I do believe that no matter what Led Zeppelin played their were fantastic. To date no one has been able to reproduce any of their songs. No matter if it is rock and roll, blues or a ballad they went over the top...
Irony....the Berlin show not a good one at all. Instead of having a signature final epitaph for Bonham, this is not what we want as a legacy for Zeppelin. Page had his worst night here of the 80 tour. Plant, jones and Bonham are trying so hard to cover his ass that night but to no avail. There are a couple solid shows on the 80 tour but no where near in comparison to the work they did through 75. The band fed off of Bonzo and Jimmy and by 80 they had checked out. Bonzo did not want to tour
Jimmy is one of the three reasons why I picked up a guitar. The other two reasons were: My dad had a guitar laying around the house. The last reason is because I made a friend who played and he showed me one riff. From then on I was hooked on playing and taught myself the rest I know thus far, 16 years later. Some of the first songs I learned were Led Zeppelin songs because I wanted to learn from the best.
-Do bluesy bands likes Zeppelin, Floyd, Joplin, Doors, Hendrix, and The Who give you chills? Are you physically attracted to seeking truth in music? Well I am formally inviting you to take a listen to my channel, Using your open mind take the time to hear my tunes... Robert, my heart goes out to you.whenever i hear this song. No one should ever have to go through what you had to go through. Losing a child and a person you knew since you where a child is the worst thing anyone can expierience.
Does anyone else feel a tinge of sadness when at 4:52 Page's guitar comes in a little bit heavier than before to play that melody? I think its because this is the last performance of this song, it just sounds sadder.
Jimmy is lacking much talent in these shows. There were fery few moments of greatness by Jimmy Page in 1980. Correct me if I am wrong, But I am pretty sure it is due to the drinking and heroin yes?
@JustinPierce1226 Sure,I think Jimmy's performance was affected by his drug abuse in the 80' sessions and especially around the 77' N.American tour. ,But considering 2 of 4 members were smacked out on Heroin I think they did very well.I appreciate listening to Zeppelin live because you never know whats going to be played.
@whipit4me It's all the same with every great performer, Van Halen, Jimmy, Heck take a look at Plant today, guy looks nothing like before and it's sad. But recently i think Page has gotten his edge back especially with his appearence in the It might Get Loud movie, buts it's like he says, he plays from the soul, and this song doesnt have much guitar in it at all... ?
@auntjojo802 John Bonham was also strung out on Heroin. From what I've read in several books Bonham's Heroin use started just before the Physical Graffiti LP........
@whipit4me But I heard John Bonham quit heroin in 1979 or right before they played any shows in 1980. The autopsy only showed alcohol in his system when he died too. As far as Jimmy's performances in 1980, there are times when he was more than superb but not all the time and especially not their last show here where he sounded REALLY "baked" but I still love him.
@whipit4me That has to be speculation... he got FAT after 75..no doubt a lot of it was due to drinking..but he looked pretty fucking fit as shown in the knebworth footage.. Heroin turns you white and into a freaking stick...
Yeah, Page sounded pretty bad around this time. It's funny how distinctive his smacked out sound is. You can recognize it in a second. It's real clipped and terse with squiggly little out of tune bends. I wonder if other players are affected the same way.
I saw Zep in Knebworth, missed the show in Berlin, though. This is great! Plant's voice rocks at the end and the power in Bonzo's drums with Page playing so smooth, and Jonesy following the groove.
Sounds like Page was smacked out during this performance. Funny how it has such a characteristic effect on the way he plays. His phrasing becomes much more clipped.
@Deethrem YEEEAAAHH RIGHT. Guns N Roses completely blows in every way and is completely incomparable to Led Zep. If there's any band that's as rock and roll as Led Zeppelin is QOTSA.
On 7-7-1980, I was standing front row at Led Zeppelin in West Berlin. I was a 20 soldier stationed there. I, along some 6000 - 7000 people witnessed the final performance of the #1 R & R band. Although we did not know we were being treated to part of rock history, we enjoyed the show. When it was announced John Bohman died, I realized I was but a hand-full of people that saw the final performance of rock and rolls greatest band. Never forget Peter Grant was a big part of their success.
Time may have passed, but their songs still top all. Their legacy will never be matched by any band, artist, or any force that could. Their feel good performances and chaotic ballads will withstand the test of time until this earth is no more. Even then. It will keep going. Nobody is like them. We have seen the best of the best, and it was taken way too soon.
@JustinPierce1226 Well said. I've gone in & out of musical phases, but the sound of musical brilliance will never pass away. So many artists have succumbed to easy access of everything they could ever want. I understand why he might not feel the same about Led Zeppelin, it is a time gone by. A lot of life has happened since. I'm sure he is now totally aware he lost his edge. My hope now is he can pull his whole life experience together & bring that brilliance out once again. I'm counting on it.
@latache1966 that is what made zeppelin so good live. it was the same ol stuff every night . right drugs massed up a lot of ppl , john paul an robert made in threw the outdoor mostly on there own. but still all around LZ is above all others rip john
Replying to iluvmykids10 - indeed, I quite agree with you that it would have been very interesting to see what Zep could have done in the 80's. This version is slightly different than the studio one - they were allways trying to move their music "ahead". Zep's music was becoming increasingly more refined, with the emergance of Plant and Jones as leaders, and not just always Pagey. This was a remarkably fine and sophisticated performance of what may be viewed as their 'swan song' .
Well I didn't know what was going to happen if bonzo lived but page would have probbally overdosed.. I love LEd Zeppelin don't get me wrong but at least we have 1968-1980 instead of never

@whipit4me he said he just doesn't feel the same way about Led Zeppelin anymore.
What are you gonna do? Hopefully one day he will but we've been saying that for so long already.
