My Old minivan sounds Exactly the same I think. It almost sounds like a power stearing problem, thats what i think it is but the sound doesn't change much when steering just when I rev up the motor Ie driving.but I still have lots of power... Any ideas??? would a bad gasket make that whining sound?
i used to have the same prob with my ac compressor(same engine), take some oil and put in the clutch grooves, rust and junk will get down in there in, this worked like a charm for me

Ah, the good old 3.1 (and all other 60-degree GM motors up until 2004)
My '95 Grand Am survived ice-cold water getting dumped into it after it inhaled the gasket. Loved that car.
