares if Satch can play it. Anyone can play it once it's been done. Lot's of people can play like Satch, does that make him irrelevant?

  • @Sunderlanding

Well, then lots of people can play like Slash too. Why I'm feeling that you're a Slash fanboy? :)

  • @YoLpIsBest Exactly, so the technical thing doesn't really matter, because neither one is that advanced that there aren't thousands of players who can emulate them, so you have to look at musicianship. Slash has recorded more classic solos and written more classic riffs, and had a bigger influence on the music community. That makes him the better musician.

  • @Sunderlanding

Because one can measure the "goodness" of beeing a musician

On the level of Satch and Slash, it comes down to taste not who is better. It was two years ago that i came in contact with Joe's music. I was so blown away from his Summer Song that i went to the next guitar shop and bought my basic equipment. No guitar player ever was able to inspire me the way joe did . So to me, Satch is far superior when it comes down to song writing than slash. But that is a matter of taste ;)

  • @Sunderlanding smoke another one retard..

  • He sounds like Slash

  • @felderfan1 are you drunk......slash is bullshit. dont compare

  • @demonioemmanuel

I meant voice wise man.... Playing satriani blows slash out of the water There is no comparision.

  • @felderfan1 bro!! do you mean he sounds like slash??when his talking??/ YEs you're right,,, ,,,the others misunderstood you :urrrghh!!

  • @thejsblue3

    Thank you!

  • the Man!

he uses techniques like spices. he has to moderate himself and decide when to pump up. he is just driving.

    not of this heart..

  • He says he never wants to sound the same, like he's practicing but yet all his albums sound the same.....zzzzzzzz

  • Joe is the master PERIOD end of story

  • only a real master says 'I am not thinking : watch what I can do'

  • Every Joe Satriani Song is a fuckin' WORK OF ART! It's the most technical scales and skills melt into beautiful Melodies, SATCH TOTALLY RULES THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE!

  • @rakyaband ..... What about Paul Gilbert?? Also a genius in my book!!

  • What I'd give to have 5 lessons with Joe.

  • wingardiuuum levioooosaaahhhhh

  • Kirk and satch must be laughing at you bunch of sad...sad bastards...

    Let the man play boys!

    Let the man play..

  • no, he doesnt look like voldemort, voldemort looks like him

  • This is all well and good but he doesnt give any tips on how to play fast

  • virtuoso juice 2:42

  • I love this man

  • I would pay anything to have this guy as a teacher.... By far one of the best guitar players alive....

  • Look at that....he only plays Hammer ons, Pull offs, and Legatos.... On......Every.....single......song.......!!!! aaaagggghhhhhhh

  • meh....lazy playing

    no intensity.

These are some virtuosos: Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Jeff Loomis (who admitted has to thank Becker and Friedman immensely for his abilities).

  • @jossy2112 omg..... just because u cn alternate pick or economize pick doesn mean tht ur an intense player hahahah what am i wasting my time replying this for no point talking to a person who will never comprehend music

  • @jockerj I'm sorry but I comprehend more than you do about music, Joe Satriani fanboy.

I like Joe Satriani (on a couple of albums. The Extremist and Surfing With The Alien for example, and I have all of them). And I'm sorry, but his legatos annoy me. His playing is dull, boring....Kirk Hammett has easier to play solos, but on for example ride the Lightning....THOSE are melodies. I cant believe I'm cheering for Hammett and in a J.S. vid.

If you're wasting you time...WHY THE FUCK TO YOU REPLY???

  • @jossy2112 kirk didnt even write all of ride the lightning and didnt he teach kirk?

  • @jaymzosborne111 Kirk didn't write any of the songs but he did write his own solos. And i was mentioning here about his solos, which i find very melodic, especially on RTL.

And yeah, Satriani did teach Kirk a few techniques, which is the reason I was mentioning Kirk in this thread...

  • @jossy2112 Right, so why dont you go watch the kirk hammet live improv, and then a video of satch, and see if kirk doesnt make his marshall/messa boogie stack sound like pure horse shit

  • @jossy2112

oh, and it was actually dave mustaine that wrote the ride the lightning solo. there are bootlegs of the ride the lightning solo being played (the entire song, actually) before kirk joined the band.

