When advertising is used in a context that makes sense & genuinely adds to the experience, similar to the Coca-Cola advert in Blade Runner, then it's a win for everyone. But that's rare.
The new 360 dashboard though, represents what I call 'enforced advertising', when something which doesn't really add to the experience is shoved down one's throat. If it was a bit more subtle, I'd not mind at all. But as it is, it's a potentially good interface screwed over by corporate greed, for now anyway
When I updated, my eyes became blind to the whole screen except for the little "play game" and "my games" tabs. I'm so uninterested in anything else on the screen that I haven't yet looked at any of the other pages you get. There's no point to them for me.
I guess you've already been told this a hundred times but just to be sure; you use RB or LB you can scroll though the top menus without scrolling through each item. :)
I also quite like the dash, it looks nice but the amount of ads is off-putting, but it's the games that matter so I really don't mind a huge amount.
Also, you can't find netflix in video? The default square you have highlighted is "My Video Apps", which is where netflix, zune, hulu+, etc. all normally appear. You just have to install the new versions first, from the "apps" category off the main page. One step and then they all appear in video.
Seriously, you didn't spend more than a minute or two with this before getting the camera out to cry, did you?
It reminds me of Windows Media Center more than anything, which I rarely use. I'm not too fond of more ads being on my dashboard at any given time. I bought the 360 for gaming not for viewing advertisements, however it is what it is so I'll just have to get used to it.

You click on a video or go to a website and there are ad banners everywhere as well as advertisements before a video. Isn't that essentially the same thing? xbox is not about games at all! there about money and hype... lucky for them there are one or two first party studios that actually care about game. and if it wasn't for gears and halo 3 i wouldn't even look at my xbox!

The zune marketplace is not for Zune music players. Microsoft discontinued them long time ago. It's for people with Zunepass. You can stream unlimited music on your Xbox just like Spotify. More you know..
If you click on "My video apps" on Video tab, you can find Netflix there. I really like the new dashboard. It makes stuff easy to find. It does take some getting used to though.

I completely agree with what you just said. Seems to be one big advertising now which is just not cool. Overall its ok and kind of cool that its voice controlled. And I don't think they even make the Zune anymore. As always awesome job Raychul.
@MrKapman45 Good question, you would think with the PSN being free that it would be more ad saturated than it is. Thankfully it isn't as I log on to my system to play games not look at advertisements.

@SergeantPope BTW, in my opinion, they made such a drastic change in this update because they want to sell more Kinects. It looks like this would work better with Kinect than the actual controller.

I think it's really lame that they spent all that time thinking about the best way to make the UI ad-friendly (they're such marketing geniuses!), and yet they just threw every indie games in a single list without any search or sorting, have fun finding the game you're looking for game among the 2k+ games. You can tell they really didn't give a f*** about it.
A console is not a smartphone, it's supposed to be about games first and foremost and this UI just fails in that regard at the moment imo.
You have to remember though everything revolves around marketing. From product placement in games to game reviews. A lot of people are cutting the cord so companies have to find new ways to sell to us consumers. It's not a horrible thing, It's just that were not used to seeing this kind of advertising in the game market really or maybe not as strong. I'm from the time of Dreamcast, SNES, PS1, Etc. where gaming was gaming and not mixed in with marketing.
Nice review Raychul always enjoy your thoughts and opinions in the gaming world. Like anything it always takes a bit of time to get accustomed to a new layout but I like the look of it. I personally don't own a 360 only a PS3 and would like to see something similar if the PS3 does an update to their xmb as it feels a bit dated now. Take care.

What a complete joke. Mostly ads, wow and people are proud of this.
Atleast on my superior system called PS3, we don't have all these ads. In fact we got 2, the What's new box and the one underneath the clock in the upper right corner. That is it. I bought a console for gaming not for ads. It shows Microsoft cares more about money than gaming.
I'm pretty sure you figured this out by now but Netflix wasn't in the video section because you had to install the app first. You have to install all of the apps again before you can use them.
I know you don't use it but the Kinect is great now.I don't worry about the small play game box as when u turn on I just say "xbox play game" and it plays
Actually you can tab browse with the rb and lb buttons. In video you have to go into your apps to get to netflix. I believe you are forgetting that The 360 has not been only a game console but multi-media console for quiet some time. I had been beta testing the whole thing and had no problem seeing the new stuff and ads because it means i get more out of my live subscription for it.

The thing that bothers me the most is that my (old) xbox elite cant turn it self off now. I have to plug out my power adapter in order to fully shutdown my xbox. By shutting it down (In the menu or by pressing the power button) my xbox goes into some weird standby mode. C- keeps flashing green and that's it.

