SO beautiful and such impossibly smooth technique! You're amazing. You've been a huge inspiration to me since the days of the licks and tricks section of your website.
You know the first time I heard this I thought, is this all the lyrics? Then after I listen to it again I thought, this is brilliant. Its not about the lyrics, as meaningful as they are, but they accentuate the great arrangement of the guitar. It is definitely listed in my favorites as well as other Maritn Tallstrom arrangements.

@pinofluvius May i ask what you use to multitrack all your videos? Im dying to do it myself but not sure how to do so.... You are astounding Martin i have never enjoyed having ears as much as i do when listening to your music :)
I've listened to this 5 times in a row now. Makes me wish I had a credit card to purchase the tab, wow. Amazing song, love the chord progression and the amazing fingerpicked melodies, you really use this tuning tastefully.
I started playing when I 22. I was so determined to play. I bought the Beatles book complete, made for easy guitar. Spent 3 yrs avg 2 hrs a day, since after the 1st yr, I didn't play everyday, I'll just say 2hrs. Learned how to pick some, like Dylan's Don't Think Twice and Dust in the Wind. I wish I had take lessons right out of the gate! As determined as I was, I would not have lost interest if I learned the theory, and may just be 1/2 as good as this artist.
If by "transcribing strumming" you're referring to the "flamenco techniques", for my part, at least, you don't have to sweat it. I doubt I'll ever get it right anyway! :o)
Hadn't played hardly in 35 years. Trying to learn everything of yours I can, which means about 4. I am so into "Road", was even proud of myself for figuring out the A tuning. Learning by watching video, I'll die of old age 1st. It's a pain I know, but I must have tab. We'll pay for that one!
You're truly an inspiration with your fingerstyle, inflections, open tunings, it's almost ethereal. All the best in your efforts. (brightflame translated--Robert. My flame snuffed long ago.
Hi, thank you for the appreciation, I´m glad you like my style!
I´ve been thinking about doing the tab for this one for a long time, however, I always get depressed when trying to transcribe the strumming on the choruses correctly. Maybe I´ll have to do a "lesson" video as well. But, don´t worry, I will tab it - you just gave me new inspiration!
You seems to be at the moment where Tommy Emmanuel would say that you have already mastered technique and now you can put emotions into that. And this is what I can see here - your heart flowing through your fingers and making strings sing :-) Great.
It is interesting that on your myspace page this tune is way out in the lead for hits so I think that you are underestimating its worth without the video.
Complete sweetnes man. Your attack is right on point. Looks so easy... with such a clean sound. Do you have your strings really close to the fretboard? Do you find it easier to play clean on a steelstring guitar?
Thank you sir. The strings were pretty close - I remember, it was winter with a dry indoor climate and I always forgot to use a humidifier... Nowadays I have a more controlled "climate", I have the guitars in one room only where it´s usually between 35-50% relative humidity.
The action on the Loef is a bit higher these days.
Playing clean for me has mostly to do with which guitar I´m used to at the moment - I used to play almost only nylon compared to steel, now it´s the other way around.
I´ve just come across your guitar playings...god never heard anything like it. You´re a great inspiration to follow. Well done, you play incredible. The best for you from cold Madrid, Spain
I can't get this song out of my head. I've been humming it for about a week. Your sonwriting is inspiring - Keep up the great work and thankyou for all of your wonderful videos.
Thank you! The unfortunate thing, however, about this song is that it works fine with the video - but if you only listen to it, it gets kinda repetetive... I´m putting a cd together and it became apparent when hearing the song a few times. Maybe I´ll have to over-produce it and add ten more instruments :)
Great to hear your making a CD. I'll be first in line to buy it when its finished.
I always feel that the best guitar albums are stripped down to just guitars and as little else as possible. Lenny Breau's "cabin fever" is a perfect example. You have the talent to hold a listener's attention without fancy effects or tricks. Good luck with it.
You will have to get in line behind me my friend! I agree with what you say for the most part but I find that some of Martin's additions like basic percussive backing and some of his other instrumental work can add interest to the flow and feel and do not detract. Not overproduced is the key and then the spark stays with the listener. I have never got tired of this tune and I must have listened to it 100 times. The contrast of melodic flow and percussive drive is a delight to the ears.
Yeah i definately have to agree there. The reason lenny could play completely solo is because he was an unrivaled genious and true master of the guitar. I think matrin's stuff on youtube sounds very professional and interesting with the basic backing. I just don't want to see his talent lost in overproduction.(something which even the great Joe Satriani is guilty of in my opinion)
Regardless, martin is a fantastic player - and i think it will be you in line behind me my friend;p Haha
You are amazing the ease with which you play is incredible. You make it look easy and it's not at all simple. Keep it up. You are the inspiration for thousands of untalented guitar players like myself.
I absolutely love your the musicality, taste and feeling that you put into all these tunes. Can't stop listening to your version of "the road that leads back home!"
fabulous, marvelous, what else? my english is too poor to comment your original talent and your subtiles ideas. Never heard that since Tommy E. I try "the white shade of pale" and I'm very glad to have meet you. One again! thierry (petit guitariste français) Regards
I must be spending too long watching this great video to see all those things in your curtains Martin! - The tune is just so compellingly melodic. I love the changes and accents in your picking on this, the brush strokes, pull offs, hammer ons, double string slides as well as the ascending and descending runs. I also love the light and shade in tone. Masterful.
Hey Martin - I listen to this every day several times. I love the tune and the semi instrumental idea -it really works. I also like your magic curtains which light up in time with the music -lol!
Thank you for your returning visits! That means a lot to me. I know, the curtains look really "spaced-out", and yes - you can see all kinds of faces and animals there... And all the time I was sitting there unknowingly :)

