The Blue sounds much more detailed to my ears, the Royer was a bit darker and the AKG was very dark sounding to me...........They all have their place for different types of vocalists
414 sounds great. Ribbon is dark and dull (like ribbons usually are). the Blue sounds bland and unexciting. Dull, like the ribbon. The 414 wins easily.
The royer sounds a bit thinner to my ears. Not that it's a bad thing at all. I do know they are amazing for over heads on drums. I'm not sure how i feel about the Blue, rocket series. It seems like you can grab three amazing mics for the price of 1 rocket kit.I would rather have the Kiwi or the dragonfly than a rocket kit, that way i can use multi micing witht the 414 and get the same gr8 blue sound but not have wasted 3g's on what is simply, just one mic just different capsuls. your thoughts?
Obviously this isn't going to be the best place to put up a mic comparison video. Mainly because the audio is going to be compressed via Youtube, even when you set it to 1080p. However, you can tell a difference in the microphones. I am a new fan of the 414. Mainly because it's multipatern which allows you to use it for many different uses. Omni is going to capture more room in the recording, which is why it sounds a bit bigger than the other ones. Royers are amazing and so are Blues.
Not a good comparison because we are hearing three different shots, and it seems that in one shot location has changed so acoustic of the room is different... but i liked the c414
I've yet to hear a ribbon mic I like on vocals. They tend to be too dark for my tastes. I'm surprised by how dark the AKG sounded as well. The Blue sounded best to my ears. I'd like to know what you plugged the mics into and your recording path.
Many thanks for testing. Some months ago I have made a comparison between AKG C414 XL II and the Red Mic which is amparable to the Blue Rocket Stage 1 (Solid State). Also in my own test I prefered the Red Mic over the 414 XL II although both a rather similar sounding. I have tested with my own (male) voice. Nice singer btw.
The AKG probably would've sounded a bit warmer on the Cardioid pattern rather than the omni.

Good choice of songs. Can't go wrong with Leonard Cohen. Thanks for the demo. She has a lovely voice too.

Too much change in location and mic proximity to be a real test (not to mention Youtube manipulation), but... I prefer the R121. Very smooth.

Need to hear a female with bigger voice and better audio than YouTube manages to make a meaningful comparison,.

I really think a better test would have been done blind.. i.e. the singer does not know which mic is which. Maybe next time.
