You're very impressive Torley. I came to you first for your East-West CCC advice and composition skills (very cool) but this video made me smile. Kudos for your honesty and sharing, and keep up the music demos, they're great! By the way, I've had hyperacusis plus that tinnitis teakettle whistling in my head for over a decade - you know what I mean.... Wear earplugs everyone !!!
Thank You for the Video. I known many people on Second Life with this symdrome, and other such conditions.
I have always been careful to make them feel welcomed, and try to understand what they are going throught at the moment. Second Life has a haven when to come, and relax. We all have stresses in our Real Life.
I love to go the dissuction groups, and Rp sims. I seen people express extraordinary creativity, and beauty in artwork, and alien landscapes.
...have something to eat, shower, then I study music until 10. Then I study some english and italian, play a game and go to sleep. Thats it for everyday. I also get so focused on studying music that I forgot everything else, and I feel like not progressing anything. I really want to thank you for this video, and i'd love to share more information about this with you. Thanks, Math.
hey, torley. I think I have aspergers syndrome. I never heard about it until I saw this video. I've beeing searching for it for some time and I found that I have almost all the symptoms related to it. The "rituals" thing feats perfectly on my life. I have a time to wakeup on the week and other on the weekends. I have a time to leave my house to go somewhere else (always 10 minutes before the appointment), etc, etc. Basically, I go to work, lunch for 30 minutes then back to work, go home...
People, you do not want tinitus. Trust me on that.
Use plugs when you go to concerts. If you go to concerts often, invest in professional ear plugs, these don't muffle the sound like the cheap yellow ones.
this video made me smile, a smile towards life. and a smile appreciating your achievements. keep up the good work, i find your videos always very inspirational.
you are such an inspiration and i could listen to you talk forever hahaha. i also am an aspiring producer and also have some form of autism (that of which i dont know, i was diagnosed with ADD when i was young but am finding out this is not the case).and a lot of your traits are like mine. im actually getting tested on saturday :D keep making music, keep making videos. dont listen to haters i know you dont already:D .im glad i subscribed! <3
Friendly greetings from another asperger one.. How are you.. oh its good to hear that.. im good too.. :)
Btw when im high i notice things which i cant notice in normal condition with my analytical mind.. for instance i noticed in the music video "I wanna go" by you know who, that the baby and dogs are whistling :D ..
Awesome find Torley!!! I still have some of my old Music Mags, cool to see how they would see the future, and where we are now with so many options. Thomas Dolby is one of my fav musical geniuses, love "The Gate to the Mind's Eye" yes!. Saw him a few years ago on his tour with the other genius BT who played "This Binary Universe."
I luv u Torley!!! Keep your head up and keep making music. You are an inspiration to all. My brother has OCD, Aspergers as well as some other things, and you really helped me look into life the way he might. Before I can honestly say I never tried to understand him (because of personal reasons) and watching this helps me alot. Luv u!!! ;D
There was a time when i was in a psychiatrical hospital. These nurses who worked in there, they were so sure that i had this asperger syndrome. First i felt myself very depressed because of that knowledge. Some time after that i began to think that it isn't so bad thing at all, because many asperger-people are very talented. And i grew up to like it. In the end some psychiatrist who had this power to decide about things and also had "workmanship" of autisms.
I just discovered your work and your YouTube channel this evening. As a father of a child with AS, I really appreciate your willingness to talk about it and share your experiences. Thank you!
Thanks for this great upload and your great attitude to life, you are one of the most inspiring people I have every come across! I found this video by searching youtube to find out about Aspergers syndrome because I strongly think one of my son's has it. It's great to hear your voice again too - I used to follow your tutorials for Secondlife but had to stop going on there because secondlife almost became my first life!
Torley, you are a genius. I don't care what anyone says. You are one of the most intelligent people I've ever come across. You are absolutely amazing! Please do not ever stop you!!!
I enjoy your tutorials and your music, and creativity so much, Torley. Now I get to enjoy you as you are. Wonderful to listen to you. Yes a great share. And yes, all of us have problems with something. My mom was bipolar, my son has PDD with anxiety, I have experienced depression, and been disabled(losing my career) by fibromyalgia-finding SL a good place when feeling isolated! One of the things you show in your video is that you can laugh at yourself. We all have to, we have to liten up!
Just glad to see someone with Aspberger's able to have your great attitude and ablilites. My nephew has Aspberger's, along with ADHD. It is good to see that his future is not bleak, and that he can have a happy and fulfilling life.
Torley, I thank you for your music, your reviews, and now for your honesty.
I applaud your courage for sharing this story. Upon listening .. i'd like your opinion on this mantra/attitude.. one that I've seen displayed by many Type A personalities throughout my life.
This of course being the: " Fuck everybody, i'll do whatever the fuck I want .. I don't need acceptance from anyone. " type attitude...
May I ask why this attitude does not work for you? I believe it to be good for one's esteem.
I have bipolar disorder and really appreciate your video. Inspiring!! My journey from out of control to somewhat stable has been an adventure. I look at the good things and keep going!!
Love to listen to you talk Torley. Thank you for graciously revealing more of the facets of your being that lend form to the person you've become and are becoming. You have touched many lives so positively. Best wishes on life's journey!
