I've studied gnostic and new age teachings for years before Jesus took over my life. The ideas and concepts in The Shack are not new. Using the 'Holy Spirit' to tell lies is like the biggest no-no in the Bible. Please pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal whether the teachings in The Shack are true or not. There is no 'secret knowledge/wisdom' to know God. To know God you must turn your life over to Jesus. Its not WHAT you know, its WHO you know. That's Christianity. Gospel not in The Shack once.
@Crumper00 You are correct in saying we cannot fully understand God (He is infinite, we are finite). However, I think your conclusion is incorrect because God has revealed certain characteristics about Himself. If we assign attributes that contradict what He has revealed we are wrong. Furthermore, if we just start making up attributes (contradictory or not), we are venturing into dangerous territory - just look at any cult for evidence of this.
@norse82 The only attribute the book does is this ... not to limit God or how he "may" portray himself to one of his own. When God shows himself in the Bible he must limit himself as man could not stand his in his light and live. Could not God come to someone in a dream and portray himself anyway he wishes. BTW- the shack does not pretend to be scriptural nor doctrinal so arguing that it is anti-biblical is pointless.
I thought the shack represented faith as what it should be. It should be about love and relationships. It should promote respect for each other. Religion needs to be destroyed and reformed into something useful and good for society and the world. Not something based off of fear of hell and punishment for the guilty but about forgiveness and love.
I enjoyed the video. I was curious about this book and will still read it if I get a chance, but now I kinda' know what to expect. I will read it and form my own opinion, however I have a feeling it will be the same as yours.
Out of a cult myself (JW’s) I got close to the cult-busters (as you seem to be one of them). I understand why you feel the need to make this video. It can be very upsetting to even think that God could love us as Papa does in The Shack. I see the cult-busters have become a religion in themselves trying to correct everyone that does not see the Bible through your eyes.
I can only say I am so glad that I got away from the cult-busters because I was getting back into the LAW once again.
@marylouise777 If it was not for a little critical thinking you would probably still be in the JW cult. A large portion of the Bible is material that is critical of some position or another. Paul's letters were mostly apologetic in nature. Are you suggesting that he was part of a cult-busting cult? John wrote letters to the churches in Rev. that were mostly critical as well. According to you then John had a problem.
NO, not critical thinking; if it was not for my broken heart and my pray to YHWH I may still be there. My prayer was, “God I don’t know what name you want me to use Jehovah, Jesus, Abba Father, but please get me out of this religion if it is not from You.”
@apologiamixer A lie? Did Jesus not tell fables? Does this make Jesus a liar? Stories are told to give reference, the shack is a reference on how a make believe "character" portrays "his" experience with the Almighty. Never claimed it was doctrinal or scriptural based, therefore anyone that judges & makes incorrect accusations that it is, or that the author intended to twist someone else's faith is a hypocrite. But the book does make people study and that's a good thing.
Making judgments is part of our God given critical thinking. The church has been given the job of making judgments. Matt. 18:16,17, 1 Cor. 5:3, 6:3. God gave Israel prophets to judge them. There is a book of "Judges" in the OT.
Jesus wrote nothing? The reason? Jesus said,"If I bear witness of myself, My testimony is not true"(Jn 5:31) That would have given the Jews another reason to accuse him(see Jn 8:13). He therefore let others bear witness of him and his works. "Let every word be confirmed out of the mouth of 2 or 3 witnesses, thus according to judicial (biblical) counsel his works were confirmed to the masses through 4 gospels, and many other witnesses. Its all about "truth".

