What I find terribly ironic is that the 3 baseline engines on this GE- owned aircraft are Pratt and Whitney (JT9D's?)! I understand the aircraft is a -100 and the GE engines weren't mounted until the -200 series, but I simply want to point out the irony.
I believe it's testing that engine for the next generation of 747's. They test it in flight and on the ground. The other 3 "old" ones are still fully functional!!
It's good to see that a variant of the GEnx engine is going to be entering service on a newer model 747-8i. It really is a beautiful engine that can create greater thrust with better fuel efficiency. Too bad it isn't powerful enough to carry the 747 on just two. Close though. Max output I've seen on the GEnx is over 80,000 lbs thrust.
@wa22030 Actually, in order to certify a new engine you have to be able to fly it on only the one engine. These babies are WAY over-engineered as a result.
There's reasons why a 747 will never be powered by just two engines. Even if they could be equipped with the GE-90-115B's it would not be safe. In the event of a single engine failure, only 115,000lb/f of thrust can be applied, which is not enough to keep it safely afloat. However if one GEnx, or even two, fail enough thrust can be delivered to keep it afloat until an emergency landing is executed.
@enygma3d Technically a 747-200, like this one, could fly on two of those GE engines. The highest output of a GE engine is 115,000 pounds of thrust. Double that and you've got 230,000 pounds. The other three engines put down around 50,000 pounds each. So theoretically, two of those GE engines could easily power this 747. Don't know about the -300 and -400 series though.
i know the genx engine is better and all but the PW engines looks better and is only beautiful on the 747.

I wouldnt have expected any 747-100s to still be flying. I know 200s are but was shocked to read this is a 100.

The GE 747 test plane can fly on the one engine right now its home is SCLA Victorville CA

@wa22030 Actually, they were proving the GENX-2b could power a 747 alone, only the other 3 engines are for take off.

@wa22030 its the engine used on the new 757 but they r testing its strength

Looks like your sitting at A-9 at BFI. How did you get out on the taxiway? Or, were you at Clay Lacy . . .

The conversation between the pilots and the tower was something to the effect of:
T "are you taxiing around on just the on engine?"
P "Yep"
T "can you fly with just the one engine?"
P " oh yeah!"
Pretty sure the takeoff would need at least a couple.

@SuperMpierson That's only for a twin-engine aircraft. There's no requirement for a FOUR-engine aircraft to be able to fly on a single engine!