Yay, more people talking about their mental health! There is a campaign for that going on in the UK right now, "Time To Change" (youtube doesn't seem to want me to post the url though)
when i saw your videos, i instantly felt related to you, and i didn't know why.
now i watched this video, and i'm amazed, i have aspergers too and i can relate to almost anything you said what your experiences are. i'm also depressed and i have trouble having a conversation in crowdy, noisy places. torley man, i hope you'll never have to face dark times, you deserve happiness!
Thank you for sharing this video. I've enjoyed watching a lot of your videos, you have such a friendly and creative spirit and I look up to you for that, especially now knowing what goes on behind the scenes in your life.
I actually have some issues myself and I've been meaning to make a new video for this channel about it for well over a year now but I keep on putting it off for various reasons and watching this has given me an incentive to make this video. Once again thanks :)
You remind me of Japanese and Mexican people. They have a love for life and their life isn't all about money or power; it's about happiness and enjoying everything - even the bad things - and living life to its fullest.
You are quite an amazing guy, Torley. Thanks for this open discussion. You have a lot of courage to speak about things that many hide in shame. You are the example I would hope to emulate in my life as I try to share myself with family, friends, and the world.
Just wanna say thank you for being so open with us and talking about all of this. When I was 4 I found out I had below-average hearing, when 14 that I had Aspergers and much more recently that I had depression, it's refreshing to hear someone being so open about Aspergers.
dude you always have my respect as a musician and as a person cause you so positive i applaud you my friend i wish you only the best in all aspects of life
Thanks for sharing some of your inner Torley! One has to come away with a better feeling toward other people, and more respect for your creativity. Good stuff, my video friend. :-)
I can't claim to understand as well as someone who has these conditions would, but I have been in the darkness, metaphorically, almost my entire life. You know, it's interesting. Recently as well, my mother has been saying that, "Money comes and goes, but time is irreplaceable." It is most certainly true, but me and her differ greatly on what angle we approach that by.
Thanks for sharing this with us, Torley. You've talked about it a little bit before, and I certainly enjoy the discourse.
If this flip is because of Photo Booth, there's an "effect" you can install that'll let you both preview and record un-flipped. It's over at the macrumors forums and you should find it if you search for "UN-MIRROR yourself in Photo Booth - patch"
Hi Torley, we never met in Second Life, but you through your videos and other guys on the spectrum I met there have really helped me a lot, so I would like to thank you. Thanks to you I could understand who I am and found the courage to go to a doctor for a diagnosis and being helped. And it made a positive difference to me too :)
You are an amazing human being man, I mean that. I've never encountered someone so pure of heart. I think that you're very brave for sharing your thoughts with us like this and I personally would like to say thank you!
I literally had tears at the end of the video, you are an amazing person Torley.
There is one sentence you said that I won't forget.
Thanks for sharing these intim aspects of your life, I am sure who has a bit of conscience is gonna listen and appreciate and learn from this video, a lot.
I have watched many of your videos thinking about how I wished I had your ability to speak, play music and have so much "awesomeness" bottled up inside. And now, I have even more respect and admiration for you Torley. Thanks for sharing with us.
you are such an inspirational person and i find it awesome how you can love music the way you do having hyperacusis (.... wow it says i spelt it wrong) being bipolar and just be extremely enjoyably and positive cause i can certainly say you have made me happy when i felt down for very stupid reasons
you are one of the last people i could think of that could have bipolar in fact that does not seam plausible to me i mean you are just such a positive person
I always enjoy your synth tests, here you show real potential as a speaker or spokesperson. This is really interestng. I had two students I was told had asperger syndrome, both very musical and intense, focussed, great students.
i think what alot of people forget is that these "problems" mold us into the people we are today, the problems and rough times in our life are the things that make us strong and help us to really appreciate and live our life to the full. i have chronic fatigue and even though times are extremely tough and lonely i have learnt a great deal about life. and i know that when i do recover i will be able to live life to my full potential.
thankyou Torley for the inspiration and hope you have given me
I'm not directly concerned with either of the problems you've been through, but I want to thank you for sharing your thoughs with us. Friendly salutation from France.
it may sounds strange (and maybe offensive, i apologize if so), but since my social capabilities towards strangers are limited without having a mental disorder i sometimes ... wish to have something like asperger to strengthen my skills in what i like, which are mostly creative tasks.
I appreciate your willingness to share a part of your life here! This will inspire & help many now & in the future. I already find a reminder in your video about the importance of being authentic. So much easier to filter in the goodness of Life that way..thank you!
Yeah.. Although I didn't see a psychologist, it's pretty clear to me that I have OCD and bipolar disorder. Every time I go to a down period and come back I think "Oh, I'm alright, I don't need to consult right now, and I don't really want to take pills anyway" always putting everything in life at a higher priority and pushing that day I'd consult. I'm not comfortable because my mother knows nothing about it and she's not the kind of person I want to tell that kind of things to.