I guess I just catagorized the book in the same realm as The Chronicles of Narnia not as doctrine. I don't think people who understand the authority of scripture are in danger of being misled by this. People who don't understand the authority of scripture won't be argued into understanding by people attacking this fiction but faith will come by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Share the truth, God's word is true and will set them free.
Well put. The quoting of II Timothy was especially relevant to me as I was banned from the Gaither's web community around 4 months ago for pointing out some of these same things. It is mind-boggling how many formerly reliable Christian ministries & leaders have flunked the test in connection with this book. How anyone who loves the Savior can tolerate for one minute the portayal of Jesus as a bowl-dropping clumsy incompetent I will never understand. Plus all the all the other heretical lies.
Deception is a mysterious thing. It is obviously not an intellectual problem, but a spiritual one. Nazi Germany was an educated society. Educated sinners can become very efficient sinners, able to fly large planes into towers etc. The Shack appeals to many who think they have a broad intellectually enlightened view of God, thus the door opens wide to prideful blindness. Let us fear lest we too become cast aways.
You have to ask yourself one question. Would Jesus approve of the heresy obvious contradictions with what the bible clearly teaches, weak christians are led astray by these why would you want to lead them away from bible truth.
And strong Christians are the ones that come out of seminary school or off the mission field and they can tell you where to go in a heartbeat. Yap, they got the goods on the weak Christians all right. I can see it in their writings. They eat meat and you weak Christians are still on milk LOL. That’s telling them a thing or two don’t you think so. I think Jesus might even push them of his lap just for crying. :'(
Isn't it our fear in other people that causes some to dislike this book. This book is FICTION, you said as much (and then you talked about how other "fictional books" have created cults). But isn't it choice that makes us all similar? Isn't this book another choice for people to make ... and how could this book be a way for people to get closer to God? I have faith in God and therefor I have faith in his people and without that, I would ridicule the entire world and all its people.
Having faith in God and faith in his people are two different things. We are told to watch out for false prophets and to examine everything holding fast to the truth. This is not fear, this is wisdom. King David knew full well the danger of trusting man when God gave him the choice of being judge by God or by man. (2 Sam 24:14)

This person does an excellent job of explaining why some with different theological back grounds sometimes dont understand the book or fear it maybe heresy.
The following is a quote from Brad Jersak's review of "The Shack":
"To put it another way, when I want to share what I think God is REALLY like, I'm not afraid to say, "Read the Shack. That's God as I'm getting to know him." When I've given the book to unchurched folks, my favorite follow-up question is, "What if God is really like that?" Their answer: "Then I'd follow him." Nice."
- Clarion: Journal of Spirituality and Justice. Winter Readings
During a recent radio interview with Pastor Kendall Adams, Paul Young expressly denied the penal substitutionary atonement - the heart of the Christian faith (please see my earlier quotes).
Young also stated:
"I would, I would recommend Brad Jersak's book, um, um ...that he just came up that he edited which has got maybe 30 different theologians who are opposed to the penal substitution and uh ...what's it called? Um, uh, the wrath of God is in the title, and it's a question mark, um."
Brad Jersak is an Emergent/Universalist and the book Young is referring to is entitled "Stricken by God?".
One of its many contributors was Marcus Borg who is at the forefront of the Emergent movement (with Rob Bell). The Emergent movement denies, along with many other fundamental core Christian beliefs, the divine authorship and authority of God's Word.
To read the review search the internet for the title:
"Books and Things - Book Alert!!! - Stricken by God?"
"Did God pour out his wrath on his own Son to satisfy his own need for justice? Or did God-in-Christ forgive the world even as it unleashed its wrath on him?"
And depends on this premise:
"Gods nonviolence in Christ at the cross. i.e. While the Cross was a violent episode, we are not witnessing Gods violence; the atonement is NON-PENAL. Good Friday was not the outpouring of Gods violence upon Christ to assuage his own wrath."
Paul Young is promoting an Emergent position which denies the authority of God's Word and the penal substitutionary atonement, teaches Universalism, pantheism and mysticism. It is one of the most dangerous movements in Christianity today and is devilishly leading millions astray with a false gospel, a false christ and a false spirit.
Keep in mind: if this is a book that Young promotes, what does it say of his own writings?
"The Shack" promotes the same Emergent Universalism Jersak teaches.
ele12957, have you seen pilgrimprog's review? It is balanced and well done - and I notice the naysayers have not responded there. He explains from where they are coming and so they dare not because they will immdeiately expose themselves for whom they arereally marketing.
What a powerful verse, For the wages of sin is DEATH but the gift of God is (salvation) eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Add to that Jn 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he GAVE His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have (eternal, resurrection) everlasting life! Gifts are given to those you love, those you call friends (Jn. 15:13). HIS gift to all who TRUST is salvation (from death to everlasting life).
"It is not my purpose to punish it; it is my joy to cure it."
What does the Bible say?
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith who for the JOY that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Heb12:2
I say unto you, that likewise JOY shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Luke 15:7
Adams: "But if you reject a penal substitution that Christ died as a penalty for our sins, it seems like that is the, that is the Christian faith."
Young: "I don't know if you're aware, but that's a huge debate that's going on in theology right now within the evangelical community."
Young: "how do we understand it? And how do we define what exactly took place? And Im saying, that there is a huuuuuge amount of disagreement among theologians, about what all that means."
William Paul Young denied the penal substitutionary atonement during a recent interview. To listen the interview in which Young makes the heretical denial, please feel free to look up the following article on the internet:
"More Books and Things... Interview with William Young - ALERT"
(A partial transcript is also available on the same site)
May the Lord God bless you and protect you from wolves in sheep's clothing. In Jesus' precious name. Amen.
I doubt that the author of The Shack, Wm. Paul Young is not real Christian, because he is trying to confuss our Christian faith. This is not something we misunderstood him. in fact, he does not have faith in God and in the Bible.
I was just thinking the same comment as the lady below, "excellent review"! I wanted to add a comment that there is an increasing attitude in the church called Antinomianism. I'm not sure which is the root, Antinomianism or Replacement theology. But either way the church has to repent of this "spirit of lawlessness" which was prophesied long ago.
Excellent review and full of God's truth! I have sent this and Carpentersdaughters video on to many on YouTube who were singing this books praises...I pray that they will take heed.
I recommend an article by a man who has known the author for many years, James B. De Young. He reveals the truth about William P. Young's commitment to Universal Reconciliation and its doctrines in "The Shack":

