My favorite memories of Yzerman were watching him play on an injured knee in the 02 playoffs. Even on one leg, he was still our best player. Very inspiring.
Yzerman wasn't dirty like Messier, because he didn't have to be....which speaks volumes as how great he was. Much respect to Mark for being a great player and leader, but Yzerman was a superior.
The way i see it, Messier was a great captain, and he really helped the Rangers to that cup win. But he never joined a team like the Red Wings, who at that point were one of the worst teams in the league, Yzerman took the "dead wings" and turned them into a three-time cup winning team. Messier deserves credit, but he won as a captain with the Oilers, who ruled that decade, and the Rangers, who weren't horrible either. I just think that what Yzerman did was more impressive.
I think hockey in Germany isn't bad but the NHL is the best league in the world. My dream is to visit the United States and Canada and see their NHL games. So, I prefer to see NHL games.
I'm an 18 year old Red Wing fan. If I ever have a hockey player for a son....I will tell him to play like #19....Steve Yzerman, greatest captain ever. Fucking miss Stevie Y he's exactly what they need right now in 2010.
@brandonio081684 personally country is my favorite music, i think this song was perfect, someone hoping they will be remembered when everyone admires him so much... perfect IMO... but again i'm a country fan so i guess you'd have to be a country fan.
Steve is amazing his #19 needs to be retired from the league not just the Wings. And I wana hoist the Cup so so bad our junior league cup doesnt even come close not that ive hoisted our cup just sayin it dont compare
I watched about 10 seconds of this video...why a country song? Cheesy, sappy crap. I'll take the Yzerman tribute video that has the Bush song over this.
I think he may mean that Messier was able to assume a leadership role even when he wasn' t the captain. Now I'm not totally sure about this but I don't think Messier served as captain for all of the Oiler cup vitories in the 80s? I would love to see a good Messier vs Yzerman debate here. Both amazing leaders and I personally have an Yzerman preference. I feel that while messier was in Edmonton he was surrounded by a stud team that didn't require his leadership... thoughts?
Messier was only the captain for the last cup in the oilers dynasty..so i guess you oould argue that he wasn't as important to their victory as stevie y was.
@jaredmellow what about Messier in New York, just saying Yzerman is my favorite player all time in any sport, Messier for the Rangers had the most clutch games, the hat trick in game 6, BUT Yzerman's perseverance against Vancouver down 2-0 was a movie-like moment of leadership and taking pain
@tdbcrackfiend That's a close call simply because Messier didn't do it long like Yzerman did.The only difference between Messier and Yzerman is Messier like to talk publicly alot and Yzerman did it behind closed doors and got results.
I respect Messier, but he never changed his game for the team. He was a great leader... but Yzerman was a complete leader in every way. Also, I'm not a homer. I don't live in Detroit. Never even been to Michigan.
You must have satellite TV to follow the career of Yzerman so closely. Messier broke the NY Ranger's curse as C and brought the Cup to Edmonton without Gretzky as C (winning the Hart). He is 2nd alltime in playoff scoring in goals/assists & points and regular season scoring. +The guarantee & hat trick.6 Cups. He never needed to change his game...Conn Smythe during the first cup...series/game winning goal during last cup. Big pressure, he always came up big time. Much repect to Steve Yzerman.
Burnaby "Joe" Sakic was better than Yzerman.