I am going to share this video with members of my family who I think will find it very helpful. I do have one question that I would ask you to answer either here or in SL with an IM to my av Rob Fossett. Is there any link between autism and hyperacusis?
Torley, this is a really remarkable video and I thank you for making it. I must say, that since I joined Second Life in 2006, I have watched many of your YouuTube videos with interest, and other than a reference you made to hyperacusis, I have been constantly amazed by your talents without knowing anything about the challenges you have faced and continue to face.
Second Life was a nice experience for me as well. I have been given the chance to meet so many wonderful people. Im glad you have been able to find a place that you feel so welcomed. I also applaud you for being brave to share about yourself as well.
I believe that the idea of "bipolar" is quite wrong labeling of the normal and healthy emotions one gets, it sounds to me like you were encountering grief: the transition, the death of the father, taking away of the hearing. Lost things you can't get back. I have more I can say from personal experience with autism but people need to understand that its just another form of mentality, not good, not bad and sometimes very very gifted.
Just don't let people con you into the belief which is sold so easily that having any sort of neurological difference is a reason for using pharmacological solutions. Because these are marketing ploys and can lead to real serious health and physiology problems.
Avoid any kind of drugs, including if you can the basic anti-histamines, because even those simple things can produce not only cognitive damage over long term use...but liver and kidney damage which results in a lowered immune system.
@AlterEgoTrip --- ♥♥♥♥♥ I can't love your comment about medications enough! Thanks for that. I also want to mention that one shouldn't trust just any psychotherapist or neuro-psych they encounter. Always proceed critically and cautiously, do a lot of independent reading in peer-reviewed literature, about your diagnoses -- Don't be afraid to discuss matters with your doc. Stay informed and be careful :) We might need to start the Torley-Asperger's-Bipolar support group, lol j/k
@AlterEgoTrip -- I was just about to chime in regarding the labeling, categorization, and definition of "syndromes" like the condition / type, "Asperger's." It's becoming obvious that quite a large portion of the population is "afflicted" with this condition which, in my humble view, is merely a collection of characteristics, which may make certain aspects of life more challenging than they are for the average person -- but should that be an argument to strive toward becoming more average?NO :)
@baiNEKO To disregard the entire gifted difference would be like throwing out something the entire society needs.. I believe that sometimes knowing things, traits and such helps people embrace their difference, but I fear that the general public would rather attempt to create a false sense of normality where sadness and enthusiasm are often perceived as pathological.
I think to make genius and giftedness into pathologies rather than embracing them as they should be, is what many tend to do.
Loved this vlog Torley. I'm hard of hearing myself and am assisted with hearning aids, I can't stress how much they help, I urge you to invest more time in the possibility of you getting aids.
I'm also a Music Techie, and was wondering what was the EQ matching software you used again, I missed it first time round. Seems like it'd be a great thing for me. Much happiness your way. :)
Well I think the combination of what you listed as having is what more people need Torley. The world would be a much better place if that were so haha! I would have to admit as well never suspected you to have any of what you listed. Just from your ability to articulate so well. It's actually definitely above average. As for you music I listen Dream Journal 2 often. I have to get to the rest of your music soon an check it out.
That video took balls Torley.. Very nice job! I wish you only success for the rest of your life. Keep making all kinds of your Youtube vids.. You are a very interesting human being. Good luck in all that you choose to do.
The problem in the southeast (and other areas) is seeking help on your company health insurance plan is career suicide. Employers are violating the law and privacy and they are looking at treatment regimes and they will subject people they don't want around to constructive termination if such people are not the perfect Aryan ken or barbie doll they want for their perfect Aryan corporation.
I can't recommend people seek help on their company health benefits at all. It is a trap.
I didn't know you were an aspie. I've been watching your vids for a long time and I never imagined you would be the anti-social type. I still don't know a lot about Asberger syndrome, but from what I've learned from documentaries and online resources, I understand that people with Asberger's tend to be somewhat withdrawn in social situations, have difficulty with eye contact, and have intense personal interest. If all these things are accurate, I might have Asbergers! I've always been that way.
It is always such a pleasure to listen to you speak. I've listened to you off and on for the last year, and you have really helped me make it through some rough times. Your joy and zest for life though it may not have always been, does in fact rub off on those that have the opportunity to hear. Thanks again.
Thank-you for sharing Torley. I've found that a lot of folks who are extremely creative end up also having to deal with mental issues (especially ones that move in cycles). I'm hypomanic myself, so I spend my life desperately trying to get into a state where I can be creative... but when I'm there, it's the best feeling in the world. It really sounds like you've put effort into healing and learning about yourself and your condition, and I commend you for that :) *hugs*
Really awesome video having a disability myself its very cool when other share their story's too, keep it up always I really enjoy all of you're videos thanks a lot.
I've got Asperger's aswell! I'm also a Synth lover! Hehe

