assignments. Of course this works for run block theory but pass theory we found to be a bit simpler. Slide or Zone. Slide was used to the heavy side and the back or backs chip anything off the edge or clean-up. Inside out philosophy for backs, take the most immediate threat (center to ourside) incase of spillage. Doesn't matter who you got in the backfield, if the men in the trenches don't win, you don't win.
Therefore, we use simple word tags such as OIL...Man On, Man Inside, Linebacker or just simple veer philosophy, 1. gap 2. down 3. backer. In the spread at another school no matter the ball carrier if we pulled someone we added Letters ex. 35 TAG which is basically everyone blocks down and the tackle gaurd combo from the backside pull, first kicks out, second cleans up and cuts up. I know it sounds elementary but its amazing when you simplfy these rules how much more successful and less blown
any offense to attack, confuse the blocking assignments, as well as what I found to be highly successful narrow down the bread and butter players and plays, and do not allow them to use the players or plays they are most successful on beat you. As a D coord that was key and having kids know Alignment and assignment were the most effective. Knowing this we developed rules to help simplfy and keep our overall philosophy of (K.I.S.S) Keep it simple. What we saw often was the unexpected of course.
Just randomly surfed across this video, I thing this is good basic techniques, in my experience as a head varsity coach it was early on always a challenge for kids on the o-line to get the correct block. Of course lots of styles of offense require differnt philosophies (Single-Wing to Spread to Veer) but we were most successful when we always tied in to our plays clues and simple rules for facing what your gonna see on most varsity nights which is of course the best way to defeat (mo2nd comment)