I had a classic zune and still have the Zune HD. Both were and are still much better than what Apple offers. :/ I did find out you can cycle through ad pages with the RS. My main complaint about the new dashboard is that organization has gone out the window, IMO. The Games tab is the worst where you have too many unneccessary clicks to get to what you want. Also, a lot of filters for sorting game are no longer there. Where did "Full Games" go?! I just prefer the old dash, TBH.
I think the problem is many platforms are trying to turn themselves into 'as many things into one as possible' so people will get that over other things, so instead of getting like a stereo from there and a VCR from there you get an Xbox, it is a way of ensuring product survival I surmise..
Anyway, it is an American system, expecting there not to be adds is well Capitalism and adds go hand in hand, it's like bread and butter I also don't understand what the big problem is, I don't know on PS3 I have to go into playstation store to watch them, and also, my understanding is today multi-functionality is the new hotness, so it makes sense they want people to use Xbox as a stereo and VCR as well as gaming console, iPods can also play videos, PS3 can do 3D television, etc etc etc etc

The only thing I think they need is programmable hot-keys, so you can pick two items you can press a shoulder button or something to instantly access, so you could pick loaded game and NetFlix, anyway it is good you like the graphics, pleasing colours, I bet it can't be easy to make something that appeals to EVERYONE
I don't have Xbox 360 because I am a hard-core gamer dude and wanted the PS3, which looked a bit more Playboy and had better hardware, it is in terms of muscle, better than Xbox, that said I do like that NetFlix is under apps because it makes sense, more power to viewer, and considering Xbox is mostly American, I sort of expect there to be adds, sort of like Capitalism, I bet they are trying to help as many companies out as they can that way

Any interface that you OWN should be customizable; to be able to turn OFF any and ALL unwanted ads - this force feeding of ads is at the very least in poor taste - as a retailer I can longer recommend the XBOX console as a gaming platform without informing customers that is now a huge ad platform to cram as many ads down your throat whether you like it or not - simply a bad move on Microsofts part - sell your stock - their sales are going to take a hit ...
@Hatmantc True - just all this unwanted commercialism really gets on my nerves - the "your gonna watch this whether you like it or not" aggressive approach is verging on rude. The popup ads in youtube videos in addition to the side ads already present was bad - now going to a console for gaming is no longer an escape ...

I like Windows Phone, but I'm not too keen on the WP interface for Xbox Live (MS is also applying this style to Windows 8). I agree with the other complaints. But maybe it will grow on me.
Everything is being turned in social sites (youtube, its a video site, so why turn it into a social site) and xbox is kinda more about "oh we're gonna be the a huge overall entainment system"...its a gaming console. Atleast on my superior system called PS3, we don't have all these ads. In fact we got 2, the What's new box and the one underneath the clock in the upper right corner. That is it. I bought a console for gaming not for ads. It shows Microsoft cares more about money than gaming.

I'm pretty sure you figured this out by now but Netflix wasn't in the video section because you had to install the app first. You have to install all of the apps again before you can use them.

Actually you can tab browse with the rb and lb buttons. In video you have to go into your apps to get to netflix. I believe you are forgetting that The 360 has not been only a game console but multi-media console for quiet some time. I had been beta testing the whole thing and had no problem seeing the new stuff and ads because it means i get more out of my live subscription for it.

The thing that bothers me the most is that my (old) xbox elite cant turn it self off now. I have to plug out my power adapter in order to fully shutdown my xbox. By shutting it down (In the menu or by pressing the power button) my xbox goes into some weird standby mode. C- keeps flashing green and that's it.

I had a classic zune and still have the Zune HD. Both were and are still much better than what Apple offers. :/ I did find out you can cycle through ad pages with the RS. My main complaint about the new dashboard is that organization has gone out the window, IMO. The Games tab is the worst where you have too many unneccessary clicks to get to what you want. Also, a lot of filters for sorting game are no longer there. Where did "Full Games" go?! I just prefer the old dash, TBH.

I think the problem is many platforms are trying to turn themselves into 'as many things into one as possible' so people will get that over other things, so instead of getting like a stereo from there and a VCR from there you get an Xbox, it is a way of ensuring product survival I surmise..

Anyway, it is an American system, expecting there not to be adds is well Capitalism and adds go hand in hand, it's like bread and butter I also don't understand what the big problem is, I don't know on PS3 I have to go into playstation store to watch them, and also, my understanding is today multi-functionality is the new hotness, so it makes sense they want people to use Xbox as a stereo and VCR as well as gaming console, iPods can also play videos, PS3 can do 3D television, etc etc etc etc

The only thing I think they need is programmable hot-keys, so you can pick two items you can press a shoulder button or something to instantly access, so you could pick loaded game and NetFlix, anyway it is good you like the graphics, pleasing colours, I bet it can't be easy to make something that appeals to EVERYONE

I don't have Xbox 360 because I am a hard-core gamer dude and wanted the PS3, which looked a bit more Playboy and had better hardware, it is in terms of muscle, better than Xbox, that said I do like that NetFlix is under apps because it makes sense, more power to viewer, and considering Xbox is mostly American, I sort of expect there to be adds, sort of like Capitalism, I bet they are trying to help as many companies out as they can that way

Any interface that you OWN should be customizable; to be able to turn OFF any and ALL unwanted ads - this force feeding of ads is at the very least in poor taste - as a retailer I can longer recommend the XBOX console as a gaming platform without informing customers that is now a huge ad platform to cram as many ads down your throat whether you like it or not - simply a bad move on Microsofts part - sell your stock - their sales are going to take a hit ...

Everything is being turned in social sites (youtube, its a video site, so why turn it into a social site) and xbox is kinda more about "oh we're gonna be the a huge overall entainment system"...its a gaming console. Everything on the new dashboard is ads for movies and programs. finding stuff is quite annoying now.

You can set it to auto-play whatever game is in the tray from the settings menu. You can also switch tabs with the bumpers not the triggers