If this flip is because of Photo Booth, there's an "effect" you can install that'll let you both preview and record un-flipped. It's over at the macrumors forums and you should find it if you search for "UN-MIRROR yourself in Photo Booth - patch"

Torley, I doubt any disability could hold you back--you're prolific to the n-th degree.
Your ability to focus and complete projects of all types has been a huge inspiration to someone like me with attention deficit disorder.

I have watched many of your videos thinking about how I wished I had your ability to speak, play music and have so much "awesomeness" bottled up inside. And now, I have even more respect and admiration for you Torley. Thanks for sharing with us.

Torley,
you are such an inspirational person and i find it awesome how you can love music the way you do having hyperacusis (.... wow it says i spelt it wrong) being bipolar and just be extremely enjoyably and positive cause i can certainly say you have made me happy when i felt down for very stupid reasons
you are one of the last people i could think of that could have bipolar in fact that does not seam plausible to me i mean you are just such a positive person

I always enjoy your synth tests, here you show real potential as a speaker or spokesperson. This is really interestng. I had two students I was told had asperger syndrome, both very musical and intense, focussed, great students.

i think what alot of people forget is that these "problems" mold us into the people we are today, the problems and rough times in our life are the things that make us strong and help us to really appreciate and live our life to the full. i have chronic fatigue and even though times are extremely tough and lonely i have learnt a great deal about life. and i know that when i do recover i will be able to live life to my full potential.
thankyou Torley for the inspiration and hope you have given me

it may sounds strange (and maybe offensive, i apologize if so), but since my social capabilities towards strangers are limited without having a mental disorder i sometimes ... wish to have something like asperger to strengthen my skills in what i like, which are mostly creative tasks.

Is there any link between autism and hyperacusis?
c21CanadaBob 11 months ago

AlterEgoTrip 11 months ago
Just don't let people con you into the belief which is sold so easily that having any sort of neurological difference is a reason for using pharmacological solutions. Because these are marketing ploys and can lead to real serious health and physiology problems.
Avoid any kind of drugs, including if you can the basic anti-histamines, because even those simple things can produce not only cognitive damage over long term use...but liver and kidney damage which results in a lowered immune system.
AlterEgoTrip 11 months ago
@AlterEgoTrip --- ♥♥♥♥♥ I can't love your comment about medications enough! Thanks for that. I also want to mention that one shouldn't trust just any psychotherapist or neuro-psych they encounter. Always proceed critically and cautiously, do a lot of independent reading in peer-reviewed literature, about your diagnoses -- Don't be afraid to discuss matters with your doc. Stay informed and be careful :) We might need to start the Torley-Asperger's-Bipolar support group, lol j/k
baiNEKO 11 months ago
@AlterEgoTrip -- I was just about to chime in regarding the labeling, categorization, and definition of "syndromes" like the condition / type, "Asperger's." It's becoming obvious that quite a large portion of the population is "afflicted" with this condition which, in my humble view, is merely a collection of characteristics, which may make certain aspects of life more challenging than they are for the average person -- but should that be an argument to strive toward becoming more average?NO :)
baiNEKO 11 months ago 2
