I didn't know there was such a thing as a Peacock praying mantis. It has the barring and the eye wing (not sure of the terminology) of an India blue peacock. Neat. I used to pick them up all the time when I was a kid. Never was afraid, never was bitten. But I always wondered if they could bite or sting. Nice to see someone caring about God's little insects.
those eyes of his are gorgeous. You're a lucky person! It's sad that people kill other's pets because they aren't fluffy or 'cute'. I wouldn't be able to handle insects as a pet, though. Mostly because of phobic reasons, but i love it when people care for nature like this.
The Camera man would say to the mantis... " You will never get this, Lalala" And everyone laugh. But one time the mantis broke the cage and he get this.
Why does this species seem more aggressive than the others i have seen. May be a dumb question to you but i have just now learned they are kept as pets. I thought i was the only one. I have one in my yard named Mister myagi. He stays around my porch.
@darthelghastN7 You bring up a good point. It is natural to be afraid of unknown things. It's too bad that most Americans can't name ten bugs in their backyard. Even adults can't name the plants and insects in their yards, these days. In this case, it must be a really scary world out there, eh? Better then that they just stay inside playing video games and watching TV.
More than any other insect group, people can relate to mantises because they exhibit a great (appearance of) awareness of their environment. They have large eyes and they turn their heads to observe the moving things around them. Beetles aren't scary like toothy, scratchy dogs and cats!
Insects/arachnids usually really bother me (even to look at on pictures/video), but I've never had the same reaction to Mantises. Is there something different about them? I can't put my finger on why they creep me out infinitely less (pretty much not at all - I catch them and let them crawl on me, in fact) than any other insect species. Even the ones that are completely harmless creep me out more. Y'know, beetles and such. It's the legs that do it. So unnatural.
@xonweb I've actually never been bitten, though I've been struck by their forearms numerous times. Other people do report very occasional bites or strikes, but blood is rarely drawn. All of these incidents are preventable, of course.
@xonweb "Mean" suggests that either I had negative will towards the mantis or the mantis was emotionally or intellectually offended by my actions. In fact, neither of these were the case. I demonstrated to the audience the impressive nature of this animal. The mantis reacted several times in a natural and healthy way. A hot stove is not mean to your hand, nor does it require a thoughtful mind to pull one's hand away. Interpreting reality accurately, however, does require some ability to think.
@xonweb Mantises will show their threat display if they are either startled or threatened, but that stems from their perception and not one's intent. I have a mantis that will do a threat display if she sees the shadow of my finger move along the rim of the kritter keeper, but will readily climb onto my hand and interact with my moving fingers without any problem. I'm sure this species gets startled but is otherwise calm when acclimated to a human hand.
In a captive universe some stress is actually a good thing! Feel sorry for dogs that get to go on a "leashed" walk for at most ten minutes each day...some older lady tugging at its throat each time it tries to leave the sidewalk.
