  • another neo-con pushing for a war with Iran. Nice to demonize an entire group of people huh.

  • Mr. Boehner, how is Wall Steet working to fix the problem. Their whole system is crooked and corrupt. Take insider trading, it goes on all the time. Investigate !

  • If John Boehner runs for President, Former Republicans that turned independant this last election will come back. It will be a turning point for me.

  • O'Bushama (Bush's 3rd Term On STEROIDS) doesn;t treat American Conservative well he calls us "terrorists" yet stopped calling terrorists, terrorists, you think he cares about Iraninans?

  • They are not trying to "sell" ANYTHING to the public. They are trying to sneak this bill through under the radar. There is massive opposition!!!!!

  • If it were 2008, the numbers would have to add up to 19% GDP total (say 21% 2010). Total healthcare costs shouldn't change much. The extra investment over the 10year period would be similar to a restructuring charge for a firm. In reality the true cost of the status quo is much greater than that 19% GDP;you have to take into account the huge amounts of opportunity costs that individuals in the USA have to endure. Lost job mobility, because insurance is not portable is just one of these costs.

  • The Economist actually says that new financial regulation doesn't go far enough. History repeats itself, over and over, that is why we have laws, to learn from mistakes; wall street will forget and that will happen again. I don't trust the insurance companies, they have done a disservice to the US and its citizens. I say let the public plan go through and compete with the insurance companies, they need competition. Opposition Iranians are asking the US to stay away.

  • How can private for profit companies compete with a government plan that is backed by a government that is willing to finance it even at a loss? Our government can't even break even when it has the power to tax, so how will it be able to provide health care without massive loses to the taxpayer? This is guaranteed to become a single payer government provide all health care system, there can be no other outcome.

  • Private health insurance companies also can compete the same way UPS and FedEx compete with USPS. The same way private security firms compete with the police. They have to adapt and become more competitive; and they surely will. If you look at the deal the insurance companies have today, it is pretty sweet; they [health insurance companies] get the bulk of the healthy population while medicare and medicaid are stuck with the risk (older and less healthy patients).

  • onlyrey:

If USPS offered free overnight shipping, do you think FedEx would be in business very long?

  • panther, USPS does offer overnight, it is called "Express Overnight Guaranteed". However you are right, anytime anybody thinks overnight, they we think FedEx. FedEx does very ingeniously compete with the USPS; it does this by focusing on the procrastination niche. That is what American enterprise does best, adapt. Today, health insurance companies have adapted best to maximize experience and reduce cost, at the cost of citizens' healthcare.

  • onlyrey,

Of course USPS offers overnight --- I said if it were "free", do you think FedEx would be in business for very long?

  • The public plan option can not be free. What the Lewin group report says (google it) is that if the public plan option is offered at the same level of delivery as the average health insurance policy, that 180.5 million people would switch; this estimate does not take into account the fact that health insurance companies would adapt. The scenario where 180.5 million people switch also results in 36.5% administrative cost savings for physicians.

  • I truly believe health insurance companies will not perish if the public plan option is available. For example, besides having to adapt on a price level, health insurance companies can use the information they have (risk of patient falling ill) to selectively offer better deals to public plan customers who they think are low risk. Health insurance companies can also offer extended health care that covers what the basic plan doesn't cover (the same they do with medicare)

  • All one has to see is how badly Gov't runs Medicare and Veterans Administration Health Care to RUN QUICKLY AWAY FROM ANY GOV"T HEALTH CARE.

Let the Market work. Get rid of Lawsuits, allow Pharmacies to have walk in clinics to cheaply and efficiently take care of most minor stuff Maybe set up a private health ins for this and than have another policy for Major Medical issues. This would be flexible and solve the health care issue.
