What a nice grampa. Mine forgot to buy me a birthday present when I was six so he took of his dirty sock and made a sock puppet and tried to sing me happy birthday with it and I started crying.
I have had 2 avacado seeds in water, just like that, for about a month now. The seed halves are just barely splitting. What do I need to do to get them to grow?
I've got my first one going great. Started in the water, when the sprout was about 4" tall I planted it in a 10" pot and let it grow for about 3-4 months. It grew fast so I replanted it in a 40gal planter. It's now over 12" tall with huge leaves that I regularly break off when they start turning brown. I've got 5 more started now.
Serious avacado growers strongly discourage water germination. Soil germination makes for a stronger more fruitful and disease resistant plant, but good luck with that.
How do you know that serious growers don't use water germination? After all, just about everyone on the web sprouts it in water. They may be wrong of course, from my own experience: i tried to grow avocado's 4 times, and only 1 sprouted. This was also the only one in soil xD
If you know how to properly germinate an avocado in soil, please comment here :)
@venomouse0 That is what I've heard a long time ago. I've tried both methods and the water method worked. But after it was planted in soil they all "had a heart attack and died. I've tried different amounts of light and shady has been best. I've tried it once more, in water. Any advice? I've got them a foot tall with very long roots esp. if the pit was big. But once the pit was consumed by the plant it just commits suicide. :-(
Dude you are awesome! Hope your Grand daughter is well!
