to KurtCobain, HONESTLY? Kata or forms are simulating a fight the purpose is to teach your muscles and create good muscle memory, it forces you to slow down and work on precision, power, focus, and flow. Forms are very useful and important for teaching basic techniqe. After you have the movement down then you can enhance, embelish, and expand yourself.
"Hang a heavy bag in your basement and use your legs as you would your hands. Of course, practice as much sparring as you can. You have to get wet in order to learn to swim."
Lao-Tzu is supposed to have said, "He who knows does not speak; he who speaks does not know." However, he himself wrote five thousand words to explain his doctrine.
Does the word "sailor" mean that a person can swim? And speaking of swimming, can you learn it by grinding your horse stance and performing idealistic land exercises?
What do I think? Forget about this "organized despair" you have accumulated and go back to your boxing.
Boxing? I dont box, I practice TKD. Dude, lose your belt becuase you obviously do not deserve it. And do not compare yourself to Bruce Lee. You're just a confused individual with no life except misinterpreting quotes and arts. Give up your journey as a martial artists if you do not wish to accept a vast discipline. I will not debate this any further. Im done. Youre just a lost cause. You are nothing. Do not even call yourself a martial artist. I do hope you realize yourself someday.
the last two posts were quotes from bruce lee's on the pointlesness of kata. At no point did I, or ever would I, compare myself to Bruce Lee. And I have given up on karate, that's why I study JKD. As I stated in a previous comment. I just think its funny, many consider Lee to be the greatest martial art of the 20th century till they find out he verbally bashed there art. Like the writing he had on his school wall- "show me a classical karateka and i'll show you a dead man"
Bruce Lee created the idea of Jeet Kuno Do. He is often cited as the greatest martial artist of the twentieth century. Since it's his martial art I find the most applicable as self defence then it's his ideas i see the truth in.
I agree with you dude, no use in a fight but it doesnt mean they are usleless. Go any school and ask the masters there what is the purpose of a kata and maybe youll understand. Go into boxing if all you want is to fight.
I agree that kata has merit, but i'm asking where is the use in a self defence situation? The reasons for studying martial arts:
self defence
confidence
fitness
control
Kata maybe helps you control the techniques, but honestly are you going to have 100 % emotional control in a real situation?
I studied karate, and judo. I'm currently studying aikido and jkd and aikido has useless bokken/jo katas. Bruce Lee didn't see the point of kata either, otherwise JKD would be much like classical styles.
confiednece, fitness, you sound like you come from one of those ymca schools. Martial arts is all about respect, discipline, and most of all culture. It is within katas that the essense of the martial arts flows. You may not understand this now, but soon as you proress it will become clear to you.
ok anyone who says that martial art is first about culture is a fool. You ask a parent if they'd rather there child learn a martial art thats first priority is self defence or cultural awareness, and see what they pick. And no the essence of martial arts come from every single technique, not the ability to remember when, where to step and when to kiai
Look dude, culture is what ties everything together, like discipline, respect, devotion, and an overall way of life. You clearly cannot grasp that. And as a 2nd dan, you should be ashamed of yourself. You do not even deserve that kind of rank if you're too stubborn to understand the true purpose of martial arts. Do you even think Bruce Lee trainined yearning for a fight? No, even he understood that martial arts is yes, self defence, but its mostly an honorable way of life. Good day.
Any other reasons come after that, and kata doesnt teach defense. There are a million ways to teach what kata teaches in a more usefull fashion, but these classical styles are so dogmatic.
2- bringing bruce lee into an argument about kata and use it as defense is pointless, because he despised kata
3- Did Bruce Lee train and yearn for a fight? Yes, he used to often pick fights as a gang member, with rival gangs when he was studying wing chun.
8th time world FREE style champion. All Chloe does is kicks to music. She's a dancer with cool kicks. Where would that scorpion kick be useed it a fight? Or a kick at a 180 degree angle? Hmm but it looks good though right? And BaBtrooper is right, i've spoken to many tang soo do trainess about the Bruce sisters, and they have no time for them. I've NEVER seen her in a sparring match, or her sister, or ANY of team fusion. Funny that...
Funny that you dont post any proof that you can do any better. Why is it that there's always an idiot that thinks martial arts is all about fighting...
if you are after real fighting then MMA and BJJ are the best, usually punches and kicks can't really KO people that easily but submissions are the best, but I think Chloe is very very good and she is good for movies, but these days many action stars do MMA not like Van damme and other kickers
ok we see she is good and fast and flexable but dame can she use her other leg to. and yes i am repeting what others have been saying but it makes you wonder weather or not she can even uses that other leg
well she aint doin it as a combat or sparring competition is she. it does not state that its tae kwon do either. chloe is good at what she does and it pisses me off to see people puttin her down. i aint seen her fightin so i wont coment on her sparrin ability. but i bet she would be good at point fightin. i wish i was as good as this girl tho. awsum
i wasnt trying to put her down, i just think she is repetitive. she isnt good at point sparring.. she has a school in essex and the fighters there are high kickers but weak and slow fighters.. tang soo do isnt meant for sparring tech , more to do with showing off
i doubt they are slow fighters if they are anything like her. and u say showing off!!! shes awsum so why not show it off!! shes well known all over the world in her field....and who are u?!!!
you think everyone in her school is up to her standards? she an advertisement, she been in low budget films and adverts, but in the martial art world she isnt known for her sparring. fighting isnt her thing only demonstrations thats why most of the kicks arent pratical, so dont talk about what you dont know.
who am i? am the 2nd dan black belt who knows more than you
there u are goin on about her fighting abilities again!!! she does not claim to be a fighter so whats ur argument over! and ur a 2nd dan is it!! im a 3rd dan tkd and 2nd dan hapkido...which i may add means fuk all..........and i respect all martial artists instead of putting them down. as a black belt urself u should 2
At least shes got technique, something you prob. do not have considering how you have to claim youre a 2nd dan in a pathetic attempt to think you have some justification for your worthless opinion.
I'm not saying that it's all about fighting, I just found that kata is totally worthless. As Bruce Lee said 'kata is like swimming on dry land' And I know that you don't have to spar to get to a black belt, its so many 100 hours of training, kata representation, and a written essay on what you understand of the art and the meaning it has in your life.
The reason for kata is not only culutral but it represents power and control in your techniques. In this modern age, its includes innovation and style. Why do you think Bruce Lee was so popular?
because he was innovative and decades ahead of the martial artists of his time. There's nothing innovative about kata because they're a set list of techniques. They are important to gradings yes, but they have no merit in a real fight. Maybe the individual techniques of the kata, but tell me when kata is important for the day to day use of any art? It's not just karate, I study aikido which has kata also, and I find that equally useless.
