After the Japan thing it's not a good idea to buy a Geiger Counter on eBay. They are going nuts with the prices. I think the best thing you can get for you money at the moment is the Gamma Scout. The russian cheap ones are to expensive now. I bought my DRSB-01 from "annakozub" on eBay. His price is under $100 but over the one i payed (around $30).
Alpha radiation can't even penetrate a sheet of paper, beta penetrates paper and the first layers of skin (not all to the flesh) and gamma penetrates paper, skin, flesh, bone and even steel but not lead.
@the5332 Actually, steel would not be a good choice to stop gamma radiation. Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon, both not very dense. Lead, bismuth and depleted uranium are very very dense, and they are widely used to stop gamma radiation.
Gamma can only be stopped by several meters of concrete.
Beta is stopped using a sheet of metal (e.g. aluminum foil)
Alpha is stopped by anything, including air (long distances), paper...
But gamma is not the most abundant : radioactive sources often emit quite a lot of alpha particles, which are less dangerous since they are stopped by paper. Though, if inhaled, alpha sources are very dangerous.
When i use a bigger screw it would crack the winding in half. So i think gloe is the best solution. Like a epoxy repair modeling material. With tghis stuff you can even rebuild broken parts.
I think at some DRSB-01 the Nosi is much louder. There is a Video on Youtube where you can clearly hear it very loud. In this case i would spray some plastic spray in it. Have you ever had problems in Stores using a geiger counter? I never had , but i heard of people kicked out.
I would recommend it above the DRSB-88 i'ts the perfect portable geiger counter for going shopping. But i think when you have the Radex you didn't realy need another portable one. But when you are into collecting geiger counter it's a musthave.

@Xerxes1688 gamma is stopped by thick layers of metal including lead and steel, though lead is much more efficient.

Gamma is worse beta doesn't penetrate the skin only gamma

Gamma

Gamma, because it usually is more energetic.
Gamma can only be stopped by several meters of concrete.

try using a bigger screw

Yes that should work. Or glue to repair the winding. But at the moment the tape does it's job ;-)

I have two of them, one plain black and the other with the stripe...as you described. In both of them, I can hear the high-pitched whine.
Overall, I agree with you, it's a great pocket-sized geiger counter great for taking into stores and prospecting for antiques, etc.