  • @jossy2112 these are the real players, joe and petrucci get on here and they dont show off because they dont need to, and they explain everything perfectly

  • @jossy2112 thts y i said i was wastiny my time replying to you hahaha well if u didn like joe satchs playing y the hell did u fucking wtch the vid in the first place goddamn troll . i seriousrly respect every1 opinion and i understand tht every has different taste in music so y the hell r u trolling on js fanboys videos ??? go support hammet in his other vids dun troll here and start mouthing off ppl who appreciate a virtuoso like j.s just so u noe hammet happens to be a student of js anyway

  • @jockerj You troll, go read the other posts before mouthing stupidity. I ALREADY MENTIONED HE WAS A STUDENT OF JS. It doesn’t matter if you’re a student of a virtuoso but you still play better melodies, does it?? I don’t even care for Hammett. I just mentioned that EVEN HIS melodies are better. Typical moron fanboy who reply defensively about their little idols. Again!! Satriani IS better than Hammett, as he is widely, a virtuoso but his playing and technique are fucking DULL. Idiot little boy!

  • @jossy2112 Lets see you play the guitar.I'm sure you're not even a third of what satriani is on the guitar. So why don't you shut up!!!

  • @Puertorico2494 So should I play as good as him before I can judge some video on its boringness and dullness? I am definitely not as good as him, yet too bad he remains a dull player.

  • @jossy2112

ever heard of the pitch axis theory? who's playing and technique is dull again? kirk doesn't have the slightest amount of technique, and hardly ever plays any good melodies. joe is a master of powerful melodies and complicated theory and techniques. once again, look up the pitch axis theory, it proves my point.

  • @GoodMetalFTW old kirk is good new kirk is pretty poo! Justice for all solos, are outstanding

  • @jemjoesatch

i never said he never did anything good, i just said that most of the stuff he has done isn't that great, especially compared to joe satriani.

  • 12 hours a day...im never gonna be as good as him!!! *tear*

  • I find I play best when I don't worry about theory, scales, etc. Even though I believe you must learn to expand your repertoire as not to become boring.I think Joe mixes soul with technique as well as anyone except maybe Steve Vai who I greatly admire. Theory is great if you can make it work for you. I think you practice a lot of different things ,like he says, so you can call on what you want ,when you want.

  • 12 hrs a day fuck ...

  • Satriani is the man!!!

  • He taught Kirk Hammett but Kirk didn't improve lol

  • @NixxerJixxerWixxer its pretty evident that it would be impossible to imrove on a subject where one has no skill. kirk needs to learn how to play guitar before he can start improving on it

  • @Ozznize i disagree because i think he can play good, he just cant write anything good or probably hear anything good, which is why his metallica solos sound like that and why he uses so much wah but he can still play good, just no music or feel

  • @6Metal6God69 he did write the riff for sandman......

  • @NixxerJixxerWixxer Someone jealous lol

  • @NixxerJixxerWixxer do you think kirk got his vibrato from joe? haha..

  • @NixxerJixxerWixxer Big words... If you compare solos from Kill em All and Ride the Lightning you can hear that he improved a lot.

  • @NixxerJixxerWixxer

He did, he just lost it around 2001-2002.

He was still freaking great throughout the '90s and up to 2000 if I have to be honest.

Indeed, after that, he didn't play so well anymore.

  • @NixxerJixxerWixxer Kirk actually left the Satch lessons as one of the most original and terrifying lead players on the thrash scene. his blistering ultra emotional lead breaks on Blackened, Battery, Shortest Straw, Fade to Black and Call of Kthulu were nothing short of genius. wah drenched legato runs, tapping, space age noises, double stops, and hints of be-bop, jazz phrasing as well as Hendrix style psychedelia made him perfect for the dissonant and atonal Heltfield.

    Bob Rock ruined him.

  • @loknloll How did Bob Rock ruin him?

  • @megaluisdeth are you kidding? bob rock ruined kirk hammett by convincing him to slow down, adopt a 'bluesy' feel, and he basically tried to turn kirk into Santana. screw the legato, the ultra sonic stylings of metallica's heyday and a huge part of their signature - but he had change, because he'd already convinced james to 'sing' and play slower and shorter riffs (because the ones on Justice were too complex for our retarded brains), and he forced lars to play like phil rudd of acdc. you dig?

  • @loknloll Yeah I get you now. Too bad Kirk didn't think for himself. Alex Skolnick took lessons from Satch too. Alex has ripping solos.

  • @loknloll Kirk also took lessons from Yngwie Malmsteen...you can notice his influence on the Ride the Lightning album and somewhat on Master of Puppets.

  • this guitar... looks like a soap with an arm rsrsrrs

  • fingertip not fingerpad? then my technique is all wrong then.

  • I really like to thought in his teachings too bad theres only few videos where hes teaching...

