Meg was my personal favorite..........yes- and you always wonder what sort of person these people are in real life.........are they like their characters or completelt different?
Only ever heard that from Val L, who admittedly didn't like her. Many others seem to say she was a lovely lady and good friend. Val can come off as arrogant and bitter sometimes, and seems to really take her 'top dog' role to heart.
I like Elspeth and her character Meg and I don't believe what Val says about Elspeth at all. Val, like her character Bea, seems to be too blinking arrogant and touchy with people no matter what they say or do. I have not really warmed to both Val, nor Bea, sadly.
I think she was held in contempt, not convicted of a crime, right? Elspeth says perjury, which is incorrect and a crime. If folks in law were sacked every time they were held in contempt, there'd be no lawyers left in court! It's more of a sanction than a criminal sentence. Lawyers and reporters are most affected, the latter for doing what Meg did--refusing to give something up (like the name of a source).
Meg was visiting the halfway house run by Judy when Margo stole her car parked out front. Meg and Judy saw this from the window. Judy revealed to Meg that Margo had been at the house. Meg would not admit this while on the witness stand and evaded the question. It wasn't so much perjury. She just refused to answer the question for fear of damaging the halfway house program. I think they had been warned that it would be closed if something else happened. You are correct. She was held in comtempt.
Funny that if Elspeth was a heavy smoker, in 7 years Meg was never seen smoking on screen, even when other characters were doing it (like Greg). Maybe, maybe very early on they all had cigarettes while sitting around meg's dining table in the first flat--but I don't recall seeing her actually smoke it. As a fellow asthmatic, I can't imagine someone smoking while having it. I'm glad she didn't puff away on camera, it doesn't suit Meg at all.
I always considered Meg to be pretty ruthless. Of course she was nicer than any other screw, but she was very much a Vera Bennett: By the book and far from an enemy of discipline, both were even bitter. The only difference being she never was taken off the prozac prescribed to her after her husband was murdered by Crissie!
I respectfully disagree. Meg had a job to do but she genuinely cared about the prisoners. She was a professional. Vera only got 2 out of 3; she had a job to do and she was a professional, but she saw the prisoners as "animals" and treated them as such. She went out of her way to instigate trouble with the prisoners and constantly undermined Erica's authority. The difference between Meg and Vera is clear in how the prisoners treat them. They treat Meg with respect and seldom use her first name.
That's mostly true however there was a great subtlety to Vera's affection for the prisoners. 1stly she would occasionally have moments of vulnerability with lizzie who she saw as the mother figure she would have liked whereas her own mum drained every ounce of her confidence. she made sure doreen didn't lose her parol when she smuggled an alcohol laced cake in the prison. She let bea have time with ken pierce's daughter when she shouldn't have as she knew bea could help her stay out of prison
she seems like a really nice person. the clip of meg getting shot had me LMAO though, it's some of the worst Meg acting ever along with the 'flipper' scenes when Meg and Ann were trapped in that warehouse.
As with other girls in similar situations of having to flop around in a skirt, she's trying to fall without flashing her knickers to the camera. Watch it again and see. And personally, Meg always looked better in jeans or slacks that that sack of a uni to me. She looked younger and slimmer. The screws would have looked more able breaking up fights and such if they wore the pants to the uniform.
She always looks younger than her true age.

The breathlessness is a sign of natural shyness methinks. A wonderful looking woman as well. Thanks Elspeth.

Elspeth was quite a heavy smoker and I think suffered from mild asthma from what I read. Possibly a sign of why she is quite breathless.
