  • i LUV Jessica Rabbit, no matter how she is portrayed

  • Cartoons are still in the formula set historically by male cartoonists ie a wide range of male characters that are considered interesting, with only two types of females- 'sexy' or 'cute'. I don't blame men for this, we just need to balance it with more cartoons from other perspectives that include variety of non-sexualised female characters. We are human beings after all & also have a wide range of characteristics that have nothing to do with 'sexiness' or 'cuteness' but are interesting & funny

  • Oh c'mon. Look at men at cartoons - stupid, lazy, evil and so on and so on. You can find anything in them. BTW, did you see ratatouille? How did you like Colete? Still not good enough?

  • I think it's because men make things like this for men, and women let them. Mothers are surely the most likely to buy Disney movies for their male or female children. It's female subjugation- the women accept it and make excuses for it, while the men just sit and enjoy it.

  • I get the impression that the media is not doing anything but using a stereotype to express something. Without the recognition from the audience, it wouldn't serve any purpose.

  • well those were the olden days have u seen kim possible or animes in the east, to some extent it is there but not much now

  • feminits resent that men are sexually attracted to real women and not to their lesbian dyke asses

feminits see men as ciphers and bondsmen

those men that that sign the marriage contract with a wimyn can expect to be treated as a bondsman backed by the full force of the misandric feminit laws

the Family Court imposesand peonage instalments on men alimony maintenance educational expenses for kids alienated by a spiteful ex wife feminit wimyn are better stayed well clear of

    by young men

  • Sex sells. Some women ARE this way and choose to be portrayed as such. Cartoons have been torn apart completely as is, why make it worse? And might I add, a number of the women you have in here are actually quite intelligent. It's the men who are viewing them as blatant sex objects. There's nothing wrong with being attractive. Cartoons are going to become so over-censored, I'll just not want anything to do with them and I draw for a living.

  • But mostly: very badly animated...

Seriously, what the f*ck was with Betty Boop?! O_o

  • jesicca rabbit is sooooo ugly xD

  • While there is a valid point to be made here, this is not a fair, accurate, or responsible way to make it. You've taken some good examples, but then you've spliced in many bad ones.

Several clips are run back and forth in an awkward way to appear more sexually suggestive.

BoPeep from Toy Story is just a toy- is it the writer's fault that girls are given frilly dolls to play with?

A few shots are of male characters in drag.

    The list goes on...

And the soundtrack is laying it on a bit thick, no?

  • fucking stupid.

  • Though, I think you may have misrepresented Barbie. When it comes to looks, she's definitely the anti-feminist icon, but the 3D movies were actually some of the most feminist little girls' movies I had ever seen in a long time, no lie, when it came to the roles played by women and their unique personalities. ^^;

  • Distortion of how things ought to be, doesn't require cartoons as a guide. it is in us all, by nature of the flesh, to distort. If we are going to look at the Correct "view of women" then there must be rules, laws and guidelines to do so. But, who's rules, laws and guidelines? Who is incorruptable and flawless in Judgement? Who are we to think like and act like, so Men and women can be equal? Jesus.

  • great funky tune - what is this pls? thx

    and funny vid!!!

  • I agree with you. But I think things are changing for the better in modern cartoons, for instance, Avatar the last airbender, where women are neither sexualised nor in distress of any kind. In fact, they are often as bad assed as their male counterparts. I am finding it hard to name other cartoons, though. (I think you've misrepresented Nala; she was cool.)

  • True, true!

Avatar rocks in general, but yes. x3

  • We arn't portrayed well at all.. =(

Not to mention that men are also very masculine. I think we need to get realistic as far as cartoons go.

  • Something about the phrase "we need to get realistic as far as cartoons go" just doesn't sit right with me.

    :/

  • Cartoons are as realistic or stylised as the artist wishes them to be. However, the fact women are portrayed as big doe eyed and constantly curvaceous has its effects on women of all ages watching it. It just tends to set unachievable standards and low self esteem.

  • Gentlemen:

    The Barbie Doll.

    Discuss.

  • This is why they won't let women in the animation industry. If a woman was in charge of cartoons, she would have huge chest.. a moderate chest with smart ideas.. Animation is male dominated!! Down with Oppression!!

  • This is not a well thought out or well put together video, matter of fact you fabricate the meanings of each cartoon by splicing them together. You are a moron congrads

  • Betty Boop got some thick thighs.

  • these old cartoons were mainly drawn by MEN. all this shows is how men percieve women. not actually how most are.

  • These recordings also put men in a bad light as well in the cartoons, as if they are all pigs or something.

  • because they are, you stupi ass

  • Women, on my dick, or in the kitchen.

