@gnawoffmyarm i don't know for sure (i'm guessing), but i'm thinking that it's a human sacrifice to odin (because he demanded human sacrifices - men for the einherjar and women for the valkyries) for protection during winter (thor and heimdall didn't take human sacrifices, i think)

Bathory is and will always be my favorite band. I have the logo tattooed across my back even. One of the happiest moments of my life is when I met Quorthon's father Borje Forseberg (aka Boss) at Wacken '07 at the Blackmark booth. I talked to him about 20 min, and he told me stories about Quorthon, one of him when he was a kid and Borje gave Quorthon a drumset. It was great, yet happy and sad all at the same time. He signed a CD (first album) my Wacken ticket, and gave me another Bathory shirt.

Maybe the 9 thing is concerning the human ability to percieve... As we can for example only remember 9 persons at the same time in a book ;). After that you get confused and it is a great but unfortunately seldom used as only some of the greatest writers uses it :P. Maybe thats why Quorthon was often feeling obliged to have 10 songs on his albums? xD (Excluding the 2 first viking albums, as these mezmerize you within its own scope of epicness anyhow... Otherwise he used this for bigger effect?).

vinterblot is a winter sacrifice to the gods. It is on wintersolstice the 21st of december. It is to make the sun return. You give 9 sacrifices... humans or animals... but of course thats not how we do it nowadays. we sacrifice other things, such as food, mead,milk or other things. It is a very beautiful tradition. It's the same in summer, sommerblot. 21st of june.
