  • How does this compare to your Tokai LP??

I remember Tokai being renowned in the 70s for their Strats and have seen the SG in their catalogue which interests me....

    Product Description

    Gibson Les Paul Studio Tribute

Think you can't afford a real Gibson? Well, think again! The iconic Les Paul design is enhanced with a torrified maple fingerboard for added definition, and the solid mahogany back adds a dark stained back for added beauty.

  • Fantastic!

  • u no change pickups :(

  • A great musician and a great guitar. It only can make a nice song.

  • too many notes!

  • Excellent! Really enjoyed it!

  • I'd take this guitar any day over some glorified binding.

  • Hello! Great playing and sound! Can you please tel me witch amp and cab did you choose on your POD xt? Thanks!

  • omgfmsideways - - awesome and re-posted globally via my fb xxxx!

  • i like it!!! grwat playing!!! one question though. does it have a long tenon? I ask because it's a tribute.

  • i was looking at this guitar on thomann, the honeyburst one but i don't like the p90's, did yours have p90's when it came and did you replace them with the humbuckers? if so tell me how because i don't want to have to get mini humbuckers

  • @BarelyScratched This one is the 50's Tribute Humbucker version before they changed the spec to 'dark back'. The 'dark back' version with humbuckers is still available at Thomann I believe check the website.

  • gold top honey burst

  • god sound!

  • i have £620 saved up for a guitar should iget this

  • Beautiful guitar, i'm thinking of buying one. Nice impro too.

  • nice playng nice sound really niccceee.

  • No hay dudas, esta será mi próxima guitarra. Va como piña.

  • Bravo!

  • Thinking about getting one of these, in gold top probably although yours is really nice. Sounds is amazing too. Wouldn't mind getting a closer look at some of your riffs too :P really nice playing.

  • Man, you are good. I wish to play as you :( , maybe once ... btw, thx for video, nice to hear that freaking 50s tribute LP is good as hell.

  • Great vid. looking into getting this. can you send me the link from where you bought it? on GC i saw that the pickups didnt have a cover. did you replace them?

  • @TheSnowboarder114 - more details in the video comments

I bought the guitar from Thomann de the nearest they have to it these days is the version with the dark back

  • *Throws own guitar on ground*

    -_-

  • 20 seconds in and you get a thumbs up for the tone alone...great stuff.

  • @dukenner did you do anything to the finish? it seems a bit too shiny to be the original satin

  • @EverClassic69 No the finish is exactly as I received the guitar

  • @Mattukgtr can i ask you why everyone is changing the knobs?

  • @tommy81296 - I don't know about anyone else's reasons for changing the knobs but mine is that I hate top hat knobs as they don't turn the stiff pot's so easily. To mute the guitar at the end of a song when it might be on the both pickup setting, I quickly roll my hand down both volume pots. The speed knobs I have fitted are flat at the edges and the greater circumference makes this easier.

  • @Mattukgtr

Thats what i figured, and the look of them. Havent decided if im going to change mine yet or not.

  • Thanks, that's interesting, I've done my share of soldering and rewired only strats

Lps are a different animal altogether .

My initial thoughts were to gut it and install dome BB 1/2 if I didn't like the tone of the 490r & 498t.

But I've been impressed with the tone I'm getting through my egnater tweaker 40.

  • That's good news, yours came with a pcb I'm assuming. That makes it very hard to change the pots wouldn't it?

  • @monirom94 Looking at the PCB not too bad to change the pots if you have a de-solder tool. Of course it all has to come out to do it but might be easier considering pickups, switch, jack socket and earth wire all just unplug! My other thought would be to remove PCB get some molex sockets, new pots and capacitors and re-wire it more conventionally. Of course this will also entail using some graphite paint for screening within the cavity. I assume the PCB has some screening, maybe not.

  • @Mattukgtr then the PCB could be put back later for instance if selling!

  • Did the covers affect tone?

  • @monirom94 It seemed quite bright before I put the covers on then with the covers on it still seems quite bright! So my answer is only slightly ! I was prepared to risk it because I could always change the pots to 500k to brighten things up if it had become duller sounding. As it is it is fine.

  • One more note - got the PodHD. What's your setting on this? Thanks!