  • lord voldemort dont have shit on satch

  • @Megadethmegadethfan1 true dat bro!

  • @Megadethmegadethfan1 dude satch IS lord voldemort

  • "created with"...what?

  • Its the other way around, Voldemort looks like the Satch!

  • Steve vai was his student !, nuff said !!

  • @ace41r Whats funny is steve vai got bigger... and in my opionion hes better

  • I heard he taught Kirk Hammett a few things in the past. Great guitarist, Satch is god.

  • i like when he was demonstrating open string legato later in the video

  • its hard to imagine a man so great like Satriani exists out side of some kind of folk lore

  • probably regular sized dimarzio strings

  • what string gauge does satch use?

  • @ermonski d addario .9 exl120

  • @ermonski he uses 9 gauge d'addario strings

  • how can he play and talk at the same time at 5:54??????????

  • @bchitnis2610 we're witnessing a master at work..

  • Joe's teaching technique is amazing. He's been doing it for years and knows just how to describe ideas. Even in this lesson he has things for both beginners and experienced guitarists alike to pick up on. BUT, my left hand is tired of guitar shredding for now. Off to my piano.

  • joe satriani= God=Vin Diesel+voldermort+God

  • when he has the glasses on he looks like midget rat version of VIN DIESEL

  • Great video, thanks! Joe's the Man. Last saw him with Chickenfoot at the Greek Theater, Berkeley, Ca. When he steps up and on it, it's serious business. Love that he lays his stuff out so openly for others to learn from. His love for music is a magnet for music everywhere. Thanks again!

  • i like the way he plays massively complicated phrases with the easiest of effort and then when he is explaining how to do it technically the stuff he plays is incredibly simplified. lol

  • Satriani is such a great teacher. He explains what he does so easily.

  • @ilabstudios Well he taught steve vai. SO he must be good.

  • ...smart...

    nothing new, but smart...

  • looks like billy howerdel

  • looks like lord voldemort xD

  • he looks more like the turtle guy in master of disguise.

  • Comment removed

  • @thehiatusprt he was actually offered the job to act as voldemort. the reason was because the makeup wouldnt have taken long. it didnt happen though because joe was asking a paycheck that was a bit too high for the films budget. you can check the story if it seems too unreal xD

  • @thehiatusprt Then Voldemort should kill Harry Potter :p

  • @thehiatusprt Joe Satriani does not look like Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemort looks like Joe Satriani.

  • @malcolmx919 no no no, in SOVIET RUSSIA, lord voldemort looks like joe satriani

  • @GatesRoolz Actually Voldemort looks like Joe Satriani.

    Anywhere.

  • @thehiatusprt

    Hahaha

  • @thehiatusprt no, voldemort looks like satch :)

  • God his neck pickup sounds muddy in the low e

  • he looks like turtle

  • my lagado and pull offs in particular sound really bad. they just get quieter and notes go from being quiet to loud to quiet and just sounds inconsistent

did or does anyone else have this frustrating problem and how did you solve it?

  • play slower, try to emphasize the pull-offs and hammer-ons ... you'll develope strenght ... also, using a compressor will help but I think it's better to be able to do without any ...

  • its either your amp or your guitar... it could even be the pick-ups....

  • yes, work it with a metronome.

  • did you mean legato? Practice slowly, speed will eventually come after you can do it with ease on slow tempo. What gauge of string are you using? it also could be the height of your string, the higher your string, the harder to play legato.

  • thanks for replying

yeah my spelling sucks but im starting to get the hang of basic legato now iv just got a new guitar and the guy i brought it off had 9gauge strings on it they feel alot better for lead thanks for replying anyway :)

  • amazing!

  • His tone is what I want...sooooo smooth!

  • you know, hearing him talk about freeform expression after years of mastering all styles reminds me of another master of his art... Bruce Lee. To master all forms and eventually become formless.

  • Yes sure, without discipline and imagination, yes. With both no.

  • haha what a coincidence i was just watching enter the dragon yesterday

    what a badass

  • One word: amazing.

  • yup

  • you're the REAL guitar hero

  • oh my God...

  • ROCK ON

  • Satch is the open string fucking master!!!!!!!!!!

  • thanks for the upload.i cannot play very well but i always thought that there must be a technique to playing fast as well as lots of practice, and mr satriani has explained it ,economy of motion and lightness of touch and as little tension in the hand as poss.i think that was what he was saying.but by thors hammer it will take a lot of work for me to start to do that.better start practicing

  • awesome!

  • Joe Satriani is pure virtuoso