But seriously folks, I love it how people jump on the "women are soooo subjugated/objectified..." bandwagon. Guess what? Cartoons are designed to entertain. They are not designed to teach life lessons. Teaching kids and society that women are real people and don't have to look/act a certain way is a responsibility left to parents. It's people with this kind of "look what our children are being taught" position that has reduced cartoons in america to shit.

  • Aside from the first part (rather pointless) I agree with you.

  • You could have kept the whole, 'Women, on my dick, or in the kitchen.'

    That was really uncalled for.

  • While I understand that cartoons are meant to entertain and shouldn't always be realistic, it would seem that there is only one type of female cartoon character that has that ability to "entertain".

And while parents should be responsible for educating their children, it's nearly impossible for children to dismiss or ignore a message that is coming from most forms of entertainment and advertising, nearly everywhere they go.

I understand "sometimes" but does it have to be "always?"

  • Attractive women? I find this very offensive! Will someone please think of the children!

  • Cinderella* attractive*

  • I'm kinda between opinions on that. I mean, thats just old fashioned romantasism and sex symbols. Jessica, well that was basically what she was drawn for was visual appeal as stated in the movie but at least she was a smart girl with an attractiver personality. Holli Would and others are given a twist to that stereo typed look. Snow white and Conderella, I understand. But again, the fairy tale romantasism. Most I can say is it does produce a certain expectation for female appearances.

  • Great!!!!!!!!!

  • i don't understand your problem

your right in SOME cartoons females are objectified but there are few moments when that is happening and in most cartoons this is NOT hapening at all (like animaniacs and tiny toons)

and jet annother thing in the video i see pocahontas standing up.. is she objectified???

and jesica rebit is danceing in a night club.. is that objectified???

  • Jessica Rabbit is being used as a sexual object.Pocahontas is a 'Damsel" as though in need of saving.Animaniacs and Tiny Toons over-sex women.

  • hey great video

i'm doing a project about feminism for history class

i regonize the betty boop and bugs bunny cartoons but can someone tell me what some of the others are?

  • You guys should watch "Mulan". Great animation movie about a warrior woman in China.

  • Great video!

  • love the music

  • That Betty has got sooo bitch moments!

    The Disney cartoons are awesome.

  • HAHA!!! TRUE!!!

  • In the video women are objectified and men are made to looks stupid/mesmerized.

  • Very interesting video. I have to do a presentation on 'Gender, Feminism and Masculinities' in the media to do, and this was a useful video. I also liked the editing. Good work!

  • ???

HAHAHA THIS MADE ME REMEBER MBC2

  • I'll never understand why some guy's love Betty Boop.

  • me neither...

  • Why not a cartoon about Angela Davis?

She is a great American woman, with a degree

in philosophy..well, I think it would be funny, with her hair and all..

  • You include a Barbie straight-to-video movie yet ignore most of Pixar's movies, many of which had female protagonists. Not to mention ALL of Asian and European animation has been ignored. And then you have the unmitigated gall to call this video educational? In what possible way did you teach anything with this video?

  • I was expecting something like the "Women in Art" video a few months ago. I'm dissapointed. This movie does no justice to its subject matter. Its obviously biased, has no sense of context or chronology, and its haphazardly edited. Picks and chooses clips that prove the authors point, and ignores exceptions to the rule, particularly on the contemporary side.

  • I noticed that you used Little Bo Peep from Toy Story, but not Jessie, the Yodeling Cowgirl from Toy Story 2. She had a much bigger part and was arguably much more powerful.

It's not just cartoons, Much of modern western literature has women playing side roles, and yes, it's a shite situation.

  • Ironically, it was the men who designed the women to look the way they did in cartoons. =/

  • All cartoons are, to an extent, caricatures. Caricatures are filtered through the artist's perceptions. Yes, most cartoons were animated by men. Therefore, attractive women in cartoons reflect the contemporary societies standard of what is beautiful. Thats why Betty Boop is short, pale, with a roundish face and Pocahontas (a terrible movie imo) is tall, angluar, and muscle toned like contemporary fitness models.

  • more commentary would have been nice.

  • theres nothing wrong with how women are portrayed in cartoons.

  • that clip of sleeping beauty look's sooo wrong

  • Oh come on. Women who are beautiful love that power they have. It's usually ugly women who bitch about how "women degrade themselves".

Fact of life. Women make themselves attractive to men in order to gain control over the (historically)dominant gender.

Argue against me. I bet the person that made this clip is an ugly female.

Bet you fifty bucks, for real.

  • ha ha i bet you are right! and im a girl!

  • actually... i'm an ugly male.

  • oops... XD

  • wow... that's a fact of life I didn't notice until now... LMAO!!!

actually, I like the dominant femme... no, not that kind... ¬_¬

  • they're not bad- they're just drawn that way.