  • @BlackbirdMusicGroup Marshall Plexi 100 with 4x12 with Vintage 30s.

  • hey, enjoyed this a lot. now I'm conflicted. Was going to go for the Paul with P90s to round out my collection, but damn you got me back at the buckers again. Cheers!

  • @BlackbirdMusicGroup I was going to do exactly the same because a Gibson LP for this money seemed hard to refuse the only issue for me being with the P90's, then I saw the version with the buckers and that was it !!

  • Does that one have the dark back? How much was it?

  • @dukenner No this one has the natural wood back and also the rosewood fingerboard - no dark back or baked maple here !

  • you play awesome dude, keep like that!

  • @Mattukgtr its American made correct?

  • @EverClassic69 yep Made in USA

  • nice flow of notes!

  • is that the baked maple neck?

  • @Engreval72 No, this one has a rosewood fingerboard from before they changed the specs

  • Does this have a full maple cap?

  • @brainboob yes it does

  • how is the neck? are they comfortable?

  • @Juillet187 It's very nice to play. I'm used to a 60's neck but now I am used to this !

  • Keep posting these videos Matt... I learn a lot from you... Great sound. I actually purchased a Hagstrom Viking Deluxe because of your videos. Great playing as usual.. Thanks!

  • Is it hard to add pickup covers? if you arent the one that did..how much did it cost you? sweet jam anyway!

  • @walli26 The Gibson pickup covers were about £10 each. If you are handy with a soldering iron to attach the cover to the baseplate then yes it's easy to do. The pickups must be removed from the guitar to do this.

  • Can you play Hard Rock (Gun's and Roses style) with this axe ?

  • @mattheyho It's a Les Paul !! Have you never seen Slash ?!

  • H,i how do you feel your new Sutdio compares to your Tokai's, I'm asking as you have sparked my interest in Japan LP's. I am coveting a Joe Bonamassa Studio LP hence my hugely subjective question (seems like everyone is dishing Gibson's quality control at the moment & it would have to be an internet purchase as I live in remote area in regional Australia). Any feedback is most appreciated & please keep making these great clips,,.Cheers Geoff

  • @manurewaboy The Tokai Japan models are certainly much better setup and better finished than my new Gibson LP Studio model, though I think I prefer the Gibson pickups to the Tokai ones but I never consider pickups an issue as they are something I always change on guitars. In the UK the Tokai Japan models are becoming more expensive than they were but they are still good value in compariosn to the Gibson at twice the price. When it comes to playability out of the box the Tokai wins every time.

  • and of course marvellous playing and beautiful sound ;)

  • did you add the pick up covers? i'm quite sure it actually comes without covers?

  • @Trv3GuY as I said in the description yes I added the pickup covers and changed the knobs from gold top hats to amper speed knobs.

  • Ok Matt, it's not the guitar, it's you. You can probably play the same killer blues riffs on a pair old maracas so stop wasting your money. Leave that excuse to people like myself that have no talent and blame the instrument. ; - )

  • Oh Men. What a skills !

  • Awesome playing, sir!

The difference between this and the Standards are:

    - Different pickups.

    - This finish is thinner (better IMO).

    - Standards have rosewood fretboard, 50s tributes have Baked Maple fretboard.

    - Price.

I'm gonna buy one this X-mas!

  • @EpicFlyingDude They have changed the spec on the Gibson website the current spec has a dark back and the baked maple fretboard. This guitar has a rosewood fretboard and natural wood back. The pickups on this are the same as the ones that came on my 1990 Standard.

  • @EpicFlyingDude With this guitar and the current dark back ones you don't get these 'Standard' features:-

    - edge binding to body and neck.

    - nitro high gloss finish

    - one piece back (this is 3 piece I've seen others with 5 pieces - what does that newer spec dark back cover up ?!)

    - a Gibson Hard Case

  • @Mattukgtr Ah okay!

Well I like the look of the DB Gold Tops alot, but the baked maple, not so sure about that.

The rest seems fine I guess. Keep up the good work (:

  • @EpicFlyingDude just noticed that the body is 1/4 inch thinner than on the Standard

  • @Mattukgtr oh is it? really strange!

  • great as always sounds awesome

  • Sir you are kick ass guitar player!