Meanwhile, I'm a subscriber. Tell us a bit about you - pro or amateur? And though I should study the video, what kind of tuning are you using?
It´s Martin :) I have been working as a freelance musician for about 10 years, some studio and live work. I never really play my own stuff live, but I love testing and recording ideas and YouTube is such a great venue for getting ideas out of my system - and to get feedback!
Hi again - I used to play around in EADEAE in fingerstyle and posted one tune here in my first cam recording (Rollin Rag Blues). I had never thought of C# instead of the D. It adds a very different dimension and I must try it. Lovely tune by the way -it kind of sticks in the head and is very addictive in the way that the best tunes are.
I haven´t tried the tuning you mention, but I as you say, the one I´m using here is quite sweet. I seldom get around to using it, unfortunately - one should have one guitar for every tuning, I guess :)
It´s way more work than most people think to write out a correct transcription, especially with a lot of slides, percussive effects and rhythmic phrasings...
Been checkin your stuff out Martin and gotta say... Damn! You are up there with the best in my book. Best i have heard in years. Thank you for sharing. Michael
Just curious... Did you write this song? Is there a place on your web site to get the lyrics? Just from the vocals in the background, this has the makings to be a great song
Great song! I think this would be a hit with both Country Pop and Easy Listening audiences. Superb playing, and really beautiful vocal harmonizing. Congratulations!
Wow I recently stumbled across your videos and checked out your web site. Fantasic resource for any aspiring guitar players. Your sound and technique is out of this world, truly appreiciate your sharing. thank you!
Wonderful!!! I truly am inspired by your work and I have just gotten "Marie" under my fingers (thanks for tabbing it) and plan on playing it at my sisters wedding in March, in your honor of course.
I would love to learn "Road back Home" and have to some extent from this video but would you mind tabbing it out when you get time.
Keep up the great work Martin, I am glad I have a new acoustic fingerstyle hero to add to my collection of Tommy Emmanuel and Pete Huttlinger.
I am definitely going to play it at her wedding (she gave it a listen a couple of days ago and loved it and gave it the thumbs up) I am also playing Tommy Emmanuel's arrangement of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes" and Pete Huttlinger's "When the Morning Sun Breaks Her Silence". When I get "techno" enough I will post it for you to take a listen.
Thanks for giving "Road Back Home" a go.
Later, from your newest fan from The Great State of Texas, USA
I've listened to this piece countless times and still find it as fresh and an addictive listenable pleasure as when i first came upon it. Im not sure how this would sound in standard tuning but the open tuning really gives it such a beautiful and soemwhat haunting quality
I've listened to this 5 times in a row. Fantastic. Stumbled upon your music totally by accident and it is now favoured along with a bunch of Tommy Emmanuel and Masaaki Kishibe. GOOD COMPANY
SO beautiful and such impossibly smooth technique! You're amazing. You've been a huge inspiration to me since the days of the licks and tricks section of your website.

Well, I like lizards, especially geckos, so I might have taken up some of their behaviour...

Thank you!
I´m honored to hear you might play Marie, feel free to do so.
About tab for this song, it´s a bit tricky to transcribe, I will give it a try, I´ve had some requests...
Regards
Martin

Martin,
I am definitely going to play it at her wedding (she gave it a listen a couple of days ago and loved it and gave it the thumbs up) I am also playing Tommy Emmanuel's arrangement of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes" and Pete Huttlinger's "When the Morning Sun Breaks Her Silence".