  • Great vid!! Loved it.

  • I never know Aladdin and Woody from Toy Story were in Roger Rabbit! Hooray for editing!

  • whats this ? another solo fat lesbian tryng to get attention ? I think yes !

FUCK OFF stop posting this shit

  • ROFL ahahah

  • yeah! right on

  • huh?

  • I highly respect this video. Thank you very much for sharing. Great messege.

  • that betty boop one was great you should upload the actual cartton if you do i hope it moves great

like it did on this one

  • WOW how you upload videos like that

they play great upload dizzy dishes

like that for me plz that looks great and it moves so fast and shows all off the video

  • Omg this is sick >.< but you kno i rate 5 out 5

    because its funny

     =P

  • im a woman i dont care we say we want equal rights yet a man still has to pay mmmmmmmmm hypocritical

a man has to open the door again

oh and we want to be spoild

women get over ur self practice what u preach ladys or u will get a bad name

    maddy xxx

  • That was kinda stupid =/

  • lol i thought it was funny, especially with the music.

  • You know, I liked the point trying to be proved in this video, yet with the music I get the sense that it's supposed to be somehow sexy or funny instead of a representation of exploitation. I'd like the video much better without the music and the scenes that were repeated (like the Betty Boop one). Either way, I'm happy to see someone who isn't apart of the female gender recognizing this inequality.

  • ho-hum...more incessent feminist bitching. To them, everything is sexist and everyone is out to get 'em. What's funny is these same people will claim to be "strong and independent" at the same time they are playing the victim card. Which one is it?

  • I fully agree with the message that is trying to be delivered, but you picked some less than adequate scenes to portray it.

  • 'Cartoon' MEANS to portray in an accentuated, exagerated and often comic or ironic manner! THAT is the POINT of an effin CARTOON! As opposed to an 'animated film'. I presume, or at least HOPE, this is an attempt at irony, that's a tad TOO subtle for most!

  • great, more feminist bullshit!

  • exactly rofl

  • BTW has anyone seen the film barnyard this is no relevance but cows which are males in that film has cows boobs! not any horns like a bull has and the female cows are pink!..things are changing though, but still every cartoon has a male character, as the image. And they're isnt much female character as i can think of is the "IT" image.

  • Don't ask me why but i always thought bugs bunny was a female, as a male i find this objectifyng women hurendous! it also hints out that men have personality and women don't and vice versa women have the looks and men don't very biased, BUT if women had more power than men in society and maybe the cartoons maybe would be female oriented with sexualization of masculine VERY masculine males lol you never no.

  • May I use this in a school project?

  • Some of these images aren't exactly meant for this video, like the use of Nala, but Barbie, Betty Boop, and i hate to say it as Chuck Jones is one of my all time heroes, the bugs bunny bit at the beginning is part of it.

But remember, the use of sexual women can be parodied, such as the clips from Roger Rabbit and Whats Opera Doc, and is therefore, funny!

  • While I agree that this is sometimes true (especially with older cartoons) a lot of these clips were used entirely out of context and the animation was very annoying. It came off as, "Whoop! Betty Boop's dress fell down, we'd better show it again fifteen times, just so that they get the point! Now let's do it backwards! Unnessicary jerking and repeating for the win!"

  • I gotta say, a lot of those were used out of context and one of those was Barbie...

  • and so on and that i think is good and should help guys and leads to more of good stuff like understanding. the same for the roles and pictures of men also created a lot by men (i think that is a bit tru for woman to)

    I hope this was helpful

  • its a lot up to ladies. Not to fight men and say everything is there fault and try to get them to show us in a different way or show a womans wiew. To play the victim as many so prefer to do, becose they dont know better is wery destructiv. Its up to us to produce something different also that way guys might learn and get a better understanding like "aha this is kind of what a woman feel"

  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Jessica Rabbit is awesome. The point you made is true, though.

  • I think showing Jasmine in this is kind of a mistake. She was actually a free-thinking kind of gal. This goes for Pochahontas, as well. Older cartoons are easy to cite on this violation. Jessica Rabbit was intended to be a parody of these images. This may have been a problem in days of old, but women in cartoons are playing a larger part these days. I think it's a bit of an old point. If we raise our daughters right, then WE should be more of an influence than the media.

  • I Think A Women Can Be Sexy Without Make Up But So Many Women Pile It On Now Days & I Think Women Can Be Sexy Even If She Is Not Stick Thin.

  • No one's brought up that even if the media portrays women a certain way it's the parents that end up doing something or not doing something about it. The biggest reason people are screwier now than they were is because no one wants to parent anymore.

