The Lumbee started identifying as "Indian" when the slaves were freed and Jim Crow laws were out into effect after the Civil War. To me I think they are a "Native American Tribe" just by a different definition of that phrase. They created their culture here, in America, and represent an early slice of America's racial history that we don't learn a lot about.
The Lumbee are fascinating. DNA and population records have proved that they're descended from free people of color (african/european mix, with some native american) who were free in EARLY colonial Virginia, like 1600s even. As slavery became more established in Va., and codified into law as race-based and life-long more restriction were put on free people of color, so they moved into frontier areas like NC where they would be left alone.

If they want to say they're Indian, that's fine. But establish this garbage as a language? They haven't been successful because it's a butchering of a language! People that speak English like this anywhere else in the WORLD get called backwoods rednecks, retards, whatever. Sadly, I lived 17 years of my life in Lumberton NC and I can say the schools were poor, the students were stupid, and there were 3rd 4th generation of families on welfare who couldn't read or write and they were proud of it.

I'm not going to start a comment war but I will say this: I wasn't "clowned" by any beautiful lumbee women. Most were pregnant by the time they were 15. I talked shit all the time like that when I lived there, and I'm still alive. I didn't run up north, I'm actually FURTHER in the south now and you know what? They're country folk, but they speak CORRECTLY and FINISHED high school. Imagine that! What about Ebonics? That's a joke too, but this video isn't about Ebonics.

Like the lady says....Indians were threatened, villified, and often killed for speaking their languages and performing their cultural rituals. The Lumbee ARE Indians and deserve their rights respected as with other recognized Indians. The prohibitions to benefit allotment are arbitrary and totally WRONG. DNA is the ONLY way to prove origin. Demand and continue to demand your rights.

I am a Lumbee, and I have this dialect. No it is not due to a lack of education because I can guarantee that I am much more intellegent than yourself. We know who we are, and thats all that counts.....what you think is worthless to me or any other LUM in NC.

It's these eastern tribes that dont accept the fact that natives did marry blacks and whites (therefore making them mixed) I am talking about. I find it really strange how they accept Heather Locklear as a member when she has nothing to to do with the Lums on a personal basis.

@wicaco That's their choice to identify as being black. If they are mixed and they choose to say they are black then that's on them. What I am saying is that the Lumbee are a mixture of different tibes to include some Siouan speaking tribes. They are also tri-racial isolates. There is nothing wrong with that but their is no such thing as being full blooded Lumbee. How can you be full blooded when there is a mixture? Do I think they are Native American? YES Full blooded anything? No!

Native Americans existed before the introduction of Africans or Whites. Lumbees are NOT a Native tribe to this country. They are a mixture. There was never even a recorded reference to Lumbee being Indian until after the Civil War.

The Cherokees, Creeks, Sioux, and Chippewa tribes that you mention, along with so many others were recorded and recognized a century -- and in some cases two hundred years or more before the name Lumbee was ever heard of, much less written down. All these tribes you name are mixed to some extent - but mixed among themselves - not among Europeans or African blacks. Native American. Pure. Peace. Love.

Hey ignorance, do you know what a docent is? I will put it in layman's terms for you. I give tours at a national historic house to people from outside of the south...some even outside of the USA. With my southern accent, it is hard to communicate sometimes with these people. If you are looking for a fight, go somewhere else.
