Wow! This is fabulous. I never knew until recently that The Police debuted in 1977 when I always thought it was 1979. Therefore, I don't have any of these very nice albums of theirs here from 1977 and must buy them. This 1977 album and others, I must buy or I will never forgive myself.
A band that would go on to a more complex sound and style started out lumped into the "punk rock" bag like so many during this time. But the hints of greatness are already apparent in this song. Is this available on CD, like an anthology CD or something?
@MattHatter Yes, look for Message In A Box - a 4-CD collection of everything they ever recorded, B-sides and all - from "Fall Out" to "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86".
I don't know if you can still buy a physical boxset (I have one, and it is a prized possession, as you might expect!!!!!!), but no harm in finding out. However, the good news is that the collection is available on Spotify if you use it :-)
@MattHatter punk rock is greatness, you make it sound like punk rock is bad.the police had started out as a punk rock band and were so good;almost everyone liked them.
@desamator11 Oh no, I wasn't putting down punk at all. I was just saying that The Police have always been seen as a slightly progressive pop-rock band and punk has, in most cases, been seen as simple. When this particular track came out in '77 they were probably just labeled as another punk rock band with not much afterthought.
Did you know that this was not the first issue of this single? the first 2000 of this single had the same sleeve but purple/blue in colour and were all hand stamped by Sting and Copeland in Copelands London bedsit/flat back in 1977. i have one of these in my collection, along with the 'Sixpack' and all the police badge shaped vinyl singles.. if anyone is interested i am going to sell my collection... which includes lots of Police paraphernalia... annuals, monthly magazine etc etc.. mail me...
my bro bought this single when it was first released the serial number on his is 001 ...it s on illegal records and the b side nothing achieving is shit hot too x.
@REDILLINGER73 like it.. i have number 1079... sory is Sting and Stuart Copeland hand stamped them (red ink) in Copelands bedsit or flat. only 2000 were first pressed.
I WISH THE POLICE DID ALOT MORE OF THIS PUNK STYLE.THEY WERE JUST REALLY GOOD AT IT AND THIS PUNK ROCK EDGE WAS MORE ABRASSIVE TO THE COMMON SAFE SOCIETY MORONS.
padovani didn't want to "leave" the police. They had begun gigging as a foursome with Andy Summers. It became obvious to Sting and Copeland that they did not need Padovani anymore because they used him less and less and his contributions began to fade due to summers' style, skill and creativity. Any guitarist that falls that fast would walk away. IT is embarrassing for all involved if you stick around.
i think andy summers ability to sacrifice and play the reggae guitar is huge. a lot of musicians really wanna showcase how good they are but i think andy sacrificed for the good of the band. i dont think many other guitarists would do that and with out him i dont think they would have gotten as big. he also pushed stewart and sting in the studio to not settle for OK but to make great music,at least thats what copeland said in an interview
@Kobeownzu81 I don't think Summers had to "sacrifice" much to strum those reggae rhythms... cus the chords and progressions he chose to play were still very technical (and brilliant). I get the feeling that he wanted to make approachable music -- and I love how the guitar snaps into reggae on so many different tracks -- but the technical skill was always there, under the surface.
I had the very first original record of this song, and the autographs of Sting and the gang. I also well-remember some of our national newspapers at that time, naming Sting as the 'Face of the 70's'
Henri can't kick himself for leaving, because I read he was asked to leave...however, Henri has done a lot of fantastic music since leaving the Police! And from the interviews I have seen, he seems to live pretty well!
but, you have to know that the main riff is interpreted by S. Copeland... He said: "When andy came to the group, i leaved the guitar in the placard"..
ha i bet henry padovani is kciking himself for leaving the police.. but then again if he hadnt andy summerfs would never have joined the band and they would never have got so high in the music industry
strange things happen

The Police are perhaps at least to me the best musicians group probably ever; Too bad they broke up.

Why have you put a question mark next to Henri Padovani's name? He was still a part of the band, even if it wasn't for very long.

even without andy and with henri they would have became big, almost every song is sting and copelands work.
andy played only the guitar very well

This comment has received too many negative votes show
andy is the weakest link. stink can play lead even better.