Utopiang 2 years ago
Brad Jersak is an Emergent/Universalist and the book Young is referring to is entitled "Stricken by God?".
One of its many contributors was Marcus Borg who is at the forefront of the Emergent movement (with Rob Bell). The Emergent movement denies, along with many other fundamental core Christian beliefs, the divine authorship and authority of God's Word.
To read the review search the internet for the title:
"Books and Things - Book Alert!!! - Stricken by God?"
Utopiang 2 years ago
"Stricken by God?" poses the questions:

Part 1
"I don't need to punish people for sin.
What does the Bible say!
Jesus was punished for all sin!
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2:2
He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
Psalm 103:10
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for OUR iniquities: the chastisement of OUR peace was upon him
Isaiah 53:5

ele12957, have you seen pilgrimprog's review? It is balanced and well done - and I notice the naysayers have not responded there. He explains from where they are coming and so they dare not because they will immdeiately expose themselves for whom they arereally marketing.

4Given 4life, The reason why "Naysayers have not responded is that pilgrimprog does not post anything that contradicts his point of view...

Part 2
If God punished people for sin today he would have to kill them because that is what the "wage" is.
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23
So the Book was correct
ele12957 2 years ago
What a powerful verse, For the wages of sin is DEATH but the gift of God is (salvation) eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Add to that Jn 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he GAVE His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have (eternal, resurrection) everlasting life! Gifts are given to those you love, those you call friends (Jn. 15:13). HIS gift to all who TRUST is salvation (from death to everlasting life).

Part 3
Sin is its own punishment, devouring you from the inside.
There are numerous warnings in Gods word about what sin will do to you if you yield to it, destruction and bondage.
the way of transgressors is hard. Prov 13:15
For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; Galatians 6:8
So again the comment about sin being its own punishment is very accurate!

Hmmmm! ele has a great point! Hey, ele, be sure to quote the "sacred and inspired" KJV

Part 4
"It is not my purpose to punish it; it is my joy to cure it."
What does the Bible say?
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith who for the JOY that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Heb12:2
I say unto you, that likewise JOY shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Luke 15:7
Accurate again!

During a radio interview with Pr. Kendall Adams, Young denied the penal substitutionary atonement:
Adams: "I take it that you... wouldn't agree that the cross was a place of punishment for our sin."
Young: "No. I don't, I am not a penal substitution... reformation... point of view."
Adams: "But isn't that the heart of the gospel? Is that the heart of the gospel?"
Young: "No! Ha, no! The heart of the gospel is that we are, are so pursued, the heart of the gospel is in Ephesians 1:5."
Utopiang 2 years ago
Adams: "But if you reject a penal substitution that Christ died as a penalty for our sins, it seems like that is the, that is the Christian faith."
Young: "I don't know if you're aware, but that's a huge debate that's going on in theology right now within the evangelical community."
Young: "how do we understand it? And how do we define what exactly took place? And Im saying, that there is a huuuuuge amount of disagreement among theologians, about what all that means."

Dear Christians,
William Paul Young denied the penal substitutionary atonement during a recent interview.

I recommend an article by a man who has known the author for many years, James B. De Young. He reveals the truth about William P. Young's commitment to Universal Reconciliation and its doctrines in "The Shack":