  • Psychology - Rape is NEVER justified even if a female is wearing revealing clothing. I don't hate women who wear makeup or are skinny. Geez if I did that I'd lose out on some awesome friendships. I hate the fact that some of my friends feel they need to wear makeup and be skinny to be beautiful. The media definitely has a HUGE part in that. Girls are bombarded with media images that show them that to be accepted, they must look like the women in those images.

  • This video was not intented to make a sexist generalization of the female race. It was compiled to examine an aspect of media that tends to push these generalizations and sexist stereotypes quite hard, and on a young, impressionable audience. If Betty Boop wants to flip her top down, thats fine! BUT, there needs to be a balance. Women simply are not portrayed often enough in childrens media for there to be such a skewed perspective of female behavior.

  • i agree with you on that. I don't really care what Betty Boop or Roger Rabitt's wife do in cartoons I would just like to see more woman in cartoons and not being a sexist stereotype while doing it.

by the way cool vid. i like how the music and the clips are perfectly timed with each other.

  • cartoons are a world of their own and after that,,,no more need by said by me!

  • If women are truly being treated this way, why do they continue to voice them? If porn objectifies women, why do women continue to be a part of it? If music videos objectify women, why do theyb continue to shake their butts. They "objectify" themseleves, if you even want to call it that. Don't walk around naked in front of a guy, put on perfume, bend over, moan, jiggle, throb, and then call rape 5 minutes later. A silly example, yes, but it gets the point across.

  • exactly

  • I agree to an extent. Women as a race does not appear in porn and music videos, but yes, some individual women do. The problem with this is that our society is shaped in a way that we judge the entire female population based on the few usually negative images we see in common media such as cartoons, videos and porn. The problem is bigger than the small percentage of women that do objectify themselves for money and fame, the promblem is our society.

  • I agree with that

  • "If porn objectifies women, why do women continue to be a part of it? If music videos objectify women, why do theyb continue to shake their butts."

    One simple word: money. Sex sells. Have you ever met a prostitute who likes her job? Do you honestly think that women in general want to be portrayed as sex objects? The girls who wear tight hip-huggers in front of males who they know will give them attention don't really think about the image they reflect on women as a whole; {cont..}

  • all they want and care about is the attention they didn't get from daddy. It's like how an drug addict's mind works: "I think it's bad but I NEED it."

People generally try to do what is expected of them. If there is constant pressure for women to be sexy, is it their fault they try?

  • Yes, it is their fault. I know it's idealistic to say "be an individual", but I live by that. I hate women that wear makeup, as well as skinny women. The actions a person does reflect the individual, not an entire group. One woman's action doesn't reflect the entire sex of women.

  • That being said, there are traits that are common among MANY members of a group, such as women. The very fact that women wear makeup says that they don't feel their natural beauty is good enough and that they need to "enhance" themselves to impress men, women, society. It's sad, really.

  • No. When we see women as a whole thinking, acting, and feeling the same way it's no longer the individual women who have unhealthy thinking patterns. As Aristotle would say, the whole creation is more important than the sum of the parts. Look at the bigger picture.

You yourself admit that women wear makeup to impress men, women, and society yet you still expect them to have the mental capacity to not care. Make up your mind.

  • [...cont.] There was a recent study done by some researchers at Harvard University. 70% of Harvard Students, all women, said they felt ugly after looking at the average magazine cover with a woman on the front cover. 70% of HARVARD students! Women's magazines centre around body image 10.5 times more that men's, kids as young as 7 now know what 'dieting' means, and you're telling me you hate women who wear makeup and are skinny?

Hey, do you also hate men who don't cry?

  • Maybe if you had taken the time to crack open a book on psychology you would know that people are products of their environment. If one is socialized in an environment where sexism is rampant towards women you'll end up with what? Take a guess. When you're talking about something as deeply rooted and internalized as sexism, like any other serious psychological dysfunction, the oppressed take on the traits of the oppressor.

  • I happen to have opened a book on psychology, for the past four years now, and you've completely neglected the other half of the debate: nature. All of these images appeal to the innate, natural images which excite men. Unless you want to label male sexuality as oppressive and misogynistic, this video is pointless AND sexist. Furthermore, why not look at how images in cartoons influence men?

  • What does nature have to do with this? Nature is responsible for war, murder and just about everything else we consider to be unethical. Nature is irrelevant when debating what's sexist and what isn't.

  • Hardly. All these ailments of society are "behaviors", and behaviors are not the result of anatomy. Unless you consider war and murder to be reflexes. Nature does tie into the debate b/c this video does NOT point to what is sexist; it points to what men consider attractive. That attraction is heavily influenced by our genes; so the only way to label these images as "sexist" is to somehow associate male sexuality with oppression/sexism.
